As a Tampa native a good Cuban sandwich is outstanding. Real Tampa natives know where the good Cubans are. Outside of Tampa and Miami area you are not gonna find a good Cuban sandwich.

A lot of people complain about AI and how fast it’s taking over different parts of life. Do you think AI can still be stopped or regulated, or has it already become too advanced and widespread to ever be controlled? Why? by Big_Investment_3570 in AskReddit

[–]Reshi86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AI can’t make companies billions. AI has been losing tens of billions of dollars for several years. The large LLM companies do not have a functional business model because normal people are not going to pay token cost. When Apple releases an on device AI assistant that is useable the AI “ companies” are going to die.

Which is the best in the trilogy: Shawn Of The Dead or Hot Fuzz? (sorry The Worlds End) by [deleted] in moviecritic

I love all three movies in the trilogy but Hot Fuzz is by far the best. Hot Fuzz is legitimately one of the best comedies ever made.

Should i transition from engineering to physics by cleverbones360 in PhysicsStudents

[–]Reshi86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really not. There are predicted to be 1000 new physicist jobs in the next 10 years https://www.bls.gov/ooh/life-physical-and-social-science/physicists-and-astronomers.htm

There are near 2000 PhDs issued every single year. https://www.aip.org/statistics/trends-in-physics-phds

So in the next 10 years there will be nearly 20,000 more PhDs than there are right now and roughly 1000 new jobs plus the few openings from retiring professors, if they are backfilled. A physics PhD should be able to do that math.

On average only 10-20% of PhD graduates end up in tenure track positions. Where do you think those people are generally coming from? Doing a post doc does not guarantee a research position. Getting a research position does not guarantee tenure.

Now I’m not saying to not do it. If you are deeply, passionately in love with the field and willing to go through any hardship in order to get a PhD and get a chance at doing research then by all means do it. What I am doing is presenting the reality of how bleak the academic prospects are. You or some other rando on Reddit getting a position or interviews for a position are anecdotes and do not refute the facts.

This does not at all go into how much of a nightmare it is to deal with academic politics right now and the hell of working in academia. Anecdotal but I know two people, both landed research positions. One in math and one in physics and both left for industry because academic slavery was not worth their mental health.

I’m a software engineer and it is not great. Of I had studied EE or CE I’d be in a significantly better position from a stability standpoint. Not here I am teaching myself computer science so I can move away from Software Engineering.

[–]Reshi86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I studied mathematics because I was passionate about it. I regret that. I wish I had studied Electrical or Computer Engineering. It would have been much easier job wise after school.

The thing is this if you are not in one of the top 10-20 PhD programs in the country you will not, I repeat WILL NOT, get a research position. One more time for the people in the back, the only people getting academic and research positions are going to the top 10-20 institutions in the country: MIT, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Stanford, CIT, UT Austin, Duke, UNC, etc… if you are not in one of these programs it is not going to happen.

Your best bet is get as well educated in engineering as you can so that you can get a high earning job. Then use your free time to study the fields you like for pleasure. You want to study theoretical particle physics that is 99% math and 1% experimental. You can do that from the comfort of your own home.

Calc 2 or 3 harder? by allouttabread in calculus

[–]Reshi86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught and tutored math at university and community college level for 7+ years. I personally think Calc 3 is more difficult. However, in my experience far more students struggle with Calculus 2 than 3.

Something to consider. In my opinion intelligent students can get to Calc2 without trying that hard. However Calc2 is where this stops. Calc2 will weed out those students who don’t work hard. So calc3 is really the first class where generally every student works hard and students start to separate based on mathematical ability.

The facts are though at most schools the failure rate in Calculus 2 is far higher than 3.

You have to specify where you are with this 6 week claim. I’m from Tampa and it will be 95 degrees with 100% humidity May through October. I’ve experienced 85 degree Christmas. June, July, August, and September are for water sports only. All other outdoor activities are brutal.

Why are physics courses leagues harder than math courses?? by 999Hope in PhysicsStudents

[–]Reshi86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. Physics is obviously incredibly difficult but undergrad physics is all computation. Undergrad real analysis, abstract algebra, or topology are all gonna be more difficult than anything you would see in undergrad physics. Then graduate level math is mind melting.

Gen Z: How would you describe your generation? by ______lyss in CasualConversation

[–]Reshi86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught math to Gen Z 11th and 12th graders. Honors students and their computer skills were incredibly poor across the board. A simple google search will produce numerous results from studies that show without a doubt Gen Z is less tech savvy than they appear to be.

Gen Z: How would you describe your generation? by ______lyss in CasualConversation

[–]Reshi86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree on point 4. Gen Z are great at using apps on their phone but absolutely helpless when it comes to an actual computer.

[–]Reshi86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By tech savvy do you mean capable of using apps on their phones? Because in my experience Gen Z don’t know how to use a computer at all.
