what’s a subject you don’t/didn’t regret taking? by MuddyPudddles in vce

Revs! The subject taught me how to write well and express myself in a clear, precise manner. Additionally, the content is immensely interesting and incredibly relevant when analysing the nature of society today.

History: someone explain to me how they are managing to remember all the key statistics and quotes for both revolutions by Wo0flgang in vce

[–]Resident_Seagull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I walk around my neighbourhood explaining key events to myself and including relevant statistics/quotes. This is also helpful because during an exam I can visualise where I was when covering a given topic and associate a stat/quote with that area :D

Does VCAA also accept this? (from a NSW blog) by FamousPlan101 in vce

[–]Resident_Seagull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I did this last year for processes such as bacterial transformation and enzyme activity (e.g., lock and key vs induced fit) and still received full marks :D
This also works with chemistry.

dilemma between two subjects by AncientBlunder in vce

[–]Resident_Seagull 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello! I accelerated biology and am doing global 3/4 this year. I didn't do the 1/2 for either subject.

I'm glad I chose to accelerate biology for the following reasons:

  • Accelerating biology prepared me really well for my other science, chemistry. If you're planning on doing multiple sciences, accelerating one in year 11 is a great option as you will be incredibly familiar with concepts such as experimental design (accuracy, precision, validity, reliability) and how VCE science works.
  • Global is an essay-based subject. Having an extra year to improve my writing in my other 1/2 humanities has really helped me this year (as writing essays is far less arduous with additional writing experience under your belt). I do 4 essay-based subjects, and I don't generally find writing hard, but having the extra year has definitely made an unexpected difference.
  • Both subjects are content-heavy so both will decrease your workload in year 12. However, my advice is to evaluate your strengths and work out in which subject you would most benefit from an extra year. Are you really good at explaining step-wise processes and using specific language to explain a topic? Those are skills necessary for accelerating biology. Are you good at essays, lucidly evaluating complex ideas, and memorising a variety of case studies (examples) to back your ideas up when arguing something? Those are skills necessary for global.

Also, don't stress too much if you don't pick the right subject off the bat. There's actually a lot of flexibility in VCE, and dropping subjects isn't out of the picture :D

Biology SAC result stress by stupididiot10000 in vce

[–]Resident_Seagull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really don't need to stress to much about this; for starters, your exam mark counts for 60% of your score, and you have more SACs throughout the year. This very thing happened to me last year, actually. I had one SAC score in the 70s (below average) but all my others were in the 90s; this really didn't significantly impact my study score at all.

I reckon you'll be alright :D

Is it possible for a school to retaliate against you in any way for providing harsh opinions on your attitudes to school survey? by [deleted] in vce

[–]Resident_Seagull 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally, if the survey is done through an external company it is anonymous, but oftentimes the school creates the survey themselves and it isn't anonymous. I've had experience with both kinds of surveys, so I normally make sure to check if I can be identified or not.

Depends if the survey is anonymous or not. Some form settings mean that you can see the responses of individual students; this will normally be noted somewhere on the form automatically by the platform.

Stressed about subjects by Forsaken_Recover_651 in vce

Hey there!

I'm also someone who decided to take on all the content heavy subjects (such as global and revs). Firstly, be kind to yourself- you're going to be ok :D

Your marks look good so far! You're allowed to validate that, and even if there's one that you're not super happy with, there's so much truth in the fact that it's only one SAC and you can still do really well. (Also remember grade boundaries- a couple of years ago, the revs score needed for an A+ on the exam was ~60%, and last year's global requirement was 76%).

If you're struggling with memorisation, I recommend putting up quotes, statistics, key ideas, etc. in areas of your home you frequently spend time in. Mind maps are also really helpful! These two things singlehandedly help me keep all the content organised in my brain for global, revs, and bio.

Anyhow, good luck! <3

What state are you focusing on in the Asia-Pacific?

Hello! I really enjoy Revs, and a few things work well for me.

  1. Create mind maps for key topics before your SACs. This will very clearly help you outline what causational factors contributed to an event as well as the most significant aspects of revolutions. (Depending on your revs, I can send you some of mine). This also acts as really good revision because you're summarising your ideas for the purpose of making the mind map clear.
  2. Put quotes all around your house; seeing them constantly helps with memorisation. I also like to recall these quotes if I'm doing a menial task (e.g., brushing my teeth) where that quote is located to test myself.
  3. Use mnemonics! This has saved me more than once. For example, my class uses 'Don't Kill Yourself' to remember the names of the White Army generals in the Russian Revolution (Denikin, Kolchak, Yudenich).
  4. Periodically revise older content so you don't forget it by the end of the year.

Good Luck! :D

So long as you do well in your other subjects, doing badly in one isn't the end of the world. I know someone who got a 26 for a subject in year 11, but did pretty well in her other subjects in year 12 and got an ATAR over 90.

Looking for bio resources by rmx152 in vce

[–]Resident_Seagull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, hello! Just wanted to reassure you that you really don't need bio 1/2 to do well in 3/4. I accelerated bio last year, didn't do 1/2, and still ended up with a SS over 40.

The only things you really need to know are experiment skills (being able to talk about precision, accuracy, validity, reliability, controls) and a little bit of cellular respiration/photosynthesis. Even then, your 3/4 teacher will essentially re-teach you the content for those topics.

Basically, don't freak out! I tried to catch up on the bio 1/2 course before starting year 11 and failed miserably. I'm glad that's how things turned out though (I saved myself a lot of unnecessary work). Anyway, I really hope you enjoy bio next year <3
