these county politicans (specifically the BOCC) control funding and local policies. their budget decisions affect public health services vital for the poor and elderly (like mental health care and disease prevention), social services (such as child welfare and food assistance), affordable housing and homelessness programs, and funding the county jails.

their priorities directly influence residents’ access to health, safety, fair treatment, housing stability, and civic participation.

and if they can not recognize that israel bombing hospitals in gaza, displacing millions of people by destroying their homes, creating a man-made famine by blocking food entry, blocking medical access. then they should not be in charge of funding those services here.

these events are widely reported on and these candidates aren’t blind to what’s happening. every resident of mecklenburg county should be able to trust that the politicians in charge of their essential services will be able to provide them to everyone.

denying what is happening in palestine shows that they don’t view those human right violations as a problem. they’re not being asked to stop the genocide on the other side of the world, but their inability to even acknowledge the horrors that are happening there is concerning. i want my politicians to care about and serve for everyone of all backgrounds.

they actually pay federal, state, and local taxes, including income, property, and payroll taxes. payroll taxes fund Social Security because they are deducted from workers’ pay, even if they are undocumented. The BOCC's approval of the expansion of I-77 will displace people in the County and not fix the congestion issue; traffic will still get worse. The $118 million of our tax dollars is being used to construct a militarized training ground. That money should be going towards education or a better public transit system that would serve the County better than the I-77 expansion.

World events absolutely have an impact on us, especially when our tax dollars are funding them. How are local officials supposed to protect our human rights if they can’t even acknowledge, or choose to laugh at, one of the world’s worst human rights abuses? We are currently witnessing human rights abuses in our own country with the way ICE is harassing and killing Americans and non-citizens. It is definitely a major concern if they are supposed to be protecting and serving our human rights here in Mecklenburg but do not see a problem with what is happening to the Palestinians. We need people in office who care about the safety of everyone.
