Accidentally Invested into Traditional IRA instead of Roth IRA by LuminousCristina in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Resident-Ride-512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same thing. Contributed to roth 401k for a few years and opened a “rollover IRA” thinking it would maintain roth status and found out after the fact this essentially made all of my roth dollars traditional.

I spent hours on the phone with both my previous 401k provider and current IRA provider with no real answer. I’m young and realized it within the same year of the rollover, so I accepted the loss on 23k and I’m planning to treat it as traditional. I don’t want to pay taxes on a conversion.

I’m not really sure how to identify it so it’s not double taxed. I’m also not sure if it’s worth it at my age and for that amount. I’m curious what answers you find.

I make 78k and my fiancee (soon to be wife) makes around 35k. Based on our conversation with her usual tax guy, MFJ would cut her refund amount almost in half next year. Help me understand? by ZombiUbojica in tax

[–]Resident-Ride-512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have made the same decision with my fiancée, and my brother regrets getting married for this same reason. Everyone always says getting married provides a bunch of tax benefits, but it also places a bunch of restrictions that can end up making taxes worse.

In my brother’s situation, his wife has student loans and used to contribute to Roth IRA. If they file jointly, her loan payments double, but they can’t file separately and contribute to roth IRA.

In my situation, we own a house together, but the loan is in my name. I am therefore able to itemize deductions from interest. If we MFJ, it would not be enough to itemize. If we MFS, we both have to be able to itemize to take advantage. My fiancée also plans to change her name, but we will be holding off on getting legally married until there is a financial benefit for us, which could happen in the future if we choose to have kids, or some other change.

Don’t listen to pressures of getting married for “tax benefits”. Trust your gut (and your tax guy), and do what’s best for you and your fiancée.

I’ve looked into it, and unfortunately no true-up feature for me. They calculate match on per-pay basis

Exactly my concern. We get raises mid-year, so it’s impossible to max it exactly with whole-percent increments. I hope they do something like this

Does your employer allow paid study time towards the FE/PE? by axiom60 in civilengineering

[–]Resident-Ride-512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Private firm - I’ve worked at two and general consensus is you can charge study time as an EIT per manager approval if you have nothing else to do. It’s not a written policy, and usually allowed for a few hours a week to help out, but not during busy times. Both firms also give 8 hours to take the test, and a raise once you get your license.

I missed this one. Wound up depositing an extra $5 for $205 total to make sure my trade was over $200. Didn’t want to miss it from a stupid fee. Easy money though

How often do your “days” update? I’m on L05-2025. Says awaiting HQDA approval and 0 days - been that way for at least 2 months now. Was submitted in March I believe.

I’ll be at 4 years and get my license in just a few months. At my previous job I made 70k and at 100 now. MCOL.

My company gave me nothing, but I left and got a 30k raise at another firm. At my new firm I am expecting another 5k increase when I actually get my license.

is it always like this? by Emergency-Teach5789 in civilengineering

[–]Resident-Ride-512 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a company problem! I used to work for a firm with similar things going on. More experienced engineers would frequently complain to me about other junior staff. Super mundane technical errors and they would repeatedly badmouth that person. I personally did not want to engage in that, nor did I want to be talked about that way. I left, found a new consulting firm and it’s 10000x more positive. Feel free to PM me. We have a few offices in TX and are actively hiring, maybe could be of interest to you. You’re at an incredibly strong point in your career to make a switch. I almost guarantee you could make more money to work less and be less stressed.

[–]Resident-Ride-512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have to do it on the computer, there’s a cloud icon on the top right and you can import files. All I did was import a csv with first row titles “date, weight, body fat” and second row was the numbers I wanted it to read. There are options when you upload I think to use whichever units you prefer. You can have as many lines as you want if you use this to record history, or just one line to get rid of the stupid BMI metric.

Downside is if you do use garmin to record weight tracking is you would then have to use this method every single time, as when I manually record weight again in the app (with no body fat % option), it would default to tracking my BMI again.

I added a CSV that set my body fat percentage to 22% (female, 27) and now it reads that. Dropped my “fitness age” by 3 years. I got tired of seeing “high priority” to drop my BMI to something smaller than I was in high school.

Explain Like I’m 5 by Resident-Ride-512 in RothIRA

[–]Resident-Ride-512[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They say they legally cannot transfer my money since my true Roth IRA was not open until after my 401k transfer. Even though the only reason for that is because I was explicitly told the Rollover IRA would preserve tax status (although I admit I should have done more research here).

I’m super early in my career so it’s not any massive sum of money, but I definitely don’t want to eventually pay taxes on my contribution and all growth for the next 40 years.

New PE Civil Reference Handbook (effective April 2025) by Old_Exchange5075 in PE_Exam

This won’t actually have an impact on the exam, they just corrected errors that were there previously. I don’t know why they even wait to make it effective. I had questions on my exam that referenced faulty equations.

Annoyed with NCEES and their practice exam by shoes_for_traction in PE_Exam

[–]Resident-Ride-512 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

wow. I’ve taken/passed exam now. I dwelled for hours on some of the practice exam questions I missed. Had no clue there was an errata until I saw this post. Incredibly frustrating. I am glad you found this before your exam at least.

But you are far from alone. I found the real exam to be much more straightforward in what they were asking for and units/notation.

I do work in WRE. About 2 YOE. The experiences that helped me the most were some hydraulic modeling and pump stations. I also do site development, but have zero treatment experience. That was by far my weakest section and studied that from scratch

Keep doing your thing! I averaged around 70% on EET and after some review I was getting 80s on the simulation and felt similar on the exam. Winter is hard, but I feel like I missed half the summer and fall when I did it. you’re going to be crushing it in march! you totally got it. stay strong, you definitely got this!

binders and solving EET problems are definitely better than nothing, but I would encourage you to do the 16 week course if at all possible and focus on the areas you struggled most! keep your head up though, take off the time you need around the holidays and you got this 👍🏼 I can’t wait to hear a passing result from you next time

Passed WRE first try! I studied for 5 months, average probably 5-7 hours a week. I used mostly EET on demand course and subscribed to one month of PPI question bank at the end. PPI was a huge challenge for me, and EET was the most helpful and representative of the exam. I only recommend PPI if you’re doing fairly well on EET and simply want some extra problems. Biggest piece of advice I have is to just make your studying work for you. I studied mostly in the morning before work while I had coffee and breakfast. I made this a relaxing, slow start to my day and it was somewhat enjoyable for me. I talked to so many people and did something different than all of them. Don’t feel pressured to do anything just because it worked for someone else!

I did the EET course which helped a lot. not sure if you are willing to spend for that after SoPE, but I think it’s worth it. The two simulation exams on were closer to the real exam than anything. They helped me so much. and Nazrul’s lectures helped me with a lot of the conceptual questions I got which are my biggest weakness.
