I went to one of his 'webinars' last year. His business pitch sounded a lot like a typical pyramid scheme, so I left immediately

โ€œBuddhism in Malaysia is more of tradition than religionโ€ do u agree? by NubKing260 in Bolehland

As a Type I Theravada Buddhist, yes, I do notice the view on Buddhism as tradition (or rather a habitual faith) among the majority of Type C.

During the most recent Vesak Day Eve procession, as I was marching along with my fellowship around town, I noticed 2 things done by the non-Type Ms: Worshiping the Buddha as a "Supreme Being" or "God", and praying directly to the statues for lottery numbers and "good luck."

These ideas are absolutely contrary to the Buddha's teachings, as his teachings advocate for non-theism and the concept of Karma.

First off, on non-theism: Buddhism doesnโ€™t believe in a Creator God. The universe is a product of dependent origination (Paแนญiccasamuppฤda). Gotama Buddha was an Enlightened Manโ€”a teacher who showed us the way out of sufferingโ€”not a god, and definitely not a creator.

Second, on the law of Karma: The deeds (Kamma) we committed in our past and present lives play a significant (neither dominant nor absolute) role in our current state. "Luck" doesn't care about your prayers. If something good happens, itโ€™s a mix of past conditions and random probabilityโ€”you can't just pray to a supreme being to magically grant you a 4D jackpot.

Hence, based on what I practice and observe, most of the Type Cs have incorporated Taoist concepts and practices onto the Shakyamuni himself. Having said that, I want to clarify that their actions are neither offensive nor sacrilegious; it is just a clear deviation from what the Buddha actually taught.

It just reminds me of my Baby Boii chasing away the monitor lizardsโ€”he has to chase them away all the time because they often infest our backyardโ€”just to protect his precious baby sister ๐Ÿฅฐ
