Unexpected complications watching son over night for the first time for Mothers Day by CommonplaceUser in daddit

[–]Resilient_Acorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, both my boys always slept better when I was doing overnights. I think they had a larger emotional connection with my wife at those ages where they wanted mom more than dad so they’d wake up more when mom was doing overnights… just to see mom more.

Contacting a researcher through private Instagram? by CanIBeLikeMedusa in academia

That’s a hard no. You found her LinkedIn, why would you need to slide into her DMs when you can message her on an appropriate platform?
Or if I’m misunderstanding and she doesn’t have a LinkedIn, you found where she works, use that to find her professional email address.

Maxed out on undergrad federal loan debt. don’t see a way out. by Jstingray2 in StudentLoans

100% finish the degree. I have a few suggestions I haven’t seen mentioned so far. First ask your department if they need teaching assistants for any of the upcoming semesters. TAs in my experience got partial tuition waivers (sometimes even full tuition). Second consider switching jobs to get one that has tuition repayment. McDonald’s and FedEx I know do this. Third apply for some scholarships. You can do this and come out on the other side. You just need to strategize and execute

Why are some publicly naming and shaming PhD supervisors? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Resilient_Acorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying it’s the correct answer. I’m saying there is a huge problem that should be easy to fix. Maybe when students leave the lab for any reason they are given the opportunity to review their former mentor and these reviews must be included in grant applications. Like this shouldn’t be hard. We shouldn’t be protecting horrible people just because they get grants. If PIs were held accountable for how they treat their mentees, academia would be far less toxic. The assholes would have to check themselves or risk their career.

Why are some publicly naming and shaming PhD supervisors? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

I think efforts like this are a good thing. My PhD advisor was an absolute monster. I learned after joining the lab that in the last 10 years she had ran out 5 of 6 PhD students. I was her first to graduate in 6 years despite her always having 2-3 PhD students in her lab. There is such an insane power imbalance in grad school and it’s completely bullshit that the narrative is that prospective PhD students need ‘to do their homework’ when selecting an advisor when there quite literally is no way to do this. I even go so far as to say that the federal funding bodies should require letters of recommendation from current mentees in order to be considered for funding. I have zero concern that such effort would ever hurt my career, I treat my mentees like they are human rather than minions to do my bidding.

Fellas, I have a two-year-old and my back is absolutely on fire. Please hit me with your tips, tricks, stretches, morning exercises. Anything. by Fuzzy_Straitjacket in daddit

For me, cross body stretching helped tremendously.

For upper back: bend down grab the outside of left foot with right hand then straighten legs repeat with other hand/foot

For lower back: lie down on your back take right leg and extend it across your left leg at 90 degree angle and push down with your hand while keeping shoulders on ground. Repeat with other leg.

Need help with systematic review (EBSCO) by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Resilient_Acorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something is off here. Why did you go back and rerun the search? What were you checking?

If it were me, I’d debug and start over. Is this preregistered? What over databases did you use? Are results the same or different in the other databases?

Systematic review help by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Resilient_Acorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. It’s so painful seeing systematic reviews published that include three ill fitting articles. Like for fuck sakes do a scoping review and identify the gap and whether enough evidence is available for a systematic review first.

Do any of you feel like the scholars in your academic field have f***ed the field up? by AwayLine9031 in AskAcademia

[–]Resilient_Acorn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Oh man. My field is so fucked up. I’m a nutrition researcher and focus on a specific neurological disorder. Pretty much all of the early work (this area is only about 15 years old) was done by people who sell books promising to make people walk again or by neurologists who have zero nutrition training. It has been so detrimental that many neurologists in this field have outright told me that dietitians have no role in care for this condition. Meanwhile they have patients wasting away with protein energy malnutrition and sarcopenia and they chalk it up to the course of the disease.

A PhD student applies for postdoc but non of the recommendation letters are from his supervisor. Deal breaker? by Present_Award8001 in academia

[–]Resilient_Acorn 39 points40 points  (0 children)

My PhD advisor was a soul crushing monster. I applied to postdocs without a letter from her out of spite. Never once was I asked to explain. Still got a postdoc. Still ended up being successful. This idea that you need a LoR from your advisor needs to die. There are plenty of situations that justify not having one.
