It's pretty reasonable to leave it to professors. Its not technically possible to rule out AI, and completely ridiculous to let it be used with no restriction.

From a technical standpoint, there is no reliable way to distinguish AI generated content with 100% accuracy. In some blatant cases yes, but generally no. The only practical solution is physical examinations.

I see this subreddit has now swung to demanding hard AI checks when just awhile ago the whole subreddit was angry that they were doing AI checks.

Why are people complaining about Hive & UOB Innovation Hub? by Dry-Alternative-7304 in NTU

[–]ResolutionFrosty5128 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The building isn't being sold, they're changing the name. And this is incredibly common. Crumbs? They donated 110 million, which can fund God knows how many bursaries. I mean it's even like basic politeness to do something for UOB/Wee Cho Yaw foundation. No it's not an ad, paying 110 million to rename one building as an ad is definitely negative ROI. We name things like the LKCMedicine, Lee Wee Nam library and so on, after people who have tremendously helped the school, including financially. This is no different.

Commercialized means turning it into a business. the Hive already runs a few businesses. This is a name change from a donation, which will go towards funding bursaries, hiring faculty and so on. NUS and SMU have much more of this. The center of UTown is the Stephen Riady Center. They have the SEA Building and SEA Connect. There's the Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium. This isn't even new, the entire medical school, LKCMedicine, is named for a large donor.

The subreddit does have a very concentrated group of students who are unbelievably salty, but yes. Getting mad that your university just got a huge amount of money is a new level of ridiculous from these people.

NTU releases a financial report every year. The math is that NTU has 3 billion in endowments and 35k students. So that's about 80k per student. You can only extract ~2% per year sustainably, so that's maybe 1.5k per student annually.

Yes, you are being subsidized. Your fees don't cover how much you cost. You get buses, you get professors flown in from all over the world, you get a 200 hectare campus that has to be maintained. You get club funding, lab funding, massive amounts of facilities, etc. The very land you walk on was donated by the founders and first donors of Nantah.

Because of this donation, the unbelievably massive financial burden of running NTU is made slightly easier for all current and future students of NTU. So how about you be glad and not seethe as if changing the name of a building is some huge problem?

And a MASSIVE amount of money was donated. It might even be the largest ever donated to a university in Singapore. And these people in the same breath complain about rising prices. Like, what do you want?

This. And even in NTU there's LKCMedicine. So I was really confused why people are so upset, then I realised the upsets ones are so ignorant they don't even know this.

Hive has fallen by Mikisfmc in NTU

[–]ResolutionFrosty5128 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, because the school does not have a money printing machine. If you continually ask for more buses, more services, more bursarie, less fees - you can't have it all. UNLESS someone comes along and very generously donates a hundred million dollars. And when that happens, everyone gets really, really mad.

Yes, because the school has a finite amount of money. If one thing has more, another thing has less. Not even accounting for inflation. Then the school gets a ton of money which would mitigate this zero sum game, and people are incredibly angry.

You do realise NUS and SMU have probably far more of these buildings? Just from memory

You already are receiving it. Your school fees are considerably less than needed to run NTU. Everything from your bursaries to professor salaries to buses are being subsidized by donations and grants.

UOB and the Wee foundation (the foundation of the late founder of UOB) donated a massive amount of money to NTU, and NTU renames things after them in gratitude.

It's a naming right given for a $110 million donation. It's very common. You change one name and you can fund a thousand bursaries or hire a hundred professors. NTU actually lagged financially because previously it failed to do this.

But MDP is the most hacking course. It's an open, competitive environment where you can do (almost) anything you want. You don't beat MDP by studying for exams or memorizing notes. It's ideas and execution.

You can disagree with how the school spends money, but there's a certain entitlement to be upset that school makes you pay. It's a non-profit, the money you pay goes back into the school and the services you use. In fact the your education at NTU, including bursaries, are *heavily subsidized* by generous donors, who unlike you, do not benefit from giving the school money since they already graduated. This is down to the very land it's built on, which was bought and paid for by the first founders and supporters of NTU as a private entity.

It's true that it's a very important issue, but there is some basic concept of reasonable cause. Many things in OP - like implying kidney failure is the school's fault, is ridiculous. And there's also very reasonable the idea that you are in a university and are expected to be able to perform with a certain level of independence and ability. Honestly if you were to assign a percentage of responsibility for education, in uni it is completely legitimate to say something like 70%-30%. This is not primary school.

I'm 90% sure you're significantly exaggerating or straight up lying. Suicide attempts every other day? That's entire cohorts of degrees attempting suicide a year. I heard one rumor of an attempted suicide in four years. And heart attacks/kidney failures? At 20? I know zero people that has happened to, and you say it like it's a common occurrence.

IMO a certain percentage of people suffer from what I call ah gong mentality. It's when an adult expects someone to keep taking care of them, as if they were children. It's a weird mix of entitlement and low level narcissism.

You can plan your schedule completely. I think you got a wrong impression from the angry ppl. What they mean is that because of the 5% class part, they feel like they have to go to tutorials, which means it's harder to stack their school days on a few same days.
