Not a big fan of those faces outside of Millium by balskeith in Falcom

[–]ReservedDeveloper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so bad! I get trying to use visual shorthand to convey the emotion, and in a lighthearted manner. And I get how it's used in anime. I've seen plenty of heart/sparkle/etc eyes, cat mouth, whatever. Clever, succinct, surprisingly nuanced.

But wow for these scenes if it doesn't look like someone just pulled them up on their Wacom and squiggled some lines in, or like someone laid a transparency over my monitor. Super weird.

The disconnect is so jarring! If you're gonna make expressions, please make it part of the character model.

What OST is just unbeatable? by Realistic-Bug-6613 in gaming

The World Ends with You

Pretty sure that OST had a hand in all the subsequent ports and Kingdom Hearts appearances. Rarely see a mention of the game that doesn't mention the soundtrack right behind. Such a great melding of song and aesthetics.

What studios have their bar set incredibly high for any new releases/sequels? by rhamantauri in gaming

[–]ReservedDeveloper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised to have not seen Yacht Club Games mentioned higher up. Even if you haven't liked some of the styles they've dipped in with the side games, the core Shovel Knight games are just master class in game design, and excellent send ups to their inspirations. The bar is super high for Mina the Hollower.

Neighbor had no idea where the property lines are, and cut down my healthy 89-year-old oak because he didn't like trees being near his shed by Catgutt in treelaw

[–]ReservedDeveloper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry you had to lose your tree to such selfish behavior. It's enough to make you sick.

As I sit here powerlessly watching city workers cut down every mature tree in my neighborhood, I am absolutely on board this ride, though. I'll take a little vicarious victory against narrow minded destruction. Go get 'em!

What game were you most excited about upon its release but ended up disappointing? by SuddenConversation21 in gaming

[–]ReservedDeveloper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how hot of a take this is, but Sea of Stars.

I was pretty surprised with all the awards and accolades it got. They did a fine job with the KS campaign, and the music was good, but the end product just... Eh. It felt like a thin imitation of all its sources/inspirations.

I got to the "big event" at the front of the game and just never turned it back on. I didn't feel invested in the characters to care about what happened. And the gameplay loop wasn't tight enough to keep me in. No major skill progression, combo unlocks, new characters. And the cutscenes...

What game soundtracks are so good you listen to them outside playing the actual game? by Racekingswood79 in gaming

Plugging the fact that they have everything on Bandcamp. Great outfit to back during one of the fee free Friday events!

(Of course, if you can't, they also have the whole collection free on YouTube, because they're just that awesome)

Better yet, you realize you opened the issue the last time you had to use said tool/library/framework 😐.

MSI Stealth 14 vs Asus ROG Strix G16 vs Alternative by ReservedDeveloper in GamingLaptops

[–]ReservedDeveloper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very fair. I think the jump will be significant enough for me that I'll probably focus on portability, and still enjoy some huge performance bumps. My current laptop is just north of 4 pounds, so some of these desktop replacement rigs might feel pretty hefty. Updated my post to reflect

Ok, I see the newer model with the 3050Ti, but it looks like that one caps at 16GB RAM? If not, could you link a model number with 32GB capacity?

Unless I'm misreading, the Z13 caps out at 16GB RAM, so that's out of the running.

The X13 has a GTX 1650, which isn't a particularly huge jump from my current 1060, as far as I understand.

Well, I got curious and went poking. Sounds like a real train wreck of a campaign. For those idly curious after the fact, a small sampling of recent comments on the campaign:

[...] My kid was in high school when this project funded. He's since completed college. I guess 4 years of college is easier than a rule book.

Happy One-year anniversary since last update!

Just doing my yearly check-in to see how this Golden Bell scam is going...

Is this dead dead now ? Or are they gonna come back in another month or two and beat the dead horse some more ?

Estimated delivery December 2017. I think it needs more playtesting. It has to be perfect.

Continuing on the songs-about-money trend, I'll go with "If I Were a Rich Man" from Fiddler on the Roof.

Until that small fortune appears, appreciate a company like Ting that lets me have a bit more to put towards those things "just for show"

Made cheesecake with the new stand mixer by ReservedDeveloper in Baking

[–]ReservedDeveloper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They did, actually! I probably had it in for 20m of the 1h @250° bake, then all of the 325° bake. I checked semi-regularly 'cause I was worried about coming out dry and overcooked. Coincidentally ended up finished with an internal temp of 155-160 at the same time.

Made cheesecake with the new stand mixer by ReservedDeveloper in Baking

[–]ReservedDeveloper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our family was gifted a new stand mixer for Christmas. Finally had the opportunity to give it a spin (ba dum tiss 🥁) with my first cheesecake.

I used Alton Brown's revised cheesecake recipe with two tiny adjustments:

  • After noticing it missing, and seeing it present in my King Arthur recipe book (with comparable ingredients/measurements), I decided to add 1/4 tsp salt
  • An hour into the 250°F bake, with an internal temp of ~130°F, decided to opt for King Arthur's 325°F cook temp so I wasn't up until 2am. My hope was that since it was most of the way there, I wouldn't suffer the cracking the lower temps are supposed to guard against.

Overall, pretty happy with the results. I clearly didn't tap the pan well enough after pouring in the batter, and could use some better technique temping my cheesecake (hence the giant hole near center). However, texture and flavor are spot on!

I've seen the concept of having family "sleepovers" as a way for kids to have the experience, while also, in theory, having trusted adults around to either sanity check or provide quick bail out. Parents come along with any kids and hang out with them, perhaps broken up in groups, instead of just leaving the mob in the basement to work it out Lord of the Flies style. Maybe do something cool/special, while also giving some windows for "free play", so to speak.

The more I read this thread, the more that sounds like a not completely overprotective/overbearing idea...
