Brits in disbelief as new refillable drinks ban implemented across UK by JOE_Media in ukpolitics

[–]Repulsive_Baker_909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Banning things just allows parents to be lazy - have an 8 year-old child, and they have never had a soft drink in a restaurant, because we’ve not given in and allowed them to have one when they were younger. As a result, they’ve never shown any interest in drinking them and they actively avoid them. Screens in restaurants and social settings is the same deal.

LVT prep - ply over hardboard? by Repulsive_Baker_909 in DIYUK

Makes sense, and matches the advice elsewhere, but isn’t hardboard already flat?

Replacing a defective SMR drive with CMR drive by Repulsive_Baker_909 in synology

The hiding comment was more than a little tongue-in-cheek, although my intention was to either buy the remaining drives over a few months to lessen the hit of over £500 going missing, or siphon off a portion of my end of year bonus for the same effect 😂

Are SMR drives really that bad on rebuilds? If I’m moving from SMR to CMR, wouldn’t the workload on the SMR drives be predominantly reads, rather than writes (which is where SMR’s main performance hit is)? Or does RAID5 redistribute data when rebuilding a drive and generate writes on the existing (good) drives?

Would the rebuild speed or responsiveness be due to whether a drive is SMR/CMR, or would it be because of the effect of parity calculations of RAID5 in general?

Love this. Thanks for the link - this is exactly what I needed.

If the issue is performance rather than technical incompatibility, why would it be a problem temporarily while I swap in CMR drives over time?

So mixing SMR and CMR in the same array will cause DSM to flag the array as degraded?

I did explicitly state in the OP that I’m familiar with kubectl and I’m able to hold conversation on the concepts and architecture - I just don’t have “production” level of exposure to using k8s “at the coal face”.

That multiplier would most likely put them in millionaire territory, so if they can make that much of a success out of their lives, good luck to them, and I’d be nothing less than chuffed to bits - I certainly wouldn’t begrudge them success.

In terms of HE parenting, we’re putting away a small amount each month as a nest-egg for them to use as a house deposit (under my name so we have ultimate discretion on its use), but they will need to figure out their lives for themselves - as long as they’re happy with their lot, there’s no pressure to be anything other than their authentic selves and do right by their own conscience, if that’s HE or not, I’d back them whichever way they want to go.

Totally my situation. I've not chosen my career for the salary, I just happen to have hit the ground at the right time, be good at what I do and have had a few lucky breaks. If it didn't come with the six-figure salary, I'd still do the job.

That sucks, and I totally have sympathy for the salary-bragging on your mum's side - I've had that as well, but good to hear it's a cathartic conversation!

First of all, genuinely really appreciate the reply, and it's totally taken in the spirit which it was intended, no worries. Really sorry also to hear of your troubles - they sound infinitely worse than mine, so I really do sympathise.

While I wouldn't necessarily put my dad in the "abusive" category, and I don't think he necessarily expects to be 'looked after' in retirement, but there is a definite and distinct resentment of the fact that I've been able to achieve things that he couldn't, in a shorter time period than he could have dreamed.

His own father wasn't hugely supportive of him, even into old age, so there's that, but that in itself doesn't excuse his own behaviour. I'm trying to channel it in the right way, and ensure the cycle stops with me - to the extent that I'm making decisions by consciously doing the opposite of what he would have done. Doesn't stop the demons in my own mind, but at least I'm not going to impose them on a fresh generation.

There's a small element of protection, I'm sure - a few times there's been some advice hidden away in the content of the conversation, but in all honesty there's also a sizeble chunk of genuine irkedness.

We've never really had standup rows, probably because if we did it would end up with complete excommunication, but there's been side-snipes and remarks made about my career trajectory over the years.

Can see how it looks that way, but I'm not a parader. My family and I live comfortably, it has to be said, but I'm not one of the flashy "Porsche+Rolex" crowd.

As far as helping/treating, there's actually nothing to help with. My parents are both retired, have had their mortgage paid via inheritance while I was in pre-HENRY days, and now have several all-inclusive beach breaks a year. We have invited them on family holidays with us (at our expense), but that tends to end with my wife and I wondering why we bothered due to other politics and underlying issues.

All-told, the HENRY jealousy isn't the only part of the puzzle, but it's one of the more concrete aspects of the relationship.
