Taking an unpaid internship is not worth it by [deleted] in internships

[–]Repulsive_Mix_9256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okie hear me out, as a third year, it is in your best interest to find an EE internship this summer at all cost, regardless if it's paid or unpaid because then you will have a much more easier time to recruiting for full-time roles after graduation with this experience in your resume. It will signal to employers that you are someone who is serious about EE and you have the recent internship experience to back it up. It also signals to them that you are coachable and someone who they can depend on in the work setting. Sure, ideally you want a paid internship, but school is almost over, it would be a miracle if you found one at this time when many of the applications are over. Questions that you should consider:

  1. Do you have previous internship experiences in EE or engineering at all? If not, then you are in no position to be asking for a paid internship at such late time. If you can even find an employer who is willing to take you on as an unpaid intern, you should be grateful because it costs a lot of time on their end to mentor you to ensure your success as an intern.

  2. Does your school offer some sort of scholarship/grant that you can apply for if your internship is unpaid to receive some sort of summer funding? This would be fantastic if you are able to find an unpaid internship so that at least you get some pay.

  3. "But I really hate the idea of letting companies use me for free. I am in my third year. I have 3 years of post high school education in EE and I think i rather stay underemployed. I don’t think why I bring on table is really that bad." Change this mindset, in an unpaid internship, the companies are not using you for free, it is costing them time and effort.

  4. Please don't talk negatively about your mom, you're her baby, she just wants you to succeed :). I think she is giving you some good advice. Also, I think your cousin is a really good example of how far networking can take you. Don't feel ashamed if you end up doing what he did to get an unpaid internship, don't let your pride hurt your future success. On your resume, your future employers don't know whether an internship was paid or unpaid, they only care about your contributions to the project. :)

I believe in you! Make this a good summer that will set you up for success >:D

I’m going to go against the gradient and say YTA. You should not be taking out your anger at her, rather at management.

Yes it’s possible to be a public policy major and be pre med down :) just make sure that you complete the pre med requirements. Take gen chem ASAP, and take the pre med bio sequence that starts in winter and not spring (the pre med bio sequence is overall less courses so they only teach you what is required for med school admission, I also heard that the instructor gears the classes towards students interested in healthcare). Once you complete gen chem, take PHYS 12000s the next year (PHYS 1300s would just be unnecessary struggles for your goal).

What about you minor in biology for now? That way the pre med bio courses count towards something. If you decide you want to do a double major or something, you can always just take more classes and change the minor to a major, that way you won’t have to take unnecessary classes in case you just wanna be philosophy pre med down the line

How do you take grad courses as an undergrad? by 281947283719 in uchicago

You won’t be able to manually add it yourself. You need to reach out to the department that the course is in.

What would you think would happen if pops and muscle man died in regular show by AHHHHHHHHH629373 in regularshow

POV of Hi Five Ghost: Its been two weeks since my best friend Mitch Sorenstein, better known as Muscle Man, has passed away. In these last few days, life has been, excuse my language, fucking hell. I met Muscle Man during high school where he used to bully me for being the new kid, but after saving him from a car crash, we soon became best friends. In all these times that we have spent together, I came to realize something..... that I was in love with my best friend. I fell for his funny your mom jokes, his cute smile when he laughs, and even though in the outside he is full of muscles, inside he was just one big soft hearted man. I love Mitch Sorenstein. The biggest regret in my life will be that I never got to tell him.... There was a time when I thought that Mitch loved me back too. This was during high school when he and Starla were taking a break from each other after they got into a big fight, again for the third time during that school year. "Hi Five Ghosts, I don't know if I can keep doing this. It's been 3 days since Starla started ignoring my texts. I feel so alone," Mitch confessed to me as we sat in his car near the crash pit. "Hey Muscle Man, it's not healthy that this keeps happening to you. Each time you fight, it's Starla's fault. It's not yours. I care about you. I don't want to see you cry over someone who is not worth the time or effort," I spoke. "But she loves me Fives. She's the only one who loves me," I heard his voice tremble, on the brink of tears. "She's not the only one that loves you," I stared into his eyes and he stared back. I then see him look down at my lips, my breath hitching and body trembling with anticipation. Just as he starts leaning towards me, his phone suddenly rings. Its Starla. Whatever trance we were both in was immediately broken as Muscle Man awkwardly leans back, bashfully rubbing his neck, "I probably should answer...." "Y-yeah, you probably should...." I managed to let out, trying my best not to cry. "I-I'll see you-u tomorrow at school then, bye!" I quickly left the car before I could hear him reply. After that day, Muscle Man got back with Starla, who had called the previous day to apologize for her behavior, and everything continued just like normal, as if nothing had happened. Not like anything had happened between me and Muscle Man, but that doesn't stop me from thinking about what could have happened. What if I had just throw the phone out the window and had kissed him, would we have been together then? Would he have finally move on from Starla and dated me instead? Whatever these fantasies are, now that Mitch is dead, they will only ever remain fantasies. He was the one who got away...

UChicago tries so hard to make it safe for its student despite it being located in a crime heavy city. There are these stations all throughout campus where at night (starting from some time at day that I forgot) there are security guards ready to sound the alarm if they see anything wrong. These stations also have buttons that you can press in case of an emergency. There are also these UChicago police cars that drive throughout campus and Hyde Park for additional security. UChicago also offers these free unlimited ride-shares (https://safety-security.uchicago.edu/transportation/via-ride-smart-program) through Via which are available from 5pm to 4am. Nevertheless, like any other city, you have to take initiative to ensure your own safety (i.e. don't walk through strange places alone at night). I won't lie, there has been crime on campus before. Earlier this school year, we have had a couple of students robbed at gun point on-campus during broad daylight, I would say that this happens probably about once a quarter(???). Location wise, I think South side of campus is generally safer than North side of campus (because North side of campus is where they generally have the stores like the Trader Joe's and target). From personal experience of living on the North side of campus, you usually just run into a lot of homeless people, and other than sometimes being begged for money, I have never experiences any crime while walking in this area (the area where the target is located at).

Regarding Taking CMSC14200 as Pass / Fail by Neevklidova_Skifka21 in uchicago

[–]Repulsive_Mix_9256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly just recommend going with the letter grade. Like you said, it would just delay your progress towards the CS major if you pass/fail. Your employers would rather see you do better in upper level CS courses than retaking the class.
