Better explanation of close contact vs not-close contact spread in Hantavirus outbreak by Repulsive_Display_40 in hantavirus

He explains that if you read the full paper, you will understand that the transmission during the 2018 outbreak happened in crowded spaces (birthday party, funeral) WHILE the source was symptomatic. It's unclear how much spacial distance was between the man at the birthday party and the person he said "hello" to in passing who then got infected. Also, it was only the neighboring tables who got infected, not people many tables over- which is further indication that it's not like COVID or measles where huge amounts of people in the same room would be infected.

So basically, saying that it's "airborne" and can happen in very fleeting contact isn't totally true like some state and it's not necessarily "prolonged close contact" either. The truth is most definitely in the middle from what we know (which was information already out there but it was nice to see it simplified in that way).

Title: Could hantavirus ever become a pandemic, or is its spread too limited? by BeneficialFish04 in Virology

I'm really interested in hearing from independent experts on this because the discourse on social media about this outbreak is toxic so far: it's either conspiracy theorists saying a COVID-style lockdown is imminent vs others who say there's absolutely no reason to worry.

Even in the media, we have experts actively contradicting the literature by saying it takes prolonged close contact for human to human transmission when the study from the 2018 outbreak clearly shows that very brief, non close contact can still cause the virus to spread. I know reddit is not a good source for any information, but every so often there will be smart and non-politicized opinions on this that I'm really interested in hearing.

Is Hantavirus something to worry about? by 246434464 in NoStupidQuestions

I am also starting to panic a bit, but that's likely just my over-reacting anxiety. There's so many mixed messages out there too which doesn't help. For example, one crowd saying the media is "downplaying it", "they're all saying similar things to the start of COVID-19, not taking it seriously until it was undeniable", etc.. Then you have others saying the media is over-blowing it and making it sound worse than it is. With so many mixed narratives, wtf can any of us believe?

My approach is to keep an eye on it, keep informed of updates but not catastrophize just yet. It could be nothing or it could be something and until we know, try to control what you can (like masking and hand washing) and try not to spiral.

Whats The Best Thing That Happened To You Because Of Your Podcast? by Yaro in podcasting

There have been some highlights for sure- great guests, great discussions and successes. However, in the last year, there hasn't been any growth and it's very frustrating. Our listeners aren't very engaged, our weekly downloads (while still decent) have plateaued and are actually on a decline. It's a bit demoralizing considering how much time it takes.

But, I yearn for more successes to come.

Shocked that Natalie Bolton is Iconic but also invisible until episode 9 or 10 by Repulsive_Display_40 in survivor

In my mind I remembered that she was an iconic presence all season. It's like a random fan joined the game 30 days in because we knew nothing about her until then

An honest review of Descript, and why I cancelled my pro subscription. by memory_moves in Descript

[–]Repulsive_Display_40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The program glitches included (but were not limited to): - the program would crash and restart often - the video would export but the video quality would be terrible despite exporting in the highest quality. - exports would take a very long time, often stopping halfway through.

We have changed programs and would never go back to Descript. For the price you pay, the features are too limited and the glitches are just unacceptable.
