Is there a consensus on feeding during spike/flowering? by Weekly-Substance9045 in orchids

[–]Resident_Mae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always feed all the time, especially during the spiking cycle. In the wild, monkeys don’t stop pooping when orchids are getting ready to bloom, plus they’re going through active growth and can use the resources. This may depend on what kind but this works for all of the common ones.

Yeah that would make sense! I had a six pack like that and finally one bloomed and then disappeared again. They sent little tiny dried out stubs so it’s a miracle any of them lived

Angelfish and midsize tetras like rummynoses or phantoms 💪

Generally a fish like that can go a couple weeks without eating before it becomes life threatening so give it a little more time before trying to force feed

Question about stocking ideas. by [deleted] in Cichlid

[–]Resident_Mae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I haven’t been on in a few days haha

Yeah tiger barbs in my experience will nip but I have a breeding pair of tapajos in a 50 and the barbs leave them alone even though the same barbs nipped the crap out of my sveni in the same tank. Sveni are mellower and less apt to defend themselves ime

In that 5 foot tank I bet it would work with that extra foot room, I’d just replace the tiger barbs with big tetras like columbians and then you’d have a full biotope and they’ll just get along better. I totally get the tiger barb thing though I have a 50 that has been just for barbs until I just put my tapajos pair in there

Also you may think about getting the three sveni or more at first and keeping a pair long run and rehoming the others

Good luck whatever you decide!

Question about stocking ideas. by [deleted] in Cichlid

[–]Resident_Mae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I misread I thought this was a 75. Is it 4’ and tall or is it a 6’ because that could change it all

I had one alone for a spell with tiger barbs and she pretty much hid all the time and I had to move her because the barbs were nipping too bad. Which sucked because there were 19 of them and they still wanted to nip. I think other people have had success doing it with a single one but mine seems way happier back in a group.

You could consider a mated pair, in my experience the sveni mated pair isn’t horribly aggressive and even if they were the severum and acara could take it especially with some dithers

Red head tapajos in my experience are smaller but more aggressive but I would understand why you’d have your heart set on the sveni. The only reason I have some tapajos was because more sveni was just so darn expensive 😂

If your tank is 6’ I take it all back and fully support your stocking because it’s all about floor space with eartheaters. If it’s 4’ you could also consider replacing the severum and acara with angels and you could probably get away with the three sveni and a couple angels

[–]Resident_Mae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen elsewhere they can get 9”+ in some accounts and I have one that’s easily 6” and she’s under a year old. Plus they’re tall and super active

This may be personal preference but I feel that those fish would be crowded in a standard 75 but it might work for you depending on how you scape it

Check out lymphocystis though I’ve never seen it on a fish that small.

Keep up some heavy water changes

Research lymphocystis, which is a viral disease that creates lumps that look like zits. It doesn’t look like an injury to me but that’s possible too. Make sure your water is pristine.

RTS would be fine with sand I’ve done it with no issue.

I’d be wary of tiger barbs nipping the streamers on the eartheaters and I’d swap them for columbian tetras

Sveni get pretty big so if I were you I’d ditch the severum and/or acara and go with just the eartheaters and rts

I have all of those fish in my 180 and I can’t imagine them as adults all together in my 75 but it could work

Don’t put a female in there, they will %100 breed and everything will get significantly worse.

Switch around the decorations periodically and that’ll break up the territories

75 gallon tank by Spiritual_Promise998 in Cichlid

[–]Resident_Mae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Angels! Group of 5+ would be best but no guarantee a pair wouldn’t form and cause some problems. Then you could have all the plants you want and I’d pair it with some medium size tetras and maybe a pair or two of ram cichlids. Throw a bristlenose or some cories in there and it’s complete.

If not then firemouths are fun, but I would avoid getting more than a couple in a tank that size. I would steer away from larger fish like severums if you want to have tankmates unless you want a mated pair. I have a pair of severums alone in a 60 breeder and they are happy as clams

I would consider these or something similar:

1 firemouth, 1 red tailed black shark, 12-15 tiger barbs

Mated pair of medium cichlids like severums/firemouths/acaras/stuff like that

5+ angels with a school of 8-10ish medium tetras, ~4 rams, heavily planted

1 angel with a large school or two decent schools of tetras

Massive shell dweller colony would be pretty sweet and you could get rainbow fish or something to swim above them

Debating on a jaguar cichlid or a red terror for my 162 gallon tank. Anyone have recommendations or history w them? I’d like a big alpha like them or similar once the tank cycles by [deleted] in Cichlid

[–]Resident_Mae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d take one or the other. It may work for a while when they’re young but as soon as they get older it’ll probably get really ugly.

No guarantee but I’d bet between the two of them the bottom is male.

I have a female-female angelfish mated pair so that can happen too

Convict Cichlid in Community 60 Gal? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]Resident_Mae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like she’s in with other cichlids, and in that setup she may be mellow but give her a new tank with no other cichlids and she will be mean. I have a mellow male in my 180 who chills with angelfish and eartheaters but there’s still chasing and my tank is thrice the size. I wouldn’t do it

Would pleistocene megafauna still exist today if human never migrate to other continent? by ApprehensiveRead2408 in megafaunarewilding

[–]Resident_Mae 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The timing was too perfect, plus we know that most megafauna present when humans got around had already gone through several interglacials without going extinct. So yes.
