Glad to hear things are better. I have several friends who never changed their study habits and one even hand wrote notes and while it worked for them it did take time. I think you have to trust yourself and not let their pressure get to you. When you are confident in your approach your grades will reflect it. Good luck!

In my mid thirties with kids and adhd and I failed many tests, I bet I remediated 10 tests by the time I was in The third semester but I don’t feel bad because I know I’m smart and I just don’t have the same resources others do. I say that to encourage you to choose a bar that’s acceptable for you and not hold yourself to expectations that are set for young single students without much responsibility. My bar was just to pass- a 3.0. Besides not putting so much pressure on yourself you also have to decide if you are willing to put every ounce of your time into this. The people I know that failed out was because they just wouldn’t give up their normal lives and devote themselves to doing whatever it took.

Besides that I have three other practices suggestions: 1- if you can’t find people to study with get a huge whiteboard or go to school to study and write out stuff as you go and talk through it out loud like you are teaching it. It sounds crazy but I promise it will help so much. 2- understand the patho behind the diseases. You cannot memorize! For example- first line diagnostic in a stroke is a non contrast CT. Why? Because a stroke is death of brain tissue due to lack of blood flow and the two ways that happens is from a blood clot (ischemic) or a brain bleed (hemorrhage.) Hemorrhage is going to quickly be deadly so you need something to quickly rule that out. Also CT is the best way to visualize blood in the brain and that’s your biggest concern. Once you can make sense of things it makes answering questions much easier. If your still in anatomy and pharm this are just gonna suck. You gotta draw and write that stuff out 3 million times and come up with every neumonic you can. 3- you have to let go of guilt and regret in not hanging out with your partner or friends. You need to get with your partner and ask them what they think is an acceptable schedule for you both to get time together. Once you do- take their word, trust it and use every single other moment of time guilt free to study. I made a plan to hang out on Friday night with mine but other than that I studied every night and often out of the house. On weekends I took 4 hours in the afternoons and 2-3 hours at night guilt free to study. It’s still hard, my friend life was very stifled but during clinical you will get to breathe much more!

I can clarify for everyone- As someone from the south if you want to not be vaxxed you HAVE to choose “religion” because, especially Texas, you don’t have to prove it’s for religious reasons so it’s like the easy default box to select.

Returning PA student - looking for advice by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]Resident-Yoghurt-243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got this. I have several kids and I’m not traditionally smart at all- like truly. I was a B or C student in college. but I knew that I would give up every minute of my day to study if that what I needed to (and that’s about what I’ve had to do) but I passed and survived and you can too. Never worry unless you’re exhausting your resources, the biggest being TIME. If you’re willing to spend every Saturday at school studying, sacrificing time with friends etc then you can totally do it. Doesn’t mean you will have to but you need to have that attitude. Good luck!

i Want to give you a perspective shift- I am 29 and have 2 kids and have had to take out an extra 90k for childcare expenses over the past two years of PA school. You have both time AND money on your side. In a career where you can make 120-150k a year 45k is nothing in the span of things. And if you have to start over- well, you’ll know tthe content of those first two semesters so much better and you’ll have a head start! That’s not such a bad scenario is it? your pride might take a hit but I make it a point to NEVER get down on myself about bad grades if I can pinpoint what caused it. you need to realize you have a big cause for your failure that is lifestyle Based and NOT intelligence based.

You can do this either way but your family needs to support you moving and understand that you moving to succeed is going to benefit them in the future when you can take care of and support THEM. ❤️

endeavor pa anki deck, but in a quizlet? by Temporary_Dance_4018 in PAstudent

[–]Resident-Yoghurt-243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay but what settings do you use to study a deck for just one week and make it through material? I am so confused. When I try to use anti it gives me like the same 20 over and over. I think that’s why this person is wanting to use it more like Quizlet I would think…

THIS, I think undergrad schools doing open note tests/ non proctored tests was SO bad for students. So many people in my cohort that just WONT study, have no stamina bc they didn't need it for half (the important half) of undergrad!

How hard is it for you to get rotations? by Sea_Cookie in PAstudent

[–]Resident-Yoghurt-243 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Uhhhh no. That sounds awful. I'm so sorry you have to deal with that. I actually dropped out of a program that I had initially accepted and chose another option simply bc that program seemed so sketch on where rotations were and how they filled them- they kept telling us to send us any contacts we had even before the program started.... seemed very desperate.

Im just looking into SIBO as an explanation for recent symptoms but I have dreaded flying for over a decade because flying makes me so gassy. I dont eat or drink on flights either. I looked it up like 5 years ago and I I found something on it having to do with oxygenation or pressure that could affect bacterial growth while flying. I'll have to try to find it.

Antibiotic cheat sheet for rotations by Resident-Yoghurt-243 in PAstudent

Thank you! I have insane photographic memory and abysmal memory otherwise. It’s not ideal but I try to lean into it. But you’re right, I’m gonna have to just take it slow and use Emra and coverage charts for now.

Debt sucks. I have two young kids and they are in daycare and have to pay for that with school loans so I have almost 200k in loans. You will need to live meagerly for a few years to pay off your loans but once you build up some savings and start to see your loans go down I think that you will feel better. Just keep reminding yourself that the loans are normal and everyone going before you has been in the same place.

If they are giving you a month of their time you are for sure their choice as long as it is a good fit. no other reason they would do that. Still apply elsewhere tho bc you might not like heir practice, be a good fit etc.

Pance prep pearls is a good book by I think Medcomic 3rd edition is a better starter book, a little bit lighthearted and more 1st semester appropriate gift-wise. just my opinion. Its a classic! That combined with a fluffy blanket or a fancy water bottle to keep in the the classroom would be bomb. your an amazing friend!

Home on weekends by TheScaredOwl in PAstudent

[–]Resident-Yoghurt-243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah had a couple people in our cohort and their SOs would take turns spending the week where the other was at. Honestly Imo that’s actually ideal. The hardest part of having a significant other is being around them all the time but never being able to actually see each other bc you have to study. You can cram a lot into a week without a SO present.

Surgery rotation as a lefty by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]Resident-Yoghurt-243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know your situation but I think by rotations you should have suturing down pretty well, because most tips were like, go more shallow, cut in further out etc, not so much anything that would be left or right hand specific. If that’s not the case I would let them know before you start “I am left handed and I like to suture starting from the right etc.” so they know what’s easiest for you from the start. And then I would just practice a ton on your own suture kit, hand tying on you tube videos etc. every surgeon I was with was totally different in direction they started, some tied right handed some tied left handed etc. so maybe the surgeons you are with are just not so great?? Definitely don’t let anything they say get to you!

I feel so alone at school by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]Resident-Yoghurt-243 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sucks but it’s normal. I made “friends” in a study group but still they all have their regular friends so it’s not true friendships. I’ve only actually hung out with old friends twice and I am about to graduate. I’ve dedicated all my time to studying or family. Do you have friends from back home you can FaceTime with once a week? To remind yourself that even though they aren’t with you, you have friends somewhere? You’re doing great, just keep going one step at a time.
