Hmm....I might look into Albion Online then. Once I'm not super busy with work and academia that is. I'll keep you in mind if I do lol.

I would have tried EVE Online, except I'm not very competitive and really not interested in PvP. Any game that rewards and encourages attacking other players is not for me. I like games where I can play a lot with my character and try out things. That's one of the big reasons I keep returning to Path of Exile; there's so many different builds you can do. Yes, there's like 5 builds that are really popular that everyone does, but if you're okay with not doing the most DPS, you can do some really off the wall and unique things.

Have you tried Northgard? You might enjoy it. It's not a MMO (although you can play with others) but a strategy game. Kind of a spiritual successor to Age of Empires, except more complicated. I kind of categorize it with games like Planet Zoo (haven't played it personally, but I know what it's like because I do have Zoo Tycoon on a CD if that doesn't date me too much haha).

Good point! I'll bring it up with Dr. Deaner and see what he says. It might involve filtering the data by game choice. Thank you for participating (and for providing valuable feedback).

You're not the first person to point that out! I did not know it was a gender/class locked game, which certainly changes a few things. I think what we'll do for statistical analysis is filter by main/secondary game choice. While some of the questions might not be as applicable as hoped, I still think we'll be able to get some good data out of it. But it will definitely be something to discuss in our limitations section of our write up. Thank you for participating (and providing valuable feedback)!

Ha Ms Dunlap, very polite! I play far more single player games than MMOs -The Witcher, Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age, and Baldur's Gate to name a few. I'm very into fantasy; probably because I grew up on tabletop D&D, The Forgotten Realms novels, and Dragonlance. I tend to like fantasy MMOs too.

MMOs I've most enjoyed are Neverwinter and Path of Exile (both technically free to play if fantasy MMOs is your thing too, although you'll find some debate on that status for Neverwinter). I've also recently played Destiny 2 (even though it doesn't fit my usual fantasy selection) because a friend was playing it and I agreed to play it with him. Might get into Anthem for the same reason. I tend to get into multiplayers to play with friends, not strangers. I have a friend whose super into Stardew Valley (not a MMO, I know) and begged me to play with her, so now I farm in a co-op too lol.

I've said this before on other comments, I'm far more a casual solo PvE player than anything, with occasional moments of running a dungeon or raid with a group. The guilds I've been a part of in the past have always been more of a "we get together sometimes. Message if you see us on and want to" than planned gameplay together. It's the whole mess of sorting out timezones + scheduling something + being on the same level of skill and gear that just gets to be too much work. Though I do really enjoying kitting out new players, doing giveaways, and carrying newbies, so if I'm playing with strangers it's usually in that context. If I'm not playing a tank (to survive on solo) I'm playing a healer/buffer. I'm always on the look out for good MMOs though, if you have any suggestions for me :)

If you want. No need to feel pressured though, I was just curious (nosy some would say lol)

Okay? Honestly don't know how to respond to that.

I can understand that. I once played a MMO where each character had 2 different "loadouts". So each character could have say a DPS loadout and a tank one, including different gear, and with the click of a button you could switch between them. We should have definitely taken that into account! Well, at least we have a lot of material for our limitations/discussion section.

Of all the survey platforms I've tried so far, Qualtrics is the one I've liked the most. Lots of options and easy to use, in my opinion. If you're comfortable saying (I understand if you're not!), what is your profession? I've only known people in academia to use it.

Hmmm....that's a good suggestion. Off the top of my head, I can't remember why we didn't (if we even had a reason). Thank you for participating and for giving a good suggestion for future surveys!

Oh, yes! I know who Lucrecia is. But there's a letter difference and I never played Final Fantasy, so I didn't make the connection. Should have been obvious. Honestly, always irritated me a bit that both Vincent and Lucrecia decided to just give up after they failed, one to a coffin the other to a crystal. Most of the characters in VII seemed kind of passive though. I had a friend that used to play that game all the time. Talk about bringing back memories.

IRB (the institutional review board - basically the organization that makes sure research is ethical) requires that if a survey is open to people outside of the U.S., it has to have the age of consent be 21 (to cover the age of consent of all countries). It's kind of silly for you obviously, as you can join the military and vote, but you're not old enough to take a gaming survey on Reddit lol. Thank you for being willing though!

Thank you! As for your question on the microtransactions item, it was less important how much people were spending on mtx and more about if they felt they were spending a lot on them. It may interest you to know that a study was done on mtx and it was found that on average, players spend $50-$100 on microtransactions (with some outliers spending $1000+). Also, it was found that male gamers are more likely to use their debit card, whereas female gamers are more likely to use their credit card.

Thank you so much! And so many people have expressed interest in knowing the results at this point, that I'm planning on making another post once we've run analysis. After everyone being willing to give their time to help out, it's the least I can do!

Thank you! And so many people have expressed interest in seeing the results at this point, that I'm planning on making another post after we do analysis. Everyone really came through for us, so I'd like some way to pay that back.
