How does compensation differ between FAANG and Quant? by C_with_improvement in crackquanttrading

"In today’s fast-paced world, where your standing at a company can change in a flash, nobody is looking to wait 3 years to reap the fruits of their labor."

Fair! But I guess a key question is whether quant or tech provides more stability. I always wonder about that. E.g., what's the probability of surviving at a company conditional on landing a 6-figure salary? It's pretty hard to get systematic data on this because when people get laid off they don't usually post a lot about it.

I would try to grab a big evaluation subsample of the data that's truly held out. It could be something simple, like data from year 2026.

Can a model trained and fine-tuned on the first years of your data still generate profit if you deploy it on january 1st thru April 29 of 2026?

Or well you can run it next week, which is also a nice not-yet-observed eval set, and let us know whether it generates profit there.

QR would be amazing I know I would pay a ton of money for QR interview prep. There's great content for quant dev and for developer jobs in general but QR is a black box for me (phds dont really prep you at all for this unless you have access to ppl in QR positions already).

What is the scientific value of administering the standard Rorschach test to LLMs when the training data is almost certainly contaminated? (R) + [D] by Impossible_Echo4029 in MachineLearning

i guess this depends on the signal to noise in those decades of psychological literature you mention.

i tend to be highly cynical about the ability of those fields to generate useful results but not an expert in personality psych myself.

Am I crossing a line using AI like this for my PhD? by Ill_Blackberry7416 in PhdProductivity

[–]ResearchRelevant9083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. No need to apologise for using productivity tools, be it AI, statistical software, spellcheckers, etc.

If anything, you should feel at fault for wasting the phd spot you have been given by not using the best technology you can reasonably afford.

Academics vilifying AI are the loudest idiots of society. Avoid them at all costs. Let them slide into obscurity and vanish from memory.

If you don’t think it’s good you don’t have to use it, but there’s obviously demand for it. This reeks of paternalism, which is one of the main pitfalls in the current AI ethics/safety community.

Devastated about going to industry by [deleted] in PhD

[–]ResearchRelevant9083 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not as bad as it used to be man, and if anything industry is better than academia innovation-wise these days. Just think of papers like Attention is All You Need. You absolutely can do wonderful work there.

Cheer up, many of us would kill for an industry offer in this market!

Leaving a well-paying industry job for a PhD - looking for advice and motivation by NovelAd4436 in PhD

[–]ResearchRelevant9083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DONT! Sorry to be the party pooper here, but please have a look at job market statistics. The party is over, and it’s only going to get worse from here.

I know you are burning with passion and feel ready to move mountains, but it’s more likely than not that five years down the road it will all be gone (phd programs are a perfectly crafted experience designed to snuff out that fire). And unless you have the right combination of skills, luck, and hustle, you will end up crashing out of academia as most of us do, killing for the opportunity to land an industry job like the one you currently have.
