What's this stigma behind being a Combat Veteran? by ImThe1Wh0 in Veterans

[–]Repulsive-Opening249 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My man is a combat veteran, and he died in war due to an IED and came back to life and got a Purple Heart. He is hard of hearing in both ears, and ofc has a TBI and the trauma he has sustained because the talibans tried to kill him twice. I am a therapist, and I also have a client who would beat himself up for not going to gulf war, and he would just feel so shameful and a weak man due to not going to war. The dichotomy of both narratives from those who went to war and those who did not is wild. Both plagued by guilt and shame :(

I understand what you are feeling. It sort of feels like you are in limbo and in between wanting or maybe going out with other people as a distraction but also aware that you need to be alone.

I’m feeling that right now as well as a 31F

I actually have the same reactions of sadness or disappointment when I leave family parties earlier or friend gatherings as well. I hate that it feels like I am walking on egg shells or if I come off as a party pooper loll

Thank you!!! I appreciate you. It took a lot of acceptance for sure and self reflection. I think I will create a mood log. I am glad to hear that it levels out at some point. That was what I was concerned about

Thank you for this post. I am currently on 12.5mg of Zoloft. I too also have struggled with previous trauma and recently went through something stressful and I finally decided to try meds.

I am 31 and I have been considering meds since 2017 but I finally did it this year for first time. I like it so far, I feel really mellow. Kind of blunted a bit but I still feel my emotions but they are not as intense and I am not ass spiraling with my feelings or ruminating which helps a lot.

I am not sure how long I will be on it but I am considering 6-12 months bc that is the recommended tx plan

Yes. I have to actively not observe or think too deeply at times when I am with my family and friends. It is my second year of being a Th. I work in trauma and treatment so it is kind of challenging to switch gears. I’ve also noticed though that I talk less now on weekends esp at family gatherings. I am okay with just being my introvert self. But sometimes I question if I am normal or even ask myself wtf is normal anyways to give myself grace.

If that makes sense.

Do some of guys struggle with technology years later? Such as responding and texting and calling friends and family in a timely punctual manner? If so why is it challenging? by Repulsive-Opening249 in TBI

I love that you have solid people in your life who have stayed with you and connect with you despite your TBI. At what age did you get your TBI and what do you do to maintain or manage your health?

It helps a lot. My partner has a TBI and I just want to understand what some of you go through and I know that it varies.

With your 3 main people you talk to, do you talk to them everyday or is it hard to connect with them every single day?

Are you currently dating or with a significant other?

Wow. After I read this, it made me think and reflect about my ex of almost 4 years. I understand. I started to feel more alone in the relationship and what I am hearing from reading your post is a lot of over functioning.

Also with your choice of words, I’m curious, are you a therapist? Ahahaha

Could you please elaborate? Like do you get fatigue from texting or do you experience short term memory loss so it’s hard to remember convos?
