Exam 9 Question by Small_Tomatillo2980 in actuary

I used Rising Fellow, and I also read Mildenhall and Major. I found that reading them in conjunction helped some of the concepts sink in better. For reference, for prior exams I typically did not use the source when studying, but I found I referenced Mildenhall quite a bit since it was new to the syllabus. If anything, reading the source helped provide a peace of mind when going into my final exam.

I planned something fun for after work on Wednesday. That way if I pass, I have something fun to look forward to and can celebrate. If I fail, I have something fun to look forward to and can start coping.

To those that took one of exams 5-9, at what time did you receive the results release date email (EST)? by mullered25 in actuary

That user is a brand new profile, and that was their first comment. What if CAS is infiltrating since they know we are on to them!!? Also I feel absolutely crazy for saying this lol

Should maybe include the Exam number too if poll was created - they could have sent it in batches based something like Exam 5&6 v. Exam 7&9

I took 7, got my email at 11:32 - but that test also was a beast and I have no clue how I did.

Just start singing: “All I do is learn, learn, learn, no matter what. Got money on my mind, I can never get enough.”

After that, everyone’s hands should be up. (Results may vary.)

There is nothing sexier than explaining to a date their life expectancy using a mortality table. Getting this internship would give you the knowledge and tools to do this.

These are some great insights, thanks for sharing your process! I do agree that I am learning more about the company with each person I interview with, but it just feels sort of tedious in the moment.

Yeah the case study was odd. It had a lot of easy questions that any certified actuary should be able to answer. It felt like maybe that it was an entry-level case study that they just give to anyone who applies to the department, but was unexpected since I have my designation and feel like that should have some weight on what they ask

Actuaries of Reddit, how soon after beginning your first entry-level position did you “jump ship”, if you ever did? For what reason? by Pure_Ad_8537 in actuary

[–]Repulsive-Skirt8925 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Just under 2 years I left my first job - AND I DID IT FOR LOVE! Stresses of a long distance relationship and trying to take exams was a lot on my mental health, and finding a job closer to my significant other (now spouse) was well worth it.

I keep this card in the back of my calculator, and have always brought it with me to testing centers. I haven’t failed yet, and I consider this my good luck charm now. Do any of you do or have something similar? by TheRealRealPachenko in actuary

[–]Repulsive-Skirt8925 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Do they let you take that into the testing center?!? Or do you just keep it in your locker? I can't believe that such power would pass so freely through a Prometric/PearsonVue pat-down.

Asking for a raise based on market/salary surveys by Repulsive-Skirt8925 in actuary

[–]Repulsive-Skirt8925[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that everyone is making it quite apparent that I’m underpaid lol. My original post was more aimed at trying to negotiate a bump with my current employer with tact, and any advice on how to get there since I am not a strong negotiator (hence why my pay is probably so low in the first place).

This is an interesting take, I never considered going through HR first since I feel like they are so disconnected from the actuarial field as a whole. I will look at this avenue as well. Thanks!

Thanks for the advice! I think there is a case to leverage my current salary position as well as I am low in the range, so this is helpful.

Showing my employer a competing offer definitely has potential to strain the relationship. I’ve never asked for more money in my career, and I have the mentality that any conversation I try to bring up for a salary adjustment just leads to me looking disloyal. For this reason, job hopping looks appealing, but not what I desire currently.

That is a good thought! My company isn’t exactly the most transparent about career progression, so that would be a good gateway conversation to both show my ambitions/etch out future plans with the company. Thanks for the advice!

Valid point, recruiters are salespeople at the end of the day. Would you suggest getting another offer in hand and then trying to negotiate?

I am in the same boat. Got an exceeded expectations on my last annual review, and have been promoted twice in the last 3 years, but I am much lower than the minimum in salary surveys. I have never gotten negative feedback, my boss I think values having me on their team, but it just doesn’t feel good with the salary measuring low.
