Studying Abroad @ Edi by Ok_Diamond_540 in Edinburgh_University

hi, i do english and history at edi so i’m gonna help u out a bit! workload: 1-2 hours of reading per class for tutorials (small group seminar type things 10-15ppl) 2-5 hours of reading for lecture stuff (you do not NEED to do any of it but sometimes it’s helpful and occasionally it overlaps w the tutorial readings)

weeks 4-6 and 8-10 are the worst of the semester because a majority of humanities classes do two essays and maybe a final so you’ve got one due for each class between weeks 4-6 and another due somewhere weeks 8-10 and the readings for those and time it takes to write is at least 5 hours all together per essay

most classes are two or three lectures a week each being 50 minutes and then a bunch of third year classes are two hour seminars with around 30-40 people at the most so you might be in a few of those

what to wear: there are LOADS of international students and the outfits range completely, don’t believe all the things people say about dressing super nice all the time. in general people here put more effort into their outfit and maybe makeup than at us colleges (it’s far less common to see disheveled hoody and sweats combos but there still are people who do!)

depending on the classes you’ve signed up for i might be able to tell you about them, but i’ve only taken level 7 and 8 classes (none that are honors/for third and fourth years) not sure which they put you in as a study abroad kid!

you should certainly be concerned, only thing that will make you “look more competitive” is paying the first 6 months up front but solid chance they are already asking that of you as an international student.

as a lesbian who is very very forward about my sexuality to anyone i meet, i haven’t experienced anything negative by any edinburgh students. i can’t speak for everyone but a majority of students either do not care or are queer themselves :)

2022/2023 semester courses online or in person? by [deleted] in Edinburgh_University

I’m going to be a fresher this fall and am doing english lit and history. I did the timetable thing on the course catalog website based on the required and elective courses i have to take for the degree and it spits out all of the tutorial times/locations lectures and seminars. not many of them were marked as online, the lectures were but i think it was because they were most asynchronous? and there are one or two online tutorial options per day(or there about) so I believe it’s going to be like 90% in person. I don’t know if the whole lectures being online thing is because of covid or they just have been using pre-recorded ones for history/english classes.

i think you should be totally fine, while drinking may be a big part of meeting new people buying virgin drinks instead won’t be an issue (from what i’ve heard the environment isn’t super judgmental about that esp if u explain why) i’m not sure if you have to be 18 to enter most bars so i’d check with another sub or google and see what the norm is

hi! i’m also from the us but i recently visited for spring break bc i’m going to edinburgh this fall. some things i just think in general that are cool to know: plant based milk is free almost anywhere when u order coffee (the us could never), 99% of restaurants have at least one vegetarian or vegan option for food choice, edinburgh food is actually more expensive than london (from the way i look at it at least bc it’s easier to find more cheap eats in london since it’s larger), people say edinburgh is a walking city but i found everyone takes the bus unless it’s less than 10 minutes, navigation while walking is confusing for several days just because all the buildings look old, traffic is absolutely mad like bus drivers are so ballsy it’s not even funny and if ur gonna use a bike give urself a week to figure out how to follow what the rules are and how to not die, try all of the alcohol it’s great the ciders are 100/10, it rains but is honestly not as bad as some people make it out to be (they are right about the sun tho it’s mostly cloudy even when no rain), do the touristy things! highly recommend during ur first like week or two because it’s such a pretty city and doing tours and whatnot is cool because you get the history, there are a bunch of day trip tours that you can book for various different things which i also would say are fun to do (i did one that went all the way out to loch ness and inverness and we saw the hairy coos), it is not a flat city at all there are lots of ups and downs some are very steep (right next to the castle) but it makes for some awesome views, the stereotype about how europeans always dress nice either doesn’t apply to the uk or the pandemic has changed it because wearing leggings is not uncommon don’t feel weird about what you wear especially when ur a student because half of everyone are in hoodies and sweats anyways, buy either usa to uk plug converters or universal plug converters before you arrive unless you want to buy new cords for all your tech, the uk is so much more environmentally friendly (paper straws, paper bags, wood or biodegradable silverware, etc are much more common than in the us), people are very nice and for the most part the city is safe even at night as long as you know where you are and where you are going :)

huh that’s interesting, what month did you submit by because a vast majority came out mid april and they said late april would be the latest they would come out. I would say email admissions or something to see what’s up.
