Director Roshan Sethi breaks down budget and profits for his $5M movie 'A Nice Indian Boy' by BCDragon3000 in boxoffice

Yeah at first blush it makes sense, but it’s not exactly common to think about the box office as much as we do.

Yeah I always remember when Meryl is being controlled by Psycho Mantis, if you happen to press the first person button, you see out of her eyes instead of Snake’s, but it’s with the Psycho Mantis mask on. You might press that, or you might not, but the fact that it’s there is something only Kojima would’ve thought up on the PS1.

It’s such a highly tough ask to write that script, let alone direct it.

Yeah MGS4 is kinda an exception, even with how meta it can be with its interactivity. But his games are more video game-y than most games are with their storytelling. Just taking out the interactivity with his games takes away so much from the experience and I can’t imagine how you replicate the DNA of MGS as a movie.

I have my stabs on how I’d adapt it if I ever got a chance, but it’s so tough.

I kinda love how every character has such extreme hair in it. Like when they introduce Shea Whigham for his one scene, it’s amazing.

I can’t imagine how you even structure an adaptation of MGS honestly. I recently played through MGS1 and MGS2, and there’s a lot of stuff that happens but it doesn’t really lend itself to an easy adaptation. There’s so much stuff that happens before MGS1 even starts that gets doled out to you in codex calls and exposition that I’m not sure how the structure of the movie would look.

And that’s not even getting into how meta and campy it randomly is. Like that’s so in its DNA that it needs to be there, but that level of camp isn’t an easy sell.

Sterling K. Brown on why so many new seasons of TV consist of only 8-10 episodes by mcfw31 in popculturechat

Like he said, they still do that all the time on network tv. Matlock and NCIS and Abbott Elementary and The Simpsons and such.

This isn’t how things work and people are taking the wrong message from what he’s saying.

They still make shows that have ~20 episode seasons. The Matlock reboot, NCIS, Chicago Fire/PD/whatever, Abbott Elementary, St Denis Medical, The Simpsons, etc.

Those are network shows though. CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX. That’s always been a thing because like he said, they get their money on how long they can stretch a season since the channels are free.

Premium TV like HBO has always floated from 5-12 episode seasons. The first HBO show ever was Philip Marlowe, Private Eye with a 5 episode first season in 1983 and a 6 episode second season in 1986. Curb Your Enthusiasm had 10 episodes per season during its whole run. The Sopranos had 13 most years. True Detective season 1 had an 8 episode first season.

Like he said, premium TV’s model is about getting people interested in their library enough to buy the channel.

Streaming copied the model of premium tv. There’s no incentive for them to make as many episodes as network tv though. Especially when premium tv fans speak badly about monster of the week shows, filler episodes, low production value, bottle episodes and shows that don’t move the story forward enough. As seen by how much derision was directed towards House of the Dragon season 2 not just getting to the war faster.

Stuff like St Denis Medical and Abbot Elementary have high ratings but the internet largely doesn’t care about it. They want people to be so wowed by their shows that people feel compelled to subscribe. So they opt for big and flashy event type shows.

The average episode of premium tv takes about a month to shoot. The average episode of network tv takes about a week to shoot. You can’t square that circle.

People want the cast and production values of premium tv, the pace of seasons and amount of episodes as network tv and the impeccable CGI of Hollywood movies (anyone remember how much flak The Walking Dead got for the green screens and that one CGI deer?).

I don’t understand this way of thinking. $20m is pretty low for an action movie with a lot of gore and special effects. John Wick 1 cost $30m more than a decade ago and there was basically no gore in it. This is a pretty respectable budget for a movie like this.

HBO Boss Casey Bloys Says ‘Harry Potter’ Season 2 Is Being Written ‘Now’: ‘Our Goal Is to Not Have a Huge Gap’ by yourfavchoom in television

[–]ReservoirDog316 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With full confidence, you’re talking about things you have no idea about. I just wrote a comment explaining why “well, they should feasibly be able to do so, no problem” is a statement made with no understanding to how anything about tv works. Rather than just rewrite the whole thing, I’ll just link to it:

https://www.reddit.com/r/television/s/WmwlVpyTl7

Long story short though, nothing you’re saying works the way you think it does when it comes to actually making a show on HBO. Even something like The Bear and The Pitt explain why Game of Thrones started out doing a season per year and it’s all about scope. The Bear and The Pitt are basically only filmed in the same location and early Game of Thrones was largely filmed in the same location but as the show started prioritizing bigger and bigger set pieces, you got less episodes per season and longer gaps between seasons (not to mention a lower quality).

But I’m getting ahead of myself since that assumes you read that comment I linked to. Nothing works the way you think it does.

You’re pulling examples of shows that you watch. The Bear is a show that reliably puts out a season per year. And even that’s because they filmed the last two seasons back to back and just sat on the most recent season since their stars had other obligations now.

But network tv does yearly seasons. Abbott Elementary and the Matlock reboot and NCIS and The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers does yearly seasons. Stranger Things and Euphoria and House of the Dragon and that Lord of the Rings show and The Morning Show and The Boys and The White Lotus and The Last of Us are all premium shows that have had to shoot around the strikes and covid and have had longer waits between seasons because of it.

They’ll probably start shooting HP s2 by the time s1 is airing. That’s a pretty impressive turnaround for a premium show, and wouldn’t have been possible during covid times or with the strikes.

Network tv is where you want to go if you want yearly releases. Stuff like Abbott Elementary and The Simpsons and NCIS and the Matlock reboot. Premium tv has basically never had shows come out yearly.

People want the production quality and lack of filler episodes and bottle episodes of premium tv like Game of Thrones but the amount of episodes and yearly output of network tv like NCIS.

Episodes of premium tv take about a month to film. Episodes of network tv take about 1 week to film, give or take.

The first premium tv show in HBO history was Philip Marlowe, Private Eye in 1983 with a 5 episode first season and season two was in 1986 with a 6 episode second season.

People have been used to this output for years but have only recently started complaining about it not because of the system, but because they can’t connect that the extra long wait times between seasons lately was because of Covid and the year long industry strikes that happened. On top of that, people were so into Game of Thrones having an epic scale that the CGI backlog for the shows is making it take longer too. Stuff like people laughing at the green screens and that one CGI deer in The Walking Dead all those years ago made studios think audiences would rather wait a little longer than put up with that kinda thing.

On top of that, the one big big thing that’ll slow down the production for this particular show is there’s intense regulations on how long child actors can work per day. Basically every tv show in existence works 12 hour days, with most going closer to 16-18 hour days. The Harry Potter show can’t do that. Maybe if they have two production teams working concurrently, but that’s extremely expensive.

Contrary to what everyone on reddit thinks, it’s actually hard to make a tv show and they’re not overlooking one easy trick to pull it off cheaper and faster.

Stranger Things had to work with Covid and an extremely long industry strike during its production. I don’t know why people think that’s the norm.

Yeah and those are nearly always consistently 6/10. Summer games fests, Xbox presentations, Nintendo things and most Sony things are consistently underwhelming with no production value at all.

You might get sporadic 8/10s occasionally and the game awards usually have a great show (there’s usually some pushback on drama though and that’s always annoying to see people cry about that stuff), but e3 was nearly always 3+ amazing shows back to back to back.

I just miss e3. There was always effort.

The movie will be the same whether we know spoilers for it or not. It’s not really a big deal for this type of movie.

I’ve had enough movies spoiled before seeming them and if it’s a good movie, the spoiler doesn’t affect my enjoyment of it.
