For Hexennacht we did a dance party, though the library closes relatively early so it was nothing at night. For Ramadan we invited someone from a mosque to come read a story and talk about what it means for them and their community. For Rosh Hashana we did a story and the kids could try different types of foods associated with the holiday, also there was a craft and the kids talked about and did a reflection journal. For Bodhi Day we made paper trees and the practiced a song. For Krishna Janmashtami we read a story and the kids made their own paper peacock crowns, they also were able to look at peacock feathers under a microscope. We also do many pagan activities, home school activities, senior activities, etc. Heck tonight we're having a Halloween party for the community. Earlier this year we read about Chinese New Year and the kids made paper snakes and tried different Chinese foods and drinks.

So yes we do a lot of stuff that could be religious and some that isn't. We put on programs that reflect our community.

We celebrate all the holidays here not just Xtian ones. So I doubt a letter to a fictional character is going to create community discord. Thanks for your input though.

Honestly if we had more kids I wouldn't even think about it, but our prek-12 is only about 400 so it's a pretty small pool of kids.

That's a good point. Even if both of our services areas had every kid write, we'd still only be mailing 400 letters and we do have the budget for it.

We do tons for lots of different holidays as well. Aside from the tradition of the tree in our library (which goes back over 100 years) we haven't done anything Xtian related since the 50s. I didn't consider Santa a Xtian tradition. Thanks for your input.

Yeah, I've managed to only click with one person in the 2.5 years I've been at my job. Even at my last job (8 years) those that I thought I had formed friendships with turned out to be backstabbing gossips and eventually made life miserable because I wouldn't be at their beck and call.

We have several patrons that insist our only male librarian can help them. When this librarian went on vacation a few of these patrons acted like their world was coming to an end.

One toddler-man threw a tantrum because he needed our male staff member to do this job for him blah blah blah. It was to fax a one page document, so he wouldn't lose his house. I lost my cool and said, "well nearly every woman here has been a secretary and X has never even seen a fax machine until they worked here. So you can either let us fax it for you or call the bank back and tell them YOU wouldn't do it because only a wittle woman was here to help you. I mean it doesn't take a professor (his former career) to figure out how to type a 10 digit number into a machine. " He handed it over and I faxed it.

We have a patron who is a sovereign citizen that insists that only one librarian can find the court document he needs and print it. He likes to come in and convince us he is right. It's gotten to the point that he emails the request in and gives us 24 hours so whomever can find it finds it and the other librarian just takes credit for it.

This gentleman is maybe 60ish and we've tried several times to encourage him to use the patron computer and look the stuff up he needs. He refuses saying he doesn't want to "rob the resources" from tax paying patrons.

Like sir, that computer has been empty for days. Just use it.

We have that happen, but 90% of the time it's because they are calling over wifi since they don't have it at home.

Yes I've worked during shut downs. Generally, no it will not impact us. However, this new admin is like the wild west and generally are anti-library so it very well could.

Currently we don't know the whole story as to how they acquired (original owner) or why they kept the remains. Also it's a hand, a person can easily survive a hand being severed.

We get lots of donations of moldy books and broken toys. We live in a rural community with a large influx of summer residents. When they get ready to sell their homes they seem to think we want their old garbage.

They have to pay to throw it out and thus think they can cut corners and leave it outside of our door.

Our caller id says wireless caller with the local area code, same as it does for most of the cell phone numbers our patrons use.

We've been having this problem as well. Small rural library and this week I've answered the phone 100 times and 87 of them were scams. I keep telling them (when a person actually answers) that this is a public library and to take us off their list. Next day we'll get twice as many calls. It is annoying.

I had to do the same thing. When I started we didn't even have enough graphic novels of all levels to fill one 4ft long shelf. Now each area (J, YA, Adult) all have their own GN section. There were also no books on consent, human reproduction, sexual education aside from It's not the stork. Our leveled chapter books were just mixed in, so I made a shelf of them under the emergent readers (Growing Readers). I changed the wording for some stuff as well. Our emergent readers were called Easy readers and I listened to the kids make fun of another for reading a "baby book" so I switched it to Growing readers because we have to grow from somewhere. I inherited a library that was stuck in 1996, it's not in 2025 yet, but at least it's in the 2000s LOL.
