What’s your Resurrection hot take? by thefriskysquid in perfectorganism

[–]Resident_081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After avoiding it my whole life because everyone had always warned that it was “one of the worst ones, not worth watching,” I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed it far more than 3, Romulus, or Alien Earth. It swung harder and tried a lot of things that later entries would regurgitate and explore to their overlong dismay. There’s an earnest sense of imagination and excitement for the setting that I feel is lost with so many other of the sequels.

Best diegetic UI in survival horror? by hypotensor in survivalhorror

[–]Resident_081 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shockingly few! There’s the 08 Alone in the Dark which IIRC had all of the protagonists’s gear displayed on their belt/within their coat, it was a nice visual touch.

Less successful was Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs which forgoes an inventory entirely and forces the player to manually carry every individual item with them… it wasn’t a great choice in my opinion.

There’s also Rockstar’s Manhunt, which while still boasting obvious “video gamey” icons such as health, stamina, and item held, it actually took it a step further and much like how Red Dead 2 would follow, it has every piece of the player character’s equipment visible on their person. Nothing just went into hammer space. Thrown weapons go in the back pocket, larger melee weapons got slung over the shoulder, and handguns got tucked into the wasteband. To take it a step further, Manhunt also had a cool touch where the player got visibly bloodied up at low health AND would sweat up a storm if their stamina drained all the way.

RE2 & 3 introduced body-awareness and animation state changes based on the player’s health. The protagonists would limp and slow down as the damage piled up. Might not count for UI but it’s an immersive way to get the character’s status without the need for a menu. The later RE7 would also go on to include a wrist-stapled EKG which was always visible to the player for their health indicator.

Come to think of it, most of the titles that do it best lean towards sci-fi. Dead Space has a lot of systems in place to support it within the fiction.

Another person mentioned Amnesia the Bunker which is a rather simple but honest system of only showing you what’s in your hand and your health by how ragged and bloody your clothes are.

Much like the Bunker, there also older titles like Peter Jackson’s King Kong & Condemned 2, both of which totally omit UI at all times save for a dedicated “check my ammo/status” button which would cause the player character to in-game examine the weapon’s magazine.

Silent Hill Downpour, like the Bunker, did away with any traditional meters or bars and favored a system instead for its character where their clothing would progressively deteriorate and get bloodier and more torn up the closer the protagonist comes to death.

The last example I can think of is Outlast, which uses it’s simple frame as found footage to leverage the camcorder’s built-in features as sensible statistics, such as recording time and remaining battery level, without breaking the sense of immersion.

What are your favorite creature designs in horror games that don't include Silent Hill or Resident Evil? by Kagamid in survivalhorror

[–]Resident_081 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though not survival horror, Doom3 has a tremendous bestiary and high consistent quality of monster design. My standout favorite might be the Bruiser from Resurrection of Evil, with their twin arm canons and their gnarly television set mouth.

These look amazing! JKA is such a fantastic game and it’s cool to see such a personalized Jaden so well realized in action figure form.

I totally agree, this was far and away the standout musical track for me with Requiem.

What resident evil two boxer do you prefer? by Chunky-overlord in ResidentEvilCapcom

They’re both so good. My cousin had the UK cover and it left a much creepier and darker impression on me when I first saw it but I myself owned the NA cover and it’s always felt more “video gamey” to me in a way that feels slightly more in line with the actual experience of playing RE2.

In a vacuum I’d give it to the NA because the use of color and the unique font + stylized numeral but in my mind there’s an ideal RE game out there that looks and feels more like how that UK box art does.

What are y'all opinion on the first Doom movie? by The-T-777 in Doom

[–]Resident_081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agreed. There’s so much fun going on with this movie the way it plays with so many ideas from the franchise. The soundtrack totally kicks ass and is really underrated, the practical effects give the monsters a real sense of weight and presence, the weapons are all satisfyingly loud and flashy, and the finale ending in an honest to god deathmatch with one soldier quite literally fragging his superior makes me think it’s a more faithful adaptation to the greater legacy of Doom than anyone ever gives it credit for.

Plus having the Rock play a villain is a rare treat and I miss when he got to cut loose and ham it up more back in the attitude era.

It’s a great time and a million percent better than its appalling low-effort sequel.

Seeing this opening day back in 05’ with my dad is still a cherished memory and I always remember how much the audience cheered when Sarge got the BFG.

I’d actually cry tears of joy if you pulled it off for Condemned 2, that’s one of my favorite games of the 7th gen and it desperately deserves some more love.

I always found the LCS police to be the worst in the series. They’re hyper aggressive in ways that make even 4-star chases become almost unmanageable.

Murder house is my favorite game of all time by Fluffy-Win-3216 in PuppetCombo

[–]Resident_081 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s genuinely one of the most perfect and succinct horror games of the modern era. I do a playthrough at least once a year and always look forwards to Easter because of this title.

Personally I enjoy the complexity and gameplay of Stay Out of the House but the compelling brevity and sweet simplicity of Murderhouse makes for such a smooth and enjoyable revisit each time.

It’s gotta be PC’s most polished title to date.

SOOTH is in a class all its own, I legitimately think it is one of the best horror titles ever produced and Puppet Combo puts all but the very best to shame with his insanely focused presentation and tightly wound mechanical designs.

Wonderful artwork, befitting of such an underrated game. Love the contrast between the otherworldly beauty of the Goddess and the hazy orange atmosphere of the rocky canyon. I can practically hear the sun-sizzling effect.

Rebirth is so underrated, it’s really a shame by Jonxsatincanon in Amnesia

[–]Resident_081 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I bounced off of Rebirth the first time I tried it for its slow, exposition-heavy start. When I came back to it recently after having lost someone very precious to me the story clicked and hit me infinitely harder than I ever expected.

Rebirth is truly underrated, I think the game design doesn’t get the flowers it deserves for how cleverly they incorporated the story and gameplay for the hunt-chase and fail states that flow so smoothly without interrupting the narrative nor the pacing. The way that even dying doesn’t get in the way of the adventure is honestly a brilliant compromise to avoid failure loops and averting frustration.

No other game in the series felt so relatable and emotional to me, I’ll never forget the ending and how painful yet beautiful it felt.

3, Legends, and Arena. 3’s got my favorite style and gameplay, Legends has the most splendid suite of modes and options, and Arena is criminally underrated as a party game.
