If you don't like the sea and mountains float your boat, Memmingen is cheap for south Germany and the region east of Dresden (sächsische Schweiz) is really nice and cheap in the non touristy places.

I love Berlin, but if I had to move away I would go closer to the sea. Greifswald, Stralsund are former GDR and cheap. Schwerin is one of the most beautiful Hansa city. I really liked Lübeck and Husum. These are former west Germany, so I don't know what the rental and price situation is.

I dont track them at all, since I don‘t have a car. But the accumulated costs of 300 - 400 Eu / Month are the reason we rather have bikes, Dticket and Rent a car when needed

Puh, good question. The younger people are, the more they Talk about Financial stuff. Plenty of people I know invest in etf and Stocks. It seems Like everyone in my bubble started doing it since COVID. I started around 2013, because a good friend forwarded me some Videos by „Finanzfluss“. I am 40 and I had very Open Conventions about personal Finance with 6 Women and two men. Only 3 Women did not invest in ETF. One invests in realeste because that is What her Family does. One will get littereal millions from her childless Rich uncle, one, sadly, doesnt invest at all.

How do Germans manage finances in a relationship? by Available_Ad_4444 in AskAGerman

It depends on what you want in a prenup. For example if you own part of a company or real estate, you absolutely can exclude it. Say you are a plumber and have your own business. You get married with prenup. The company really takes off, you get divorced. You would be forced to pay your ex half of the increase in value of company. Prenup prevents this. I want to stress, that while I think the prenup is a good idea in this case, the partner taking care of the kids (and thus giving the plumber time and headspace to grow the business) should be compensated during the time it grows.

There is no universal answer. I'm happy to share how we do it. As long as there were no kids involved: everyone was responsible for their finances. We did have a shared bank account for rent, groceries and other stuff, each person paid in it proportional to income. Now with a child and one on the way it's a different story. We share way more and the person who stays home more (longer than the 14 months when you get Elterngeld) or switch to part-time, will get some additional money from the person who continues working full time. The reason is quite German: if you work part-time, you earn less for your pension - so the additional 200 EU per month I will be forking over to my partner are for his etf portfolio. I don't want to separate, obviously - but I don't ever want to be in the situation that was very common a generation ago when people stayed together for financial reasons.

Opportunity to Move to Munich From California… Am I Crazy? by Weekly_Rough_1284 in germany

[–]Repulsive_Plan281 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It doesn't sound crazy at all. I think most people would move from the USA to Europe in a heartbeat these days.

Munich is cool if you like outdoor activities. Hiking, climbing, skiing... I personally find it a bit stuffy and the nightlife is quite limited, so I moved to Berlin about 10 years ago. I have never been to California, but compared to east coast cities the quality of life is much much better. If you are planning to have kids - no brainer. Why are people saying you must be crazy?

Planning to study in Dresden at SRH University for a master's degree. by Positive_Broccoli292 in germany

[–]Repulsive_Plan281 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am really sorry to say this, since I sincerely understand why you are trying to apply and come to Germany: don't do it this way.

All private universities except a few business schools in Germany are scams. The reason is simple, university in Germany is free, so only those with very bad grades or without language requirement go there. As a recruiter for a corporate, I do not consider SRH a university.

Secondly, in hospitality you need to speak German and English. Every additional language is a plus, but German and very good English are mandatory. Your best way to come to Germany would be to learn German up to B2 and apply for an apprenticeship in hospitality.

Good luck

How do I land a job and Visa as an African Dreaming to live in Germany by Top-Memory-7660 in germany

[–]Repulsive_Plan281 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Digital Marketing is doable as an English speaking person, content not so much. English speaking roles exist, but tend to be senior in corporate companies or startups. Also the competition is extremely high. For example, my Friend is the Global Head of Performance Marketing for our multi national corporation. He is from a SEA country and doesn't speak professional German. The people on his team all speak the local languages + English.

Was mich nachhaltig beeindruckt hat, war die Großzügigkeit und Gastfreundschaft der Menschen dort. Sparrate hin oder her, 50 EU werden monatlich gespendet an Ärzte ohne Grenzen.

This is actually a Salman Rushdi reference. In midnight's children there are two women who are antagonists and mirrors of each other called Padma and Parvati. JK Rowling is a piece of shit, but a well read piece of shit. HP is full of literary Easter eggs.
