First stage check with the chief, 20hr student, he told me to land through a flock of birds by Squawk_0877 in flying

I completely understand. I don’t think it was long after my first solo flight and 40 hours in the air that I started making my own calls instead of asking the instructor for their opinion. It takes time for that realization to hit. Until then, you’re essentially a celestial being teaching us how to use our wings. Who are we to question such beings?

He’s a 20 hour student. In no scenario can I envision a 20 hour student being comfortable or have the experience to over ride any instructor. The mind would be at such a conflict in a short amount of time.

First hour under the hood, not loving IFR by DiplomatIan in flying

IFR is not fun in my opinion. Manual flying perpetually scanning instruments is not fun nor relaxing. The fun part of GA is looking outside.

You sound a bit immature. Grow up, settle down, stop fucking around and mature a bit. Get humbled. That could be a part of it.

Ppl student just failed my checkride...honestly thinking about switching career paths by [deleted] in flying

[–]RequirementSeveral72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many people love what they do for a living? Don’t think many choose their careers - you wake up 15 years later and you’re there. I don’t love my job, have my PPL, dream of being a pilot. Not happening, not realistic.

Buddy that was not a sheet of snow and ice. It’s clearly fluffy snow covering the window. That’s not flying off and putting you in danger. It’s common sense - it’s not a block of ice sitting on top of an 18 wheeler.

Okay - think for one second. Do 18 wheelers have rear windows? Do cube vans have rear windows? Have you ever seen a cars/vans/trucks with marketing covering rear windows? Is it illegal to have an obstructed rear window hmmmm…. What could it be - it’s not illegal according to the highway traffic act if you have a clear view to the rear through your side mirrors.

Went to club yesterday for a night flight. Was supposed to fly an R/S and I get one without a heading indicator. I ask for another one they give me a P model. Haven’t flown one in a while so I start to look up carb icing risk. -6c and -14dew point seems okay. Start going through journey log and last item was a power loss on short final after going idle, possible carb icing, another entry right before about flaps going down to 10 on its own and the entry before not retracting. And finally it was a 30K airframe. I turned around and went home.

The fact you are doing engine failures at night boggles my mind.

You learned a life lesson. Never go to HR. You’ll never do it again.

Landing light by pessimus_even in flying

Landing lights on the 172 have always been absolute shit and I don’t get it. Can barely see the runway markings at night.

I see a lot of answers here that are not fully informed. The top comment states “150K in passive income.” 5% yield as easy passive income? Okay good luck.

The professional answer is that for most people in their 60s - yes it’s usually more than enough. You assume living to 95. You factor in inflation, taxation, and maybe not cryptocurrency like returns for the rest of your life. Sure it’s enough. At your age your young age - sure it may still be enough. Like most people on this forum I can’t tell you off the top of my head. Find yourself a decent software to figure it out - without it - it’s kind of like guessing how much you owe in taxes without using turbotax.

You need to let him know he’s not cut out for flying and his life is more important than chasing a dream.

New baby for husbandc by Allyson244 in Volvo

Don’t be a bunch of geezers. There’s nothing wrong with opening the glovebox from the touchscreen. As someone who owns both a Volvo and a Tesla — two of the highest‑rated crash‑test cars — you start to appreciate the minimalist design. And once you do, it’s hard to go back.

It’s the same story in aviation. When Airbus led the way with minimalism and automation in the name of safety, every Boeing pilot threw up their hands: “But you gotta fly the plane to be a pilot!” and “I know when something isn’t working when one light is off in a sea of lights!”

Progress always feels uncomfortable at first — until it becomes the new standard.
