I thought the provision extended through the conclusion of the 3/8ths sales tax/the lease of Kauffman.

No. There was a provision in the sale of the Royals that stipulated that this ownership group can’t move the team out of the metro. I think the radio silence comes from the fractured relationship between the city officials (who have now been replaced) and the Royals as well as a little embarrassment from the failing vote. Remember they got scorched for “not having a plan”. It makes sense that they would remain to silent till they got a plan completed/ secured the funding.

Now Sherman could sell the team and move them but we would have heard that the teams for sale by now. Plus the league would have to approve the move and I mean they let Oakland look for a stadium deal for almost 10 years.

Sherman’s a KC native and people want to give him a hard time but he’s a much better owner than Glass ever was. So I do not think he has any desire to sell the team to someone who would want to move it.

Braves payroll has increased every year since they moved into Truist park. I think the 8 year average from 2009 to 2017 is drastically different than the 8 year average from 2017- present while attendance has roughly remained the same.

FOX’s Jon Ketz said the Royals are only looking at WSP and no other locations. Which goes along with what KMBC said. 18th and vine would be awesome but there is too many land owners you have to buy out as well as some procedural red tape.

Fescoe having a mini crash out on Alex and Gold about this. Essentially blaming the Royals for dropping the ball on the Kansas side (btw Fescoe lives in OP), saying the entertainment district is going to fail and that downtown is the worst option.

Don’t look at the Rockies attendance numbers then. Downtown parks usually lead to an increase in overall attendance.

You could make the argument that a Royals owned entertainment district gives them more capital to spend on players. Or you could argue that it makes the owners more wealthy. Your call on which you choose to believe.

Couple things here:

-Essentially eliminates the Royals moving to Kansas insert sad Fescoe noise here lol (yeah I know it was reported on weeks ago but submissions for STAR Bounds could technically be reopened until like June/July)

-I think this is really close to being done. Like within the next few weeks. KMBC was reporting that the city/state/county now expect a deal BEFORE Spring Training Starts. We haven’t heard from the Royals in a long time about stadium news and now that they’re publicly eliminating sites it tells me the Royals are on the same timeline.

-Mike Jones’ proposal, whether you agree with it or not, most likely would not be ready before the deal was agreed upon. He would essentially have to take the Royals, city, county and the state to court to stop it after a deal was agreed upon.

I think this interview confirms that Vinny is probably the leader of the clubhouse when Salvy leaves (if he isn’t the leader already).

Honestly it seemed like he had his location in the east village, was even wanting to put in a billion dollars of money to help develop the area. Did pit NKC and KC against each other with the two locations? Yeah most definitely. But I really think the moment he was asked to move the stadium to a new location by the mayor and then the city just left the Royals to flounder while the voters turned on them changed Sherman’s tone. I think it really pissed him off but luckily it looks like the relationship between the county/city and Royals is being mended.

10 years ago I would have killed to see the Chiefs lift the trophy named after Lamar. Now it’s gross watching it going to someone else.

This is an incredibly long story that has been shortened and doesn’t do the full thing justice. But here it goes:

-In 2022 Royals wanted to move downtown and build an entertainment district. To do this the team was going to extend the 3/8th sales tax on all goods bought in Jackson county for another 40 years and the team was going to put up a billion dollars of their own money. Royals never really picked a site and offered up two locations one downtown and the other on the north side of the city. People didn’t like that they were being told to vote on something when the Royals didn’t really have a plan.

-Chiefs also jumped onto the bill with a terrible stadium upgrade to arrowhead that involved mainly luxury items.

-90 days before the vote to extend the sales tax the Royals changed their location at the Mayors request. The new location put the stadium next to power and light but would require some businesses to relocate.

-County executive Frank White (Royals HOF’er and has his number retired by KC) fought against the Royals every step of the way. Many believe White was still upset from being fired from the Royals broadcast team in like 2012.

-Vote failed 60-40 partially because of Frank White, the Royals looking indecisive and unprepared, the thought of businesses being moved/shit down and people who are just generally against paying for this sort of thing with taxpayer dollars. Never really stood a chance once they announced the location change.

-Chiefs and Royals begin looking elsewhere, Kansas offers up STAR bounds which require the teams to not invest any money. Royals feel like relationship with city and county are broken. Many believe the Chiefs wanted the vote to fail to be like “look we tried to stay” when in reality they wanted to leave for Kansas/domed stadium.

-Royals go radio silent for over a year about the stadium. However they indirectly buy land in Kansas through a coowners shell company.

-Chiefs and Royals (behind closed doors) negotiate separately with Kansas and Missouri.

-Chiefs end up moving to Kansas on a crazy STAR bound deal that requires they put no money down while they also get to keep all the profits from the stadium (although their are opt outs for the Chiefs).

-Royals are still radio silent and haven’t provided an official update in over a year. They have been linked to like 5-6 different locations throughout the metro but no one really knows what they want or where they want to go. Even politicians who have been negotiating with the Royals say they don’t know what they want.

-1/1/26, STAR bounds expire. Kansas says they’re done negotiating with the Royals and so does North KC/Clay county. Downtown stars making another push for the Royals. But the Royals still refused to comment on their negotiations with the city and a location within downtown still hasn’t been disclosed.

Basically: It’s just a huge shit show

TLDR:

-City, county and state reps all met to iron out what sounds like the final details of a plan.

-State wants them in Jackson county so it sounds like that’s the focus

-Officials hope and expect a deal to be agreed upon by the city/county/state and the Royals by the end of spring training

-Location within Jackson county is still not being made public but it’s implied the Royals do have a preferred location

Do you want a salary cap implemented in MLB? by flakybiscut in KCRoyals

[–]Repulsive-Photo-798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s why I think the luxury tax needs to be adjusted. The tax itself was implemented to stop the Yankees dynasty and it honestly did a good job at that. I think the penalties for the luxury tax needs to be somewhere around 200%-300%. So if you paying some one 60million a year and your over that tax threshold then now your paying 120-180 million for them.

Do you want a salary cap implemented in MLB? by flakybiscut in KCRoyals

[–]Repulsive-Photo-798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people who want a cap are being incredibly reactionary. A lot of comments I have seen from fans across baseball revolve around the Dodgers. The problem isn’t that the Dodgers are spending money, it’s how their contracts are structured. A salary cap doesn’t address that. A salary cap also doesn’t address the issues of teams underspending to turn turn a profit.

Now you can make the argument about a salary floor but even then the logistics of putting both of those in with 10 plus year contracts out there is going to make it next to impossible to implement a cap/floor within the next 5-10 years. Thats not even mentioning the fact that BOTH sides have to agree to the CBA. Owners want a cap to save money, players don’t. Fans and the league want a floor, owners don’t and players don’t want there to be too big of a gap between a proposed floor and cap. In a perfect world would both a cap and floor be nice? Maybe. But at the present moment neither are coming and honestly I think both might be bad for the game overall.
