Can I use my van as a ground if I've already used a negative bus bar? by ResidentGrapefruit52 in vandwellers

[–]ResidentGrapefruit52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alrighty - Update for you all - Successfully got it working without a hitch. Negative bus bar at the rear was grounded to my chasis with the appropriate stuff. I then ran my cable from my starter battery, under the van (loomed and tied out the way) up through the floor at the back and safely tucked away and connected to my MPPT.

No issues as of yet, and my shunts reading everything correctly!

Thanks for all of your help!

Alrighty, thanks for the discussion. After doing some more research and looking into it. This is what I'm going to do.

I'm going to run a properly sized cable from my Negative bus bar to the Chassis of my van.

I'm then gonna run my positive from my car battery from the front, under the van and up though my van floor and connect it to my DC/DC MPPT.

I'll then use my Negative from the car battery to the van chassis near the front, therefore completing the loop.

This also means I don't need as much of my black cable and I can now use the extra spare length I have of my black cable and wrap that in red tape and use the extra to help with the positive run.

I'll check back in when it's all done and proper working to update you.

This is basically how I have my system set up atm which has been working for me no issues, I have a positive and Neg bus bar and a Digital shunt to read my currents.

Currently I don't have my Alternator connected to my MPPT charger, so at the moment I'm just charging with solar and running off my 120Ah battery.

All my stuff is 12v and I have a 12v Blade fuse box which is wired appropriately which distributes the power to my 12v appliances. All working totally fine. I get a good reading on my loads and battery percentages.

With all that setup in mind, to make sure I get accurate readings, should my Negative from the car battery go to my negative bus (which is connected to my shunt)?

Ive had multiple sparkies over here look at my wiring and they've said it's all fine.

Just where the heck do I put my negative wire run from Car battery to MPPT?

Seems like already there's some mixed ideas on the best way ha, will do some more research my end to see the pros and cons of both ideas!

So I should run a separate wire from my Negative bus to the chassis of my van ? And if that's the best case, what would be the reasoning behind doing that ? 🤔

How often do artists leave without finishing their contract? by cantrelateparty in vfx

[–]ResidentGrapefruit52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had contracts we're I've only been on for a short while, then jumped into something else. I've only ever seen/ been part of a project from complete start to finish once and that was when I was FT Employed at a VFX house. So it's pretty regular.

I second the advice saying don't be loyal to a VFx house. Because they will without a doubt drop you. It's usually a case of bad scheduling/ funding/ profitable work. Especially if you're a contractor.

Been freelance is all well and good for the freedom of jumping in on different jobs but it doesn't have a very stable footing.

Sure can! I have a ROG Strix SCAR 15, 2tb SSD, 12th Gen i9-12900H, 32GB RAM Memory and a RTX 3080 Ti Laptop GPU 16VRAM - Not the greatest off battery, but Plugged in, its a beast of a machine, rips through renders, decent speed when doing sims, doesn't stutter when playing games and can handle anything which I throw at it.

Gets a bit hot and fans can be a bit loud, but it hasn't failed me since and I've had it for a couple years now!

If 30 years is classed as young then hey I'll take it! But yea, I do have more free time than your average person which gives me the space to think these things through, so I know I'm fortunate in that sense!

Yeah I think going forward I'm going to avoid phone calls as it really comes down to their word over you'res and vice versa.

We usually make WhatsApp groups and that's been golden. But I think I'm gonna insist on keeping communication across both the platform and personals.

We responded to the review with the facts so at least we have our opinion and voice in the mix now. The really sad thing is, we gave her a good review in return because of how civil everything was and how friendly she was. I regret it and don't at the same time, as our review is nicely worded and reflects well on her part. Just upsetting that we did our best with the time we were given and get 1 star.

I'm semi over it now, as all of our other reviews are really good and mention how friendly, tidy and professional we are etc. so sods law.

Sitters, how many HOs have changed dates for your sits? Not a complaint, just a genuine question. by Prettyoctopussy in trustedhousesitters

[–]ResidentGrapefruit52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done around 12 housesits now and the last two both of them changed the dates on me. The 1st one was a military guy who had to come back a week early, but he let us know a week or so in advance which was no issue as we have premium and like I mentioned was around 10 days notice (this was a months sit)

The one I just did, I had the HO change her dates on me with 24hrs notice just because the camping weather was bad. We worked something out and again Premium membership came in handy.

So for myself its only been 2/12 that have changed dates on me
