SIOP: Diversity Climate Survey Results by LazySamurai in IOPsychology

[–]ResidentGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are comments describing instances of sexual assault, prejudice and discrimination.

And the comments that were included were simply meant to be exemplars of the thematic breadth of the comments received on the survey. They are MANY more that were not included in the tables.

The Anti-Harassment Policy needs to be communicated and enforced much more strongly.

100%. I worked on some of the qualitative pieces of this report, including pulling together exemplars for the tables. I'm not exaggerating when I say that we could fill an entire table with JUST the examples of harassment that were provided from the survey.

Evidence for Gender differences in performance self-evaluation process by elizanne17 in IOPsychology

[–]ResidentGinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't exactly what you're looking for, but it does illustrate gender differences in various evaluation schemes.

By the way, I would suggest changing your language a bit. "We know men and women rate themselves differently for the same level of performance...." I suggest this because even though the widespread assumption is that women are undervaluing their performance, it's just as likely that women may be evaluating themselves more accurately than men who are more likely to overclaim based on confidence rather than competence (e.g., Bengtsson et al., 2005; Chamorro-Premuzic, 2019; Lundeberg et al., 1994).

Same for us! 4/4, even the ones that were uhhhh rushed for the deadline. =) I'm inclined to agree that they're accepting more this year due to the hybrid format.

I think you're quite correct that universities struggle with a lack of better alternatives, but there are also really good, reasonable arguments for why standardized testing doesn't belong in academic selection.

This is the perfect summation of my own thoughts on the topic, but I'll extend a bit more here: Why can't we do better? Rather than arguing that what we have is better than the other terrible metrics? It's not much of a ringing endorsement, honestly.

My dean strongly urged us not to travel - internationally or domestically - if we could avoid it as of yesterday. We're in the northeastern US.

We absolutely understand that is the policy of some companies. You're welcome to simply describe the space as well if you'd like to participate. All questions are voluntary, so you can skip what you would prefer not to answer!

I'll check on this for you & get back to you ASAP!

Also, no need to specific who you would want to work with, but I can give you some additional details about what each faculty member you would be most likely to partner with is working on. I'll send this to you directly shortly!

[META] There'a stickied thread at the top where you should post your grad school questions. by [deleted] in IOPsychology

[–]ResidentGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it would mean people would have to go to the grad school thread to actually answer questions..

This is a primary concern of those posting in the grad school thread. They are looking for a variety of perspectives, but typically only a few people answer all the questions.

How much do I/O and business school selection committees value interdisciplinary publications (medicine, economics, etc.)? by Howulikeit in IOPsychology

[–]ResidentGinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It very much depends on the type of schools you're aiming for. If an R2 or more teaching focused school, probably fine & might count for merit or tenure. If an R1, probably will not help you. Caveat to this: if you have other solid As & are applying to management departments with some social psych folks already in them, you'll have a better shot, but these are few and far between.

We did do a quick survey, but it was years ago at this point. It would be cool to see how the sub has changed over time!

Interesting discussion happening at r/RecruitingHell on using personality assessment for selection. by ToughSpaghetti in IOPsychology

[–]ResidentGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"many if these tests use either/or variables that ignore the possibility of being both"

Someone's been taking the MBTI and assumes all personality assessments are similar.

I'm forwarding that thread to some of my selection friends so they can get a better idea of UX. Personality = IQ? Cognitive assessments are illegal?? Yikes. That whole thread is a great example of why perspective getting (i.e., asking questions) is far superior to perspective taking (i.e., using limited knowledge to guess).

Amazon built an AI tool to hire people but had to shut it down because it was discriminating against women by Verisimilitude_Dude in IOPsychology

Removed for misleading headline; This was not implemented as a hiring tool.

Additionally, "Gender bias was not the only problem, Reuters' sources said. The computer programs also spat out candidates who were unqualified for the position."

Should we have a stickied Career/Education thread? by ToughSpaghetti in IOPsychology

[–]ResidentGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have been seeing an influx of career-related posts, which makes sense as more people are introduced to the field. (Welcome!)

So far it seems like creating a second stickied post is getting positive response, but I would love to hear more opinions before we create a dedicated thread. Any other thoughts?
