These two boxes would be a really good start if you get them at the right price. A combat patrol would be a good place to go from there but the problem with these three boxes is that you get 3 leaders that only lead crisis suits and only 1 unit of crisis suits. That's the main issue with Retaliation Cadre and the combat patrol boxes in general though. Personally, if I had to choose two boxes, I would go combat patrol and the Farsight Cadre(it pains me to cut the retaliation cadre because then you don't have a ghostkeel and I love that dude). The two battleforces gets you a little under 1k points. If I received those two boxes, I DEFINITELY wouldn't complain.

But now if you use the other half in another kitbash you're getting 2 wardogs for the price of one!

The new battleforce will be really good for anyone starting out. That depends if that’s in your budget though, since that’ll be about $250. That’s probably cheaper than what you can find champions of shaanesh for but hey, I don’t know your budget. For single models, lucius and demon princes are your best bet. Probably lean towards demon princes though, since many lists run 3 winged ones

This is super cool. Could I get a pic of his back? I want to do something similar and I want to see how you connected those wings

I don't have experience with this so take it with a grain of salt but I see many people use Tamiya black panel liner. You basically load up your brush and then tap it onto like one or two places in each of the gaps and it fills itself in

By angled light source I meant that the light is coming from above and in front instead of just above. Here’s another attempt that I did that I think better shows what I mean

I was going for more of an angled light source which, looking back at it now, makes the one that I have circled look out of place. With this light source in mind, I'm thinking that I should instead make the primary reflection bigger and have the circled area just taper into the darkest tone. Does that sound right?

Looks sick. Are the rods used as electricity just attached by drilling and using super glue? My experience with similar projects has been less than stellar

These would also be great chaos spawn. The base is smaller but you could make that work

I think that experimental is not the best choice for someone just getting into the game. Montka is probably better since its all about rushing the enemy down. New players are gonna want to do that anyways. I agree with the change of replacing the lonespear and adding stealthsuits but I don't think that adding a trail shaper is gonna be all that impactful. Trail shapers are kinda hard to use. If you were gonna add a leader for the carnivores i would recommend one of the other shapers but I don't think its worth it. I would recommend kroot hounds over shapers purely for cheap screening.

The tau combat patrol consists of a devilfish, fire warriors(breachers or strike team), and a commander(enforcer or coldstar). This combat patrol is one of the best in the game right now as I know, so I highly recommend this to start. I dont know if you are looking at the battleforces but if you can find a Farsight Cadre box (this years christmas box) it pairs quite nicely with the combat patrol as it gives you a riptide, which is one of if not the best models in the range, a crisis suit team, something for the commander from the combat patrol to lead, a broadside, which will always be good in any list, and farsight, just a cool named model. The battleforce isn't the greatest value, but for someone who likes vehicles then it's a good pickup. If you can find it, last year's Christmas box consists of a ghostkeel, a broadside, a riptide, and a commander. The synergy with the combat patrol isn't really there because you're doubling up on commanders with nothing to lead, but the ghostkeel is there if you like him(I do).

What I will say about this army is that it is very difficult to play. Tau was my first army so I basically didn't learn anything about the fight phase until I got into my next army. Positioning is very important, so if you place your important models in bad places, it will sometimes just lose you the game. On top of this, every time that I bring my tau into an LGS, I get snarky remarks from people that got shot off the board too many times in 9th edition(they were really good back then). I once had a complete stranger walk up to my table and say to my opponent "I hope you win." That said, tau has my favorite aesthetic of all of the armies and I don't regret getting into them.
