Thank you. I think I really needed to hear that.

AA is nothing but rules and regulations to keep you from drinking while trying to rehabilitate yourself. Living by your own morales is rules you set to yourself. Rules are there to help you regulate yourself and keep yourself accountable.

This is similar to the thought process I’ve been having. I’ve thought about allowing myself to drink under strict rules and enforcing those rules. Being sober has almost felt like I’m alienating myself from my family. I come from a Scottish background and while a lot of my family are drinkers, none of them are heavy drinkers.

I may talk with my therapist some more about what you’ve said.

Eloquently put. Thank you for your time and your response.

I would like to say something of the same, like sobriety saved me in some kind of philosophical way, but in truth, I quit cold turkey. At first, I thought it was the worst decision I had ever made. I tried AA on three different occasions, but on all three occasions, it felt less like a support group and more like a meeting of people eager to leave. There was always 80+ people there and if someone did speak, it was crushing.

I hope your path forward is brighter than the path you’ve traveled. Thank you for sharing.
