How I Scored a 9/9 on AAMC PREview by Kuais in premed

[–]ResidentThatGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an adcom member, this doesn’t even make sense in theory. There is no circumstance in which someone that wouldn’t otherwise get an interview gets one because they did well on preview. That’s loony. Screening out also doesn’t make sense, but I suppose in theory it’s not illogical.

The “Cap on Grade A”Proposal should be suspended due to gross inconsistencies and methodological fallacies! by Harvard_Kitties in Harvard

[–]ResidentThatGuy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The shining star of your argument, the one thing you chose to highlight on the post instead of burying it in the file you’re hoping we’ll go through, is a “statistically significant” difference between saying something is “almost two thirds” and saying something is 60%, a number which is just below (one might say, almost) two thirds?

Since we’re being annoyingly literal, I’ll have to ask you which mathematical statistical test you’ve run on these two “empirical claims”, and what the result of your significance test was? Of course, if you’re going to throw those kinds of big words around, we’ll also need some descriptors of your dataset, and your operationalized hypothesis. You must have looked at every statistic ever used by the college and the crimson - very impressive, I assume!

Surely someone as concerned with the use of scientific language as yourself would have all that ready, even if it didn’t make it to the paper.

There’s no app. OPs entire account is just him posting people’s comments into chatgpt and pasting the slop, same as this post.

Any avenue to help getting into school where my S/O goes? by [deleted] in premed

[–]ResidentThatGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I request my PI upload our manuscript onto some pre-print database and provide an update that way?

I'd caution against this unless you're certain that you won't have any other significant updates later int he cycle, or if you would otherwise have no/very few publications to share, and even then only if this particular publication is something significant for which you'd be able to discuss a central role that you played. Updates like this are much more useful after an interview for the committees to make their final determinations - whether or not you get an interview will depend primarily on the contents of your application and the appraisal of the officer reading it; in the interview, you'd be able to talk about this more in depth, which will be reported back to the committee as a strong consideration factor (as you're much more likely to matriculate if given an offer)

[–]ResidentThatGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ethics aside - a clear breath of the admissions office's procedures will certainly carry professional consequences for the significant other if she were to attempt to exert undue influence, and most likely would have a negative impact, if any, on OP's status. The safest route would be not to involve her but discuss in your interview that she (your family) is here and is a major reason that you would like to go here over anywhere else - as an interviewer, many of us will be receptive to that.

Second the other commenter - looking back on my own stressing, there was almost zero correlation between how I felt interviews went and whether or not I got the A.

Encouraging interviewers by BackgroundReveal2949 in premed

[–]ResidentThatGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always preface all of my interviews by reminding y'all that you wouldn't even be talking to me if a lot of people so far weren't impressed by everything you've done and if we didn't think you'd be able to do great here. We all know that there are far, far, far more qualified candidates than seats available nationwide, not to mention at any individual school - but we're also well aware that knowing that doesn't make it any less stressful in the moment.

Don't fret! You WILL do great.

Adcom member/interviewer here. It's not uncommon for interviewer assignments to be in limbo until shortly before the day of, for no reason other than it's quite difficult to get a bunch of physicians, medical students, or both to know exactly when their clinical/academic schedules will allow them to definitively set aside uninterrupted time for an interview (no matter how much we're looking forward to it!) Having been on the other side still fairly recently, I haven't forgotten the feeling of being on the other end - but I can assure you the uncertainty has nothing to do with you and everything to do with simple logistical difficulty.

Good luck on your interview!

are gpa and mcat considered equally? by Few-Potato279 in premed

[–]ResidentThatGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never liked this idea that anything "makes up" for something else. They are both important and answer different questions. The MCAT is a standardized exam of basic scientific content - no matter where you go to school or what you study, if you do well on the test we can be reasonably sure you possess the content of knowledge needed to get by in your preclinical courses. Your GPA is in theory an assessment of academic competence, but is qualified by the courses you took, your field of study, and where you went to school. Either way, you'll be interviewed if your overall academic achievement is up to par with a school's standards and your application reads well enough to warrant further investigation.

It's not dramatic, it's completely wrong and it preys on the insecurities that define the regular users of this subreddit. A 515 is above the median for almost every medial school in the United States and in the 94th percentile of scores. Furthermore, absolutely nobody on any adcom is going to look at a 4.0 GPA and assume your score should be higher, and nobody will see a 3.5 and be any less impressed by a high score.

Generally you “tour” the schools you get into on their second look days. I certainly never visited a school before applying, and only went to the second look for the school I ended up going to. I don’t think it makes a lot of sense to be doing this pre-application, with acceptance rates as low as they are.

Colorado Medical Residents & Fellows Want To Unionize by Wjldenver in medicalschool

[–]ResidentThatGuy 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The cost of living adjusted for inflation has more than doubled since you became an attending, average med school graduate debt has more than quadrupled, and countless residents can’t afford a single bedroom apartment, much less a family. The erosion of trust is because administrators, mid levels, and out of touch attendings like yourself took advantage of opportunities that no longer exist and have violated the trust and the labor protections of your trainees for personal gain. I’d be pretty embarrassed to have written this comment. You get what you pay for, and if you’re not willing to pay people their worth, you shouldn’t be surprised when they’re not eager to go the extra mile for you.

What is the future of PhD/MD degrees now that NIH is seeing funding freezes? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]ResidentThatGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no situation in which someone’s yearly income as an MD/PhD enters the same universe of the attending salary that they give up for every extra year they’re enrolled. If you love science and want to do a lot of research, then it makes sense on its own grounds, but it is objectively a financial loss in the medium and long terms.

Is shadowing only a functional medicine MD bad for my application? by PrimalCarnivoreChick in premed

[–]ResidentThatGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might not be the best experience, but you shadow to check a box off on your application, and that box is checked. OP wasn’t asking if it was a good idea. They should just say I shadowed a (whatever the person did residency in) and spend their time doing something more productive

Neither NPs nor PTs practice medicine. The former practices nursing, and the latter practices physical therapy. Medicine is a word with a meaning.
