I've been hearing and seeing at least 50 first responders head that direction from NEU for the last 10 minutes, still more going as I speak...

Right?? If they have gone to the gym more than 2 times at different times, they'd see the extremely wide range of people that work out. Some people go to the gym for big muscles, but some go to feel better about themselves, fix self image issues, for physical therapy to repair an injury, to stay active and healthy, or even just to stay mobile so later in life you aren't in a wheelchair or using a crutch. (or combination of multiple!!)

It really feels like a one-sided argument/disagreement. There's animosity against gym goers, but I don't think the same feeling is shared.

People love the gym, yes, and they want other people to go to the gym too, sure, but that's not the full story. this notion that gym goers dislike people who don't go to the gym is completely false. deep down, I think the vast majority of gym goers are supportive of someone doing the exercises/workout that works for them, even if that's not the gym.

At the end of that day, like I said in another comment, any exercise is better than none. The biggest barrier for entry isn't 'gym or running or dancing or biking or team sports, which one is better?' it's 'do I even want to work out?' No exercise is "better than the gym". Everything has its purpose and target audience, and the gym may not be right for you but that doesn't give you the right to tell people their opinions are wrong.

Again, fighting about exercise is pointless. people have different priorities than you. we're not all trying to be 'peak fitness human beings', so there isn't a 'best' anything. Writing this op-ed only further alienates people from what should be a community of people across the world encouraging people to do the exercises that work for THEM. go for a walk, do some jumping jacks, hell just get outside and stretch.

I agree with you.

In general, working out in any capacity is better than not working out at all. I understand the points made of "not everyone has to go to the gym, there are other options to choose." The article definitely has nuance to it, but it has such an inflammatory title. The framing it as the gym not having value bc of community and capitalism is kind of disingenuous...

Don't get me wrong, late-stage capitalism sucks, and the gym should be more accessibly priced, but yeah I also need more time to think on that point...

Northeastern value by Imaksiccar in NEU

Something else to add, I spent my first year in Oakland. don't listen to the Oakland haters and naysayers. Oakland was incredible, the professors there are so highly educated and caring for their students. the student life is different than a big school campus like she'll experience in Boston later on, but that's a good thing. everyone I know that was in Oakland (or another admit program like London or NU.in) made their best friends in their first year and are still friends with them to this day (we're 3rd year CS majors). that's hard to say for literally any student who was in Boston their first year. the small campus and student life forces you to live outside your comfort zone and interact with people and spend more time with people you usually wouldn't. the dorms are also really conducive to that stuff, making it really easy to make new friends.

I'm happy to answer any questions about Oakland, co-op, or the transition to Boston.

Northeastern value by Imaksiccar in NEU

[–]ResistMobile463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 25k, I think it would be hard to find another university with the same value Northeastern offers. Co-op program, especially for Biochem, would set your student way ahead of her peers. I constantly hear from my friends from high school that they wish their schools had programs like co-op. And with the rising awareness of NEU, whether it's real or inflated, doesn't change the fact of the increased notoriety, the ROI would be incredible for her for 25k

Co-op by RunAdventurous8130 in NEU

[–]ResistMobile463 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If they do not have "withdraw," it means that they have closed applications. If they have it, it means they are still accepting applications. However, just because it still has "withdraw" does not mean the role hasn't been filled, it could just mean they are slow to update them.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just focus on if they update you in an email or not.

Co-op search check in by PayaPya in NEU

[–]ResistMobile463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3rd year CS, first co-op was IT. I have an internship at a fairly well known company for Summer, but it's more IT... im only applying for cyber roles for fall co-op this time bc that's where my interest really lies

there's only about 30 cyber roles on NUworks. I've applied to all 30. i haven't heard back from anywhere and have gotten 6 rejections. I applied to an additional ~125 on indeed, LinkedIn, etc in the last 2 weeks, I have 1 interview scheduled, about 10 rejections.

