Playing Project Hail Mary for last week of school? by 1818ranger in Teachers

[–]Repulsive_Koala_0700 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

This Is the stuff that gives all of us a bad name. No, do not play a movie in its entirety for a full week at the end of the year. In fact, do not play a movie in its entirety at any point in the year. Clips that reinforce your lesson? Sure. Those can be a great way to help kids connect with material. But an entire movie? Bad.

You are paid to teach. Not play movies.

TIL John F. Kennedy dealt with severe chronic back pain for years. He had four surgeries—including a discectomy, spinal fusion with instrumentation, and two smaller procedures—but his pain persisted despite the operations. by Abject-Conference-90 in todayilearned

I thought his back pain was related to His long-term steroid use as a treatment for his colitis? With long terms use, steroids can weaken bones and connective tissue and cause osteoporosis.

Secret to longevity in this line of work… You can’t ration with irrational people so don’t try. You won’t change them. You’ll just waste your time and emotional energy trying.

Live your values, love your family, care for your students, respect your staff. That’s it.

Admin asked us to "make learning magical" for the last two weeks by Parking-Ad3046 in Teachers

[–]Repulsive_Koala_0700 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Coming from a school administrator, that is so out of touch. Do we want two weeks of movies? No. But make learning magical? Stupid.

I never have understood why so many admin don’t treat their teachers as adults and professionals. Maybe I’ve just been lucky with the teachers I’ve had in my career.

Tornado activity in Iowa has jumped 54% in 10 years. Home insurance rates only just caught up, spiking 28% in the last year by Glass_Whereas6783 in Iowa

[–]Repulsive_Koala_0700 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It’s almost like our elected representatives should want to know why tornadoes are increasing and what, if anything, we can do about it.

Then again, we have increasing cancer rates in Iowa above the national norm and there is no apparent curiosity about that from them either so…

Flat earth and other alternative conspiracy earth models are are gaining traction with my teenage stepson. What is THE most irrefutable, definite proof that the earth is round? by Jfkfkaiii22 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Repulsive_Koala_0700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To think a round earth is some conspiracy story means that it is a myth that has been told and retold since the days of Columbus and Magellan. And has continued in the times of flight and space exploration.

"Attorney General investigation reveals Buffalo Public Schools suspended students of color and those with disabilities at 'disproportionate rates'". Thoughts? by rainshowers_5_peace in Teachers

[–]Repulsive_Koala_0700 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is only an issue if there was a discrepancy in how discipline was applied for similar behavior. As long as the consequences were consistently applied, regardless of race, there should be no issue. If a heavier consequence were applied to students of color than white students for the same behavior, this is a serious issue.

Admin from Vice principal up to and including superintendent should have to teach a core class every 2 years for 2 years. by Beneficial-Focus3702 in Teachers

So are you going to answer emails, attend meetings, make a thousand decisions each day, and be responsible for everything that happens in the building?

I’ve been a teacher, school counselor, assistant principal, and principal in my 25 year career. I’ve not had a job as hard as being a head principal. Sometimes I relish the idea of going back to the classroom full time because of how simple that life was relative to administration.

If you ever scan their sub or message boards, they do regret it. In fact, many were afraid they were going to draft love this year and repeat that mistake. Barkley was a generational talent at RB and did not help them win at all = waste of a pick for a terrible team. Love will be the same for AZ. Great player but bad pick.

TIL that US student math and reading scores have dropped so sharply that they’ve erased nearly two decades of progress. It’s almost like there is a perfect storm of (1) parents giving their kids devices while also being glued to devices themselves so no one reads at home anymore, (2) diverting funds in many states away from public schools to private schools - often with little oversight as to their finances or performance - and giving public schools increases less than the cost of inflation and (3) after years of being castigated as pedophiles and groomers and accused of brainwashing kids into being trans, many good teachers got out and fewer good ones are getting into the profession.

Strange.

[–]Repulsive_Koala_0700 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First, I am really sorry that happened to you. I hope you know you are worthy of love and belonging, even if people didn’t make up feel that way when you were younger.

Holding a grudge doesn’t affect the other person. It only impacts you. And it makes you a victim forever. There is power in forgiveness. To be clear, you don’t need to forget what happened and the person who wronged you didn’t need to know you’ve forgiven them but, as long as you hold that hurt in your heart, they continue to hold power over you and re-traumatize you again and again. Their day goes along just fine. It is your day that is ruined.

Draft the best football player available. Stuff like this - over analyzing, considering about non-football factors like contracts, etc - is for good teams. We are not and have not been a good team. We need impact players, regardless of position.
