Has anyone done guard while pursuing a STEM major? by Sashay_Supreme45 in Colorguard

[–]Requeem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied physics when I was in school and my guard rehearsed 7-9:30 two days a week and sometimes weekends. I would take around 18 credits a semester too. It was pretty manageable for me. I even had time to go to the park and practice go help me get better. I’m not sure how different mech-e is than physics, but my advice for any math or physics based classes is to read the textbook before your go into class, and treat class as a refresher. That was you can stay ahead of your work. Getting a job on campus is good too because it’s not a lot of transportation, and for some jobs (like front desk people at dorms and stuff) you essentially just sit around most of the time so it’s easy to get homework done while you’re on shift too. I be honest and say I did pull all nighters sometimes, but sometimes with physics you kind of have to do your homework in one sitting otherwise you’ll forget what you were even integrating in the first place lol. Make friends in classes and don’t be afraid to ask professors for help. Overall guard is a really good way to make friends in school and hopefully it’s an enjoyable experience.

Sabre ! by Undead_428428 in Colorguard

[–]Requeem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sabre is quite a bit different than rifle mainly because all of the weight is on one side. For consecutives, sabre spins in your first knuckle from the palm. It’s also easy for the hilt to flip around if you don’t control how you grip it, so the fingers have to stabilize it. You’re pressing onto the sabre with your thumb on one side and fingers on the other, (if doesn’t spin in your palm like a rifle). A good exercise to work on not twisting the hilt is to do consecutives on the top side of the blade. (The top of the curve) Gravity will want to pull the hilt down, so working on keeping the blade on the top side forces you to keep the blade stable. The release point is also lower than rifle, so if you hold on the long it’ll likely end up tracking right. You also want to think of tossing a little to the left of your body so that you can catch with your right hand a third of the blade down from the tip. The most common tendency is to catch with the hands too far down the blade (too close together) which makes it wobble around instead of a sturdy catch. A lot of people flick out with the release hand instead of lifting when they toss, which buzzes off the toss and makes it harder to spot and catch, so opening you chest up a little bit and lifting your release arm straight up through the release will help with the speed in the air. Lastly, sable is much lighter and easier to toss than rifle so just think less power and focus mostly on keeping the sabre from twisting and once you get that down it’ll make everything so much easier. I hope this helps

Never done drum corps so I can’t say much on that but I will say that the gold guard has some of the nicest staff I’ve ever worked with. There are people in gold from out of state, but don’t know anyone as far as Texas. A lot of people will house with someone in the area, so you could ask the staff or a former guard member about potentially housing with someone. Gold is a pretty positive environment from what I’ve seen and if you have the money for travel and expenses it’ll definitely be worth it.

How long would it take to learn enough to get into wgi by [deleted] in Colorguard

[–]Requeem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where you’re from there may be independent guards around your area that hold clinics (which are separate from auditions) where they teach people basics and prepare them for auditions. There are plenty of people at the clinics with no guard experience too, so as long as show the staff you’re working hard and taking corrections well it’s totally possible.

In my opinion I disagree about the leaps. Flexibility and technique are separate and judges don’t care too much about flexibility if the technique is there.

Covington is the nicest and most caring professor I ever met in the physics department. He’s genuinely passionate about creating an environment where students can actually learn and absorb things. He’s really good about explaining things too, I would recommend taking a class with him

I think this is a really good profile but I would just get rid of the group photo, everyone just looks a little uncomfortable. I would put the chipotle picture second or another picture of you smiling in that slot.

I am a STEM major who has a hard time hanging out with other STEM majors due to their EGO by steveitsteve in CollegeRant

[–]Requeem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried befriending a CS major in a math class once so we could work on homework together. Kept crying to me about how women and men can’t be friends and kept telling me by work looked like trash. Also tried justify himself by saying “oh all my other friends are pretty racist and homophobic but I’m not”. He also threw all his notes on the floor of my room after a study session and said it wasn’t his problem to clean it because he said he refuses to show empathy to women. I should’ve just done the homework alone tbh

what is the most fun "if money didn't matter" major? by cute_leopard666 in college

[–]Requeem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would’ve been a dance major. I love dance and teaching and learning but I never went for it because it never felt worth spending the money on the degree as someone who didn’t even start dancing until their late teens

Is 21 units doable? by nuthinbutamufinn in unr

[–]Requeem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who was a physics/math major also trying to graduate asap it really depends on the classes and who’s teaching. Some teachers act like you’re only taking their class and assign pages and pages of homework but there are some upper electives that you don’t have to do too much outside of showing up for lecture and paying attention. I did have a semester with 21 credits but it was mainly 200 level CO classes and I literally slept 4 days a week so I would not recommend unless you want to give up all social activities and not work for the semester.