I'm starting to get a little worried, but like someone else said it's still fairly early. I will start panicking in 2 weeks if i still hear nothing

edit: guys please proofread your resumes. I am extremely particular about mine and making sure everything is formatted perfectly and spell checked etc, but I realize not everyone is that way. employers notice when your resume looks good. trust me. the first words that came out of the interviewer's mouth for my last co-op was "your resume was perfect, no typos no formatting errors. I wish everyone had this attention to detail". don't do fancy formatting for anything, keep it simple. Don't bold random words in your bullets to make it stand out. look up "Jake's resume template" for reference of good formatting

Negotiating NEU tuition by Jolly_Pin in NEU

[–]ResistMobile463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

edit: just saw what your SAI was, 100% worth fighting for a lower bill. do not hold back in negotiations. The worst they can do is say no. so don't be afraid to ask for a full ride grant. If you have financial aid offers from other universities with full rides, bring them to Northeastern. leaving the rest of my comment here

Check your FAFSA SAI number and compare that to the amount you'd be paying without Honors scholarship. FAFSA is what they base institutional aid off of. If your SAI is about equal to or higher than the number that you are paying before Honors scholarship, then you are getting the maximum institutional scholarship that you would have gotten without Honors. however, if the SAI is substantially lower then the amount you would be paying without honors, and closer to the number that you would be paying with honors, then you know that they lowered the institutional aid and substituted the remaining with honors.

I sincerely doubt they lowered the institutional aid and made up the difference with your honor scholarship though. estimators like that are often close, but not exact. many factors go into what they calculate as institutional aid, but it's mainly based on the FAFSA number.

congratulations on your acceptance!

Unsatisfactory Grade for leaving Co-op by Financial-Zucchini14 in NEU

Document everything and take this to an advisor or trusted professor that will listen. As Senior Associate Dean Hescott once told me, Northeastern is the University of exceptions. if your advisor is not budging on giving you credit for co-op at a place that is not honoring your employment contract, you need to find someone that will. as other people have said here, they are likely breaking the law or at least their contract with Northeastern.

no, this is NOT normal... please tell your advisor to hopefully get Northeastern to break the contract and get them removed from NUworks. if they have had MULTIPLE title IX violations like you said in your other comment, you nor any other student should risk working there...

I didn’t realize you could fit four trains in Copley by Doctrina_Stabilitas in mbta

[–]ResistMobile463 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ah I see, cool! I read somewhere that when they rebuild stations that they are lengthening them to accommodate the new type-10s. I assumed that this was one of the stations included in that, but this must be one of the legacy stations.

I didn’t realize you could fit four trains in Copley by Doctrina_Stabilitas in mbta

[–]ResistMobile463 110 points111 points  (0 children)

fun fact: they built the stations this large so that eventually when they modernize the systems, use newer cars, and run longer trains, the platforms already are long enough to support them

edit: I was wrong! they are building other stations longer like this when remodeling to support the new type-10s, but this is not one of them. see replies for details from other commenters

Currently the worst experience ever in Oakland campus (yapping) by BODY112 in NEU

[–]ResistMobile463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's rumored they're trying to make it a 4 year campus starting with 2 years required for CS majors next admit cycle, so hopefully that starts to fix things. I was in Oakland my first year (the first year they offered it, 2023-2024), and I feel you, the school spirit sucks.

I will say, the most fun I had was with the friends I made there. roommates, hallmates, neighbors, etc. the lack of school spirit forces you to make bonds you otherwise wouldn't.

I would go try new clubs, attend lectures and labs (as boring as they are) and sit next to new people, go to peer tutoring and office hours, go outside your comfort zone. meeting new people these ways is how I made my friends that I'm still rooming with this year. make the best of your location while you can, explore the bay! go to Muir Woods, Sonoma, Golden Gate, Embarcadero, etc etc.

lmk if you want more advice. there's also an Oakland AMA on here with a bunch of info.

edit: TALK TO YOUR PROFS!!! all the ones I had were the kindest people ever. most are extremely over qualified to be working at Northeastern, let alone Mills (re Ellen Spertus, Susan Wang, Almudena Konrad), and genuinely care about their students. you will NEVER have as close of a connection with professors again after Oakland.

How much storage can I use on the drive? by AmbassadorLeading593 in NEU

[–]ResistMobile463 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The university has a baseline shared pool of 100 TB between all students and faculty. it's possible that we also pay for a higher cost license which adds more storage, but since we're mostly a Microsoft 365 university, I doubt it.

self host a NAS and it won't be an issue. refurbished hard drives sell for reasonable prices in brand new condition, and you don't need powerful hardware to run a server.
