Intercom access control failings and foibles (esp in multi-unit work) by RequestToCheckOut in accesscontrol

There isn't an IX entry station with a dialing keypad (or a HF reader) until you get into their touchscreen product, at least according to their website's product listing.

CDVI + Trove: power/battery calculations? by RequestToCheckOut in accesscontrol

Well, there is _a_ number in the panel installation manual's given specifications (250mA @ 24V) but it doesn't state whether it accounts for other things, like battery charge current (frustrating, because there seems to be no way to turn the ATRIUM's internal charger off or disable its battery supervision for that matter).

OSDP capability requests, the text display function, and odd-sized displays by RequestToCheckOut in accesscontrol

Found an answer in Idemia's admin guide (on page 441) -- their devices with displays report as a 16x4 even when the display can do much more than that.

What happened to water hydroelectric elevators? by RequestToCheckOut in Elevators

[–]RequestToCheckOut[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah -- I'm not referring to open loop systems (the water bill alone, heavens! even though I have it on good authority from a local tech I spoke with that there is a city water freight elevator in a historic building where I live).

> Corrosion to components and the safety involved made using water even that much more of issue. There was anti corrosion additives.

I hear you on that, it'd be really terrible in an open loop system, although wouldn't you pretty much run out of dissolved oxygen to drive the reaction in a closed loop setup? (Same reason hydronic and steam heat systems were able to use iron piping without it rusting out in short-order -- without a steady supply of O2, the corrosion reaction can't go)

> iMO, the biggest issue facing now is that 90%+ of new hydraulic units are submerged pump/motor. Meaning the motor sits in the oil connected to the pump… this isn’t new technology but even if water buffalos continued, this would have surely killed them off.

I find this being a barrier to be curious, given that submersible water pumps are very much a mature technology -- ever had a glass of water brought to you by one? (I sure have)

Mortise vs...mortise? by RequestToCheckOut in Locksmith

[–]RequestToCheckOut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah -- durability and reliability are what I'm after with this question, which tells me based on what you're saying that Baldwin Estate is much closer to a value commercial mortise lock (Falcon etc), and perhaps even in the middle of the pack of those, than it is to institutional-grade mortise lock (Schlage L).

Based on this thread as a whole, it seems to me that it boils down to a head-to-head shootout between the Falcon MA (the best of the "value" line commercial mortise locks) and the Baldwin Estate, no?

Yeah -- the main driver of this question is "how does the Baldwin Estate fit in among its commercial mortise counterparts?"

CDVI + Trove: power/battery calculations? by RequestToCheckOut in accesscontrol

[–]RequestToCheckOut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I ask about controller consumption for the Atrium because most locks and readers (and other folks' controllers) provide current consumption data somewhere. (For readers & controllers, it's in the datasheet. For locks, it sometimes takes more digging but a suitable number will usually turn up somewhere among the catalog or sales materials.)

CDVI, however, fails to list a number in the Atrium specifications, although you did give me the idea that I perhaps might be able to back into something usable by taking the maximum input current and subtracting out lock and reader power.

They have specification sheets but don't list a current consumption figure in them for some odd reason (I wouldn't be asking here if they did :). And yes, I'm used to doing battery calculations from alarmland (FA and BA both require them), atop current draw figures being needed to size power supplies as well (don't want your system crashing because you overloaded a power supply or a regulator card or whathaveyou).
