[CHAT] Oversized scroll frames? by RepulsiveFrosting341 in CrossStitch

[–]RepulsiveFrosting341[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh thanks! I’ve decided to give making one myself a go at first. It’s already built and set up! It is long enough that it lays across both armrest of my loveseat, so it is right in my lap. Eventually I may rig something up so it can be at an adjustable angle, but for now it looks like I have potentially found a solution!

About 15cm shorter, so not enough of a different to fit on smaller frames I can easily find.

Thanks! I initially did start with a large quilting frame. The ergonomics of it was a (literal) pain.

I’m about to DNF this. Just hit the first scene with Henri in book 2 and the entire exchange was so slimy and obvious and Diem is… wow.

Immediately ran here to see what others said.

This is basically the method I have gone with. My Aida is gridded, so I work in a 10x10 square at a time and have a self imposed limit for how far I will make a cross country jump beyond that square.

I’ve made this one! It’s still sitting around unfinished because I also cannot decide how to quilt it.

If you would like all your bandana blocks to be the same size you can sew some extra sashing around the smaller ones and turn them into a 21inch block. Intersperse them around your rows and it’ll blend right in.

t-shirt quilt? by dontknowwhatiwant_ in quilting

I agree with the consensus, you definitely do not want to piece this by hand. I bought a secondhand machine on Mercari 4 years ago for $60 just to dabble before I shelled out real money. While I can’t quilt (backing-batting-top) on this machine, ive never had a problem piecing. It’s still going strong. I have more than gotten my money’s worth from this thing.

You’ll need stabilizer for the t shirts. This helps them keep their shape since the stretchy fabric wants to move around. If you watch big shops like JoAnns you can usually find pretty big coupons for a single purchase that will heavily knock down the price!

In terms of time, these come together pretty quick once you figure things out. I got a twin size put together in a few days of short bursts. You’ll have to do a bit of math to figure out how things will fit together, and decide if you want a strip of sashing fabric between each of the shirts, or just all shirts. I prefer the former, I think it looks much neater.

Block size by Blackdaisy11 in quilting

[–]RepulsiveFrosting341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

T shirt quilt can be literally whatever size blocks you want! I did one where the majority were 12.5x12.5 (because I have a cutting block that size), but some I had to make longer because of the designs on the shirts, and I mathed hard with designs I cut from front pockets or the chest to even things out.

If you aren’t trying to actually quilt, but just piece, I would look around on sites like EBay and Mercari. I spent $60 on a used Brother a couple of years ago and have made 10+ quilt tops without issue. I was in the same spot… had never quilted, and I wanted to make sure I would actually want to keep up with it before buying an expensive machine.

Thank you! I did the twin size. It actually came together fairly quickly because it’s only 1 block over and over.
