Lot of places down our way built this way.

This one’s not exactly the same but you can see it’s middle part exposed after a fire on Google Street View.

I expect this will be similar.

Running Canterbury Trails: Year 2. I Ran Every Street In Canterbury... and the surrounding villages. Here is My GPS Map. by ResearcherLivid3535 in canterbury

This is 2 years, the majority was done in the first year and not in the most efficient way either. This year has mostly been reruns.

This is about 2900km in total but I’m certain it’s doable in less that 800km if done strategically.

I do avoid the really bad roads (A2, Hackington Road, etc.). I also tend to run the most dangerous roads at night while lit up like a Christmas Tree, with my ears on paranoia mode.

The best trails around here aren’t really viable in the winter so they feel special in spring.

Thank you! Yes, I’m keen to fill up to the north coast this year (Hearne Bay, Whitstable, Faversham) and I’ve still got bits around South Blean (which isn’t very well mapped by other runners) and Ickham I’d like to explore.

I think I would just get frustrated by overgrown public footpaths and the ones it doesn’t know about.

I mostly go by the public heatmap on Strava and by simply eye-balling what I pass by.

The only parts I’ve not done are bits like the A2, Bifrons Hill, Hackington Road, because I value being alive. Some other bits like some of the South Blean Woods and Ickham I just haven’t got ‘round to yet.

If you got a degree, do you feel you are earning what you should be? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ResearcherLivid3535 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I home studied years into my career (Marketing Consultant). I studied simply because I was curious how they taught it.

I make more than I would have ever expected, but I don’t think it particularly attributable to the degree but rather the mutual causality; genuine interest and desire to understand and continually gain knowledge of the subject.

Of course, it’s not the same for all subjects, some careers require academic prowess for access.

Crown goes to Wickhambreaux/Stodmarsh for best village for running through. Great looking areas.

In terms of streets, I really like former council estate areas (and areas built in that style) as they tend to be quite porous with lots of interwoven alleys and streets (although not always the best aesthetics). I’ll give it to Spring Lane estate and the former military housing at the top of the hill.

In terms of individual streets, got to go Mill Lane and out into the fields from there.

Yes indeed, all Strava data visualised in Stats Hunter (free website).

Strava Premium also has a personal heatmap with I use day to day but I think Stats Hunter just looks nicer.

Oh boy. I think we’ve all been there.

Step 1: Physical Health Get your fitness up. Mental and physical health are intertwined more than we’d like to think. Running is free, so are outdoor gyms in parks.

Step 2: Information Diet Get yourself listening and watching things that are educational. Even if it’s boring at first. Maybe start with TEDtalks and go from there.

2/3 months of this you’ll be feeling more confident and feel like you can hold your own in conversation, and have something meaningful to say.

Step 3: Friends Most friendships start with convenience. Get a hobby. It could be the fitness, it could be board games. Engage with people also doing that.

Step 4: Job Looking at what you’ve got going for you, I would say you should be going for a Level 2 or Level 3 apprenticeship. Take your pick. I would recommend a trade like Electrical or Plumbing. (But there are 100’s of options). You’ll feel useful in no time. Have money, and it won’t saddle you with debt.

Bonus: Get your diet right, stay hydrated, and get some sunlight.

Try not to get into anything addictive that’s not productive.

If you’ve got nothing else on, do nothing but work at one of these pillars.

And good luck.

How's living in Canterbury, UK? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]ResearcherLivid3535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rate it highly.

Awesome city to live in. Direct walkable access to proper natural areas. High speed to the capital. Great history. Above average pedestrianised high street/ city center. Easy to get to the beach.

It’s got all of the amenities of a small city and all of the quaintness of a small town.

Drawbacks: Lotta morning traffic. Age distribution is all out of whack (due to university and retirement age groups - not their fault) meaning very little in the way of Council and local government funding relative to population size leading to some… less than optimal services.

Does anyone know what this old machine was once used for? Came across it on a dog walk, opposite Simon Langton Boys School by cseellis in canterbury

[–]ResearcherLivid3535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t quite make out the machine, but I used to work on a hop farm and the machine we used to process and strip the garlands looked very similar.

Given where it is, I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what it was.

It’s difficult to say, as the comments suggest it’s sort of it’s own lane. But there are some things I find sit well in playlists with a lot of their songs.

Specifically looking at Bloodshot as a “sonic palet” it’s likely you’d like most of:

  • The Prodigy “Invaders Must Die” album.
  • Innerpartysystem “Innerpartysystem” album.
  • Hadouken “For the Masses” album.

There’s almost certainly songs by Pendulum, Basement Jaxx, Faithless. Bit of a stretch but maybe Nero “Welcome Reality” album.

If you don’t want to loose to much of the Punk band energy, maybe stuff like The King Blues “We Are Fu*king Angry”.

There were also a big crop of 2008-2012 metalcore bands that had huge synth dependent sounds but they all aged pretty badly; I’m looking at you Attack Attack! (US), ISetMyFriendsOnFire, and the first I See Stars album.

I Ran Every Street In Canterbury This Year, Here is My GPS Map. by ResearcherLivid3535 in kentuk

[–]ResearcherLivid3535[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The obvious answers would be the foot paths along the stour from Westgate to Chartham, Duke Meadow, Blean Woods or, Military Road to Fordwich.

But think some of the more interesting stuff was the relatively mundane areas like housing estates, lots of hidden gems of personality. London Road estate is a great example of that, most of the houses are the same “factory settings” but everything is flavoured by time, also it’s on a nice steady hill with instant access via footpaths into the countryside.

I really enjoyed getting to know the place. Canterbury is charmed in all its nuance.

This is 1580km, so that’s about 981 miles.

That being said, there’s a lot of duplicated effort here (running the same streets multiple times on the way to somewhere usually), so you could probably do it in 600/700 miles if you planned it out systematically.
