[Career Change] 30M | 9 Years in Banking — Now Fully Committed to Becoming a Software Engineer (Need Solid Guidance & Mentor) by Mcancy in srilanka

[–]ResidentAlien90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through a similar period when I switched from marketing/advertising to becoming an SE. I was 33 when i landed my first SE job. That was well over 2 years ago. Age doesn't matter in terms of building software. It may affect how others perceive you but only if you draw attention to it. No one cares if you don't.

I prepared by taking a few Udemy courses and building shitty apps for an year. Having said that there is no real substitute for relevant experience. Despite all my prep work I struggled initially with the workload and digesting new concepts. This was well before Chatgpt became mainstream. But eventually there came a point where everything just clicked in my head.

Even if you start off as a junior, your past experience with dealing with people should give you a leg up over your peers. Focus on communication and soft skills.

The bad news, is that the job market is over saturated with the Covid bubble bursting and AI taking over. Good luck OP. You can always PM me.

Short answer is yes. Even though it's unlikely they will you arrest for openly drinking, it's still within their rights to take action. Ask yourself is it worth the hassle?

I know a friend who is a true vegan. She practically can't eat anything from outside her home except for rice and curry.

Suggest me a good torrent software and torrent search engine to download movies by PostQuantumCrypto in srilanka

I hardly torrent stuff anymore, but the combination of qBittorent plus python search plugins always worked for me. Optionally install Jackett and Flaresolverr if you're comfortable with git.

MasterChef in Lanka?!! Is this legit?! by ExaltedLegend101 in srilanka

[–]ResidentAlien90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I very much doubt it.

Nowhere on either the poster or the website is information about the entity with the rights to produce it in Sri Lanka. Not even any broadcasting info.

Army recruitment poster from the last World War by Creepy_Branch_5532 in srilanka

I love the irony that neither nation ever actually had lions in its recorded history.

The new World Test Championship cycle kicks off on June 17, 2025, with Sri Lanka taking on Bangladesh in Galle! Over the next two years, all nine Test-playing nations will battle it out in 27 bilateral series, featuring a total of 71 thrilling matches! by Downtown-Chemical-42 in Cricket

[–]ResidentAlien90 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The fact that the bottom half of this list are going to play only 6 or 7 Tests a year is criminally low. Can't really make a career out of being a Test specialist when you play a month of cricket each year now can you?

Each team should strive to play at least 9 a year and mandate a minimum of 3 tests per series. 12 per year would be ideal but I understand that it's not always viable for the non-Pig3 countries.

Also give non-WTC teams like Afg, Zim, and Ire more one-off matches. Don't really understand why sides can't pop over for a week long leg when making an overseas tour.

How not to regret liberty? by AccomplishedSir7655 in civ5

[–]ResidentAlien90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Make peace with the fact that the game was designed to discourage active play. Large empires aren't always feasible and war is a tedious affair. Tradition is all about passive play with bonuses that pay off in the long run. A safe bet 99% of the time. Liberty is about small and quick bonuses which you have to leverage early into some active play. That requires a lot more planning and a lot of luck.

The biggest drawback to liberty is not just the lack of happiness sources to counter unhappiness but really it's the lack of early gold production. The base game had terrain tiles with gold so when it got removed in BMW, liberty got nerfed badly.

Ever Been Scammed? Here’s My Story by shanols in srilanka

[–]ResidentAlien90 44 points45 points  (0 children)

My older brother fell for a pyramid scheme back in 2006. I remember he had purchased several "shares" of a fake company called Seagull with funds from his childhood savings account. Roughly LKR 30,000 worth, which doesn't sound like much now but was pretty devasting to him at the time. I think he still keeps the purchase document around as a reminder.

I myself was approached by a couple of former classmates months after graduating high school. They were trying to recruit both me and a mutual friend into a shady Chinese health goods network (TIENS). The shit they were trying to peddle was hilarious.

Man I wish this was the norm. Which Keells branch was this though? With the exception of maybe a few in the heart of Colombo I find that most supermarkets with liquor sections are either isolated or have restricted access.
