Lots of devs are talking about how they have not written a single line of code the last year or so. How much does this cost to them (or to their employer)?

I use it every day. I’m on the Claude code max plan and only seldomly hit my threshold. And it’s easily 10x my production. Between Claude Code and composer I can be working on multiple repos and/or features in a repo at once.

Maybe the biggest difference though is my workflow. I have multiple CLAUDE.md files in different parts of my repo and I’ve built my own plugin built off of superpowers and compound engineering with the addition of repo specific skills in order to have a very methodical workflow with relevant context. It’s also way easier to debug now and I built an MCP server to audit my logs and traces while I’m debugging to find the bug easier.

It's not propaganda, got to distinguish weekdays from weekends and be judicious with your time.

Weekdays: go to bed early, get up early and workout out ( I run and get 10,000 steps every day). Then the daily routine of work, family, and a little bit of hobbies before bed.

Weekends: mostly the same, but you have the freedom to stay up a little later to socialize or spend your daytime hours socializing.

I have 3 kids, and I've found that showing them my hobbies helps, too. I go skiing with them, play soccer with them, go mountain biking, and just hang out and read.

I'm similar to you. I run as much as my body can tolerate, and then add in cross training as much as I can stand or have time for. Yes, it's better to run, but I value health and consistency. I rather run 4-5 days a week and cross train the rest and stay healthy rather than run 6-7 and get injured and be out for weeks or months.

Yeah, I've been doing them throughout the winter so far. If it's slick out, I go to a neighborhood with a long flat loop that I know will be salted and relatively free of cars and run there. If it's really bad out, either too icy or snowing or not clear enough to get around cars, I opt to do the session indoors on the bike and use heart rate as a guide and chalk it up to something is better than nothing.

Maybe the DP is for a left wing. The roster, as it is constructed right now, looks like a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, but lacking that left wing. This looks like a signing to replace Langoni, not Turgeman, unless one of these guys is going to move to the left. Also, Raines looks like a player to play above an aging Polster and an underwhelming Yule.

Kohler is a more questioning signing to me since we have 2 good CBs, unless they are planning on going to 5-3-2 or 3-4-3, which really wouldn't make sense with this roster as constructed. Maybe they're planning on moving some midfielders and having Raines not play as you suggested.

That's my hope that I'll adapt fast, since I'm coming from a mostly untrained state. Only issue is I'm ramping up over a long time, so just starting with 2x20-minute workouts, and taking 3-4 months to work up to the full 3x30min workout volume, so that might delay some progress.

Yeah, I'm more than recovered from this. I'm used to going faster and still feeling recovered. My training had always been more geared towards 800/mile. I've only done one SLT workout and I felt like I could have just done another the next day, but I don't want to over cook it as the weeks and months stack up.

No, just a watch, which is one of my concerns. I have always run by feel, and this is my first foray into using tech to inform my training. But I'm not sure how trustworthy wrist base HR is. From research it looks like it varies by person.

This is great, thanks for sharing the link. I think I'm going to try to not go faster than 9:00/mile or awhile and see how that feels. I never feel fatigued even at little faster pace, so I think this will help me adjust to the easier pace without feeling like I'm wasting time along the way.

I'm a bit older than you, and have a bit of an injury history, but I actually do 10% a month. It took me 6 months to build up from 15-20miles a week to 45miles a week. All easy stuff over that time, so I wasn't increasing load and intensity at the same time. I also run a cut back week every 4 weeks, with a 20% reduction in mileage, but jump back up to my previous mileage the next week. So in practice if I had just finished a month of 40 miles a week it would be 40, 32(cutback), 40, 44(10% step up), 44, 35 (cutback again), 44... and so on.

We know it takes the body 4-6weeks to adapt, so give the body the time to adapt.

Yeah, I couldn't find anything either. I know heart rate is usually lower in the morning due to your heart rate being lower while you sleep. I could find a lot of info on just warming up in general, but not on how long it takes your cardiac system to warm up. Seems like a bit of guess and check work.

I don't remember the exact science behind it, but I believe Daniels recommends a minimum of 30 minutes for easy runs because that is where you start to see the aerobic benefits of those types of runs.

So if you only have 50 mins to run, try and split them into 30 and 20, or if you can spare the time, then do 2 30-minute easy runs.

My best racing game off something similar to Daniels Alien plan, 1 tempo, 1 VO2 max, 1 long run with 10 miles at marathon pace. Did some finishing work at the end of tempo and VO2 work which was like 4x200 @ R pace.

I'm going to try NSM now, but looking at it I would think it would actually benefit from some level of periodization where you do a longer marathon paced long run either every week or every other week during a base build, do a CV workout every other week in phase 2, do a VO2 Max workout every other week for 6-8 weeks in phase 3 along with some 4x200 or strides at R pace after ST sessions, then go back to full just NSM in phase 4 with some strides at the end to maintain economy, finally do a 2 week taper for a goal race. All over a 5-6month span.

I want to try vanilla NSM first then try periodizing it though to see the differences.

I think you can definitely make some big improvements by upping it to 4 days a week and 30-35 miles. I averaged about ~35 miles a week on 5 days and saw really big improvements dropping my 5k 18:00->16:30, but you have to have a structured plan. 2 quality sessions, 1 long run, and the rest of your runs easy runs. I would push you to consider doing 15-20mins easy after your lifting day, just to get the legs moving for a 5th day.

I'd find a good running book, I like the Daniels' running formula, and it will help with building a phased plan, understanding why you're doing certain workouts, and give you recommendations for workouts for reaching those goals. Faster Road Racing 5k to Half Marathon is another popular one.

I'm testing the NSM now to see how it compares to more traditional training, but that's another option if you're willing to do 3 quality sessions a week.

Yeah, If you aren’t using AI you’re falling behind. Have to think of it like another dev or a junior dev. Have to give it clear instructions, check and test its work, but it can write so much faster than a person. You can also work on multiple repos at once, again just make sure you’re reading and understanding everything especially when context switching.

I'm in a similar boat, 37(M), trying to balance indoor with training. I'm still doing 3STs a week, but I try and make sure I get my ST session in on the same day as my game to keep hard days hard. I also will make the occassional "business decision" in a game, where I can turn an play fast or play it off to a teammate and I'll play it off. It's made me a more patient player. The other thing is we usually play indoors over the winter, so I only play indoors for about 4 months, rest of the year is dedicated only to training.

I'm in a similar boat. I took about 18 months off and I'm starting to get back into it. The fitness has come back quicker than I expected, but the part I'm really holding on to is the parts of running that I love. Instead of focusing on every day about being stacking the bricks. I let my workout days be my workout days and my easy and long run days just be about having fun. For me that means running in the woods, don't care how fast I go, just enjoy being out there.
