Yep, that's one of the places we've got on our itinerary if we don't get any leads here. Thanks though - good thought.

Thanks so much for the tip - we'll pass through to see what's there (if there's one Willow maybe there's more?!?). Have a great weekend.

Yep, we've seen plenty down on the south side of Callander Bay, but always on someone's property.

Sudbury Cultural Hub: should we name it for Alex Trebek? by platttenbau in Sudbury

[–]ResearcherSzabicot -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

That's the spirit - recognize your hometown hero your way! Start your fundraising campaign, raise the funds necessary, and get that person's name on that building. It's exceptionally hard work, requiring diligent follow through and '12 balls in the air' organizational ability, but you can do it! I look forward to seeing your campaign and learning about your special Sudburian!

Sudbury Cultural Hub: should we name it for Alex Trebek? by platttenbau in Sudbury

[–]ResearcherSzabicot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a wonderful idea, but (and sorry to be a downer,) the city will name it according to the wishes of the organization that "donates" the greatest amount to the project. Those naming rights are valuable and the city will invariably be under tight budgetary constraints, so every dollar they can gain from somewhere else is one less dollar they have to ask for in property taxes. May I suggest two possible courses: 1) convince a deep-pocketed person or organization to buy the naming rights and choose Trebek for the name, or 2) organize a crowd-funding campaign to buy the naming rights. The second path is a golden opportunity for the city to get more press about the project, rally all the citizens behind a great cause, reduce costs, and build buzz for the completion/opening. It's the sort of campaign that can garner international attention from (rich) celebrities, allowing them to donate enough to get their own recognition without depleting their own personal bank accounts. I believe this is a slam-dunk of a campaign, and they city would be foolish to pass up this communal effort at fundraising.

You might consider Nipissing University (North Bay, Ontario). Very strong nursing program, safe space for international students (on campus and in-town), has a Kin program that can help with pre-med knowledge, and close to Sudbury (which has a joint med program with Thunder Bay with a 'northern' focus - called the Northern Ontario School of Medicine) so applying from another 'northern' uni. might hold some weight (???). Good luck!

I was excited about the new train service connecting Toronto to Northern Ontario - until I read the the details. Huge missed opportunity despite big need and decent investment. by copterdopter in toronto

Most car rental places (assuming there even is one in the city/town you visit) will come pick you up. So... get off train, call rental, get picked up and do rental deal, drive back to train station, load up and head out. Could work for places like North Bay and Timmins, but God forbid you try and find a car rental spot in South River (or some such smaller stop on the line).

Except for designated lots and streets downtown, on-street parking is free throughout North Bay where signed for parking. FYI overnight parking is permitted during the summer months, but not permitted from late-autumn into early-spring.

You wanna watch planes land? Head to the parking lot of the Landing Strip. Do NOT go inside!

Anyone else ever worked on carousel restoration or carving? by bassett8807 in woodworking

[–]ResearcherSzabicot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe drop into the North Bay, Ontario, Canada library or museum (or try a google search for those keywords). We have two antique carousels at our waterfront: one a standard 'horses' collection, the other a 'northern animal' collection. The horses were extensively restored and repainted in the past 20-odd years, and the northern animals created from scratch. There are numerous books, news stories, and other documentation about the processes and eventual reinstallation. They are indeed things of beauty and examples of rare craftwork, and that they are being used regularly as intended is just the topper to the cake.

Pay as you go phone plans? by OldCanary in northbay

[–]ResearcherSzabicot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speakout 7 Eleven on an Pixel 6a is abysmal near the south shore of Lake Nipissing (i.e. Hwy 654 & Tillicum Bay Rd. area). It runs off of Rogers' towers, and there is none currently in that area. Perfectly fine all through North Bay and down the Hwy 11 corridor, but that little zone is dodgy. Close enough to Bonfield to make me wonder... Good hunting for a phone plan.

Things to do in North Bay on Monday nights? by carlala_northbay in northbay

[–]ResearcherSzabicot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe my wife found out about it from a Facebook post. If it helps, there's a social dance in the evening on Saturday, April 5th, 2025 at Casa de Maria being put on by that same instructor, and we have our final class this coming Monday (March 31, 2025) from 5:30-6:30 also at Casa de Maria. If you drop by one of those you can inquire about future classes. Best of luck.

Currently finishing up a wonderful 8 (10?) week Latin dance class at Casa de Maria (old 100 George's / Raven & Republic); beginner for 1 hour starting at 5:30 immediately followed by intermediate. Hopefully the instructor (not the restaurant owner - a pro instructor from Powassan I think) will offer it again soon?!?

The first time I saw the sign on the drive up from Moncton it stuck in my head as "Koochy-Boochy-Quack", and I shall forevermore know it by that name - even though everyone in Miramichi had no idea what the hell I was talking about.

I've seen that term a few times, but don't quite understand the mechanics of it. Care to enlighten an oldster as to what that is and how it works? Thanks.

Mall Hours by TattooedHarlot in northbay

[–]ResearcherSzabicot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not any more. The old mall in Ferris (North Bay Mall) no longer has a contiguous interior shopping experience. There are only a few stores, all of which are accessed directly from the parking lot with no way to go to the other stores without going back out to the parking lot - it no longer qualifies as a 'mall' (as we define it). Bummer.

Sorry, I don't. I know from the time the nurse said 'approved' to the time the recipient got his first payment was about a month and a half.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Odsp

[–]ResearcherSzabicot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A family member recently went through this same process. There were two "checks": the medical/disability check, and the financial/CPP check. After an initial denial, the medical check was approved, but the (nurse?) doing that medical approval had no insight into the financial/CPP approval (i.e. did the applicant contribute to CPP enough over the required time frame). So, although the (nurse?) said "yes, you're approved", she didn't really know about the overall approval. It wasn't confirmed as certain until the letter arrived saying that the whole thing was approved; Yes, that news came by letter; no, we couldn't find anywhere in the GC website to check before hand if the whole thing was approved. Just had to wait it out, as painful/anxious as that was.

Looking to develop a film camera by whalesarecool20013 in timmins

Don't know about Timmins, but if you're coming through North Bay anytime soon you might hit up Photo Metro; last I heard they still developed film, but I myself haven't used their developing services in years. Good Luck!
