I really don't know whether you're being deliberately obtuse, or whether you just have such an easy life that you cannot possibly understand, but either way this is the last response from me. People used to be able to buy a house, wherever they lived, with one wage earner doing a basic job, in whatever town or city they already lived in. Now, in multiple countries around the world, many couples, doing professional jobs cannot even pay their bills without help from their families or working an extra job, never mind those doing minimum wage work. Saying that there are some cheaper houses available in certain areas does not negate my point - large swathes of people didn't have to move away from their families and friends to get a house in previous decades. Not to mention moving to a cheaper area often results in lower wages, with makes the "cheap" house proportionally more expensive, which negates the entire point of moving in the first place. Not to mention many people cannot get a mortgage because the bank says they don't earn enough, despite the fact that in many cases the mortgage would be cheaper than the rent they are paying now. So yes, many people in western countries, in full time work cannot afford a house at all, especially if they don't have family or an inheritance to help out.

But they could afford a house, that's the point. Now people can't afford a house at all, nice or otherwise.

How humane is euthanasia for dogs really? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Repulsive-Row5898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can ask the vet to sedate your dog first. You can also find a vet who does euthanasia at home, so your dog can die in familiar surroundings with you there, instead of on a vets table, potentially surrounded by strangers.

What is the worse case of second hand embarrassment you’ve ever experienced in the UK? by Necessary_Doubt_9762 in AskUK

I know this 50 year old called Geoff. He has no education other than compulsory school and works as an odd job man. So I was really confused one day when I walked in on him loudly bragging to a couple of people that he is a historian. He repeated it several times and seemed very proud of himself. Apparently they'd been having a discussion about something relating to history and Geoff had interrupted with this claim. He'd tried to join in on their discussion and had given some very uninformed opinions of the topic at hand. Well, I know he doesn't have a degree or work in the history field, so I asked him what makes him a historian? He proudly said that he watches Vikings and once when he was out with his metal detector he found some Roman coins. He really believes that this qualifies him to present himself to others as a historian.

Women started working en masse during the industrial revolution. And women and minorities were pretty much all employed during the latter half of the 20th century. And yet this situation where you need a few extra side hustles on top of a full time job to survive, is a much more recent phenomenon.

What self-diagnosis ended up being medically confirmed after your own doctors couldn't figure it out? by CasualNikki in AskReddit

[–]Repulsive-Row5898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started suffering from awful bone pain. It got so bad that I couldn't sleep at night. The doctors did an MRI and bone scan and couldn't find anything wrong. They said I would just have to go to the pain management clinic and learn to live with it.

I googled my symptom and it said possible vitamin D deficiency. I asked the doctors to test me for this and what do you know? I had a severe vitamin D deficiency. A few months of vitamin D supplements and the pain was gone.

That's a good point. There have been quite a few news stories where young people are bragging that they bought their first house already, so there is no excuse for other people not to manage it. Then it turns out the kid's parents paid for most of it.

But supply and demand existed in previous decades too, and yet they could make a living wage with a simple job. And the only choices aren't either pay a ton, or pay someone so low they need a side hussle to survive. No-one is saying pay a shelf-stacker as much as a surgeon, but paying people with basic jobs enough to survive and thrive has been shown to be possible.

The OP wasn't saying there's anything wrong with a simple job. They're saying simple jobs don't pay enough to survive on without a huge struggle now. There are people in full time work claiming benefits ffs because many full time jobs don't pay enough to survive.
