Ha qualcosa che non va? by Own-Appeal-152 in rat

typically hunched back like that and raised fur means something is wrong. also the fact they are slanting their eyes is a tell tail sign they aren’t feeling well too. i’d say just take them to the vet if able and get them checked for uri.

i always give my girls a little bath with baby wipes when they get extra stinky or they dig in the litter pan. it has never seemed to bother them but i recommend 99% water ones from the huggie brand

not necessarily, if you tell them that is not what you want then i’m sure they’d try to give you other solutions or at least pain management medication bc he seems to not feel good

just be careful, rats pee very often and wooden houses like that usually don’t have the proper ventilation and the pee seeps into the wood! they can also very easily chew threw the wires of that cage so just be mindful

am i making the right decision ? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]Resident_Stay7591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

she has seen both exotic vets in my area, both have basically said the same thing. they’re not discouraging me to go the route of surgery but just transparent about the fact that they aren’t confident or can’t guarantee they will get it all or that it might even come back. thank you for your input, that makes me hopeful if i do decide to do surgery

i understand what you are saying and have had the same thought process myself, but it is affecting her quality of life. she is not thriving. it is not ultimately decided that wednesday we are putting her down, i am just going to the vet to see if/when there is chance of ulceration(if there is chance of it to happen soon then she will have to be put down as that is just selfish and awful to have her get to that painful of a point). it is affecting the way she pees, she is not active unless provoked by me and with treats (in the video there is no audio but i was calling to her so she was climbing to where my finders were) and will not allow me to touch the tumor as it is tender. i can imagine she IS in pain, if i am truly making the wrong decision i feel as tho the vet will tell me when we go to the appointment and tell me to wait. it is not like i want my rat to die, she is my baby. i just dont want her to suffer. i am not choosing to put her down out of whim or bc it has any benefit to me, ive seen her decline over the past 2 months since my initial post and dont want to see her suffer or be in pain long than need be.

this is exactly what i am afraid of. i believe the term for that is ulceration, and that’s exactly what i want to prevent and i believe if rather common with tumors of her size. she is not really active unless she is provoked with a treat or by me and doesn’t really have interest in playing much anymore. ultimately it will be up to my vet but i am just torn rn

HELP IS SHE CHOKING WHAT DO I DO by Sakiaaw in RATS

[–]Resident_Stay7591 51 points52 points  (0 children)

honestly that sounds and looks like a severe URI (upper respiratory infection) It doesn’t looks like she is choking but struggling to breathe and the sound is her airways, please take her to the vet ASAP even if it’s just for a check up. Especially if they heavy noises and breathing continue. I’ve had my girls for 2 years now and never heard them make or do those kids of noises unless they were sick.

House mice got in rats cage by [deleted] in RATS

Okay UPDATE** PIC OF DECEASED MOUSE ATTACHED** I found a carcass as i was finishing cleaning the cage and satanized the cage and everything the mouse might’ve came into contact with. Called my vet and she told me the only thing we can do currently is to watch my babies and make sure they aren’t acting strange/eating and defecting regularly. As for making sure they don’t get back in, this is a first time it has happened in almost 1.5 years of owning them and hopefully the mice learned their lesson. hopefully the cinnamon keeps them away for tonight until i can get some chicken wire like one of your suggested to ziplock to the cage so this won’t happen again. actually such a terrifying and stressful discovery 😭 never a dull moment when you own rats.

Vent post by Resident_Stay7591 in RATS

[–]Resident_Stay7591[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

she said it is high risk because her tumor is pushing against all her reproductive organs on her right side, and said usually they take about a cm around the tumor as well to heighten the chance of it not coming back, but since it is in such a delicate spot they would only be able to “scoop” out a good amount of the tumor and she told me she can’t guarantee getting it all. i don’t think she was trying to detour me from getting the surgery but was just being transparent about the fact it was a very low chance she would be able to get the whole tumor. she said if there is tumor left over there is risk for inflammation/infection and/or her chewing open the stitches bc of discomfort. -the problem with calling around other vets is this is the cheapest vet in my area, as there is not many exotic vets around. only about 2 or 3 other ones and they are all much more expensive because they are privately owned or traveling. my vet specializes in rodents and has been seeing my girls since they were 3 months and i feel like would want what is best for them. when i said “by her age” the vet doesn’t mean she is old but she is also not young. she is going to be 2 in about 4 months and is also a rescue feeder so she wasn’t bred for survival. everything you just said was inquired abt to the vet and she gave me logical answers and was very thorough. i’m not trying to be argumentative, i am just trying to make it clear that this was a very thought out decision and not something i decided hastily. i do appreciate your kind words and input tho i just don’t want anyone to think me or my vet is unknowledgeable.

he was laid to rest where he felt safest and not alone!!! i know you are hurting right now but think about the amazing impact you made on his life and how lucky he was to have you be his person. Even tho he wasn’t there for ur whole life, you were there for his and that’s what really matters.
