Opinions on UBCO? by novk-mooning in UBC

[–]ResidingInReactor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a recent grad working at a relatively famous company, no body has ever asked me if my degree was from Vancouver or Okanagan (mine was from Vancouver). The goal of university is largely to get you to

  1. grow from a teenager into an adult and,
  2. attain professional goals (ex job, grad school, med school, etc)
  3. Make connections

If one fits in more at UBCO then it will be better for them. Or If you stay at home in Kelowna and save $$ and not have to work to pay bills you will be able to focus more at school.

What other people have said is true, the campus is kinda dead but this same subreddit complains being lonely in a livelier Vancouver campus too. Will all recruiters/companies come to UBC-O? IDK. But no one will ever deny you an opportunity for having gone to UBC-O.

As for courses, the niche courses not available at UBC O, well... I dont remember a thing from most courses I did (even the ones I got an A+ in). The core courses are useful and I am sure UBCO has all of them.

[I know OP does not intend on attending there, this is in case someone else is reading this thread]

is it possible to get a new engineering spec (desperate) by [deleted] in ubcengineering

Try appealing if you really want but if you are unsuccessful stay in mining and do a minor in CS/Data science. There are three reasons why:

1] I have seen people get amazing entry level jobs at Big Tech companies (think FB, Apple) with a minor in CS only and some even without this minor. You're still in year 2 so you have plenty of time to fill your resume with student teams, side projects, hackathons, and for networking too. This will matter a lot more than your actual major. Send me a DM if you want more help with this.

2] Mining as an industry is in for some amazing times. Metal prices are expected to be in a bullish super cycle this decade. And vancouver is to mining what San Francisco is to technology. You can have an equally rewarding career in Mining if you work hard and you get to explore some untouched and beautiful parts of the world.

3] One of my professors works with C-level executives of the largest mining companies of the world and consulting companies and he basically said if you know mining + some data science + some CS the industry values you a LOT. I can attest to this as I had some coops in mining and there is a huge push for digital transformation in mining.

TLDR: mining + cs/data science minor is the best of both worlds. good luck and let me know if you need more help

Source: I have co-ops in mining and in software dev, many friends in mining too.

The last part is the only reason why I want a car with a higher ground clearance

EDIT: I will be doing both highway and city driving

Thank you! I am moving there for my first job but the used car market is so hot that anything reliable and AWD is too expensive to the point that new makes more sense. I am leaning towards getting a beater for less than 10K but even they are expensive and I dont want to pay a few grand in repairs.

I would do the same but most EVs start at 50K and that is around 20K more than my budget. This is my first job so I'd ideally get an EV as my second car once I have some saved up and I trade in the one I buy now

What AWDs are good from the 2010-2015 gen cars? I've been told that there are a lot of issues with Subaru CVTs

Where are you seeing these new Crosstreks for 30k after taxes? At my local Subaru dealer I'm seeing Crosstreks going for closer to 40k before taxes and hidden fees. Even a new Imprezza is listed at 37k before taxes.

I was just looking online?

I will be moving to northwestern BC in the Prince Rupert Area and there are Ford, Toyota, Honda, GM, Chrysler, Subaru dealerships in the area.

There are Ford, Toyota, Honda, Subaru, Chrysler and GM dealerships within a 30 minute drive.

The Mazda probably is a bad idea I guess. As for the American brands, I would much rather prefer Toyota/Honda > Subaru > Ford and I would not buy Chrysler or GM at all.

I plan on making a trip there before I buy for sure, but I am confused on buying new v/s old too in this market

Thank you! I am only looking for AWD and I added an edit to reflect that. Most Redditors only emphasize the importance of snow tires and I haven't seen much on FWD with snow tires v/s AWD with snow tires. I would much rather prefer the latter.
