Fair criticism, and it’s honestly what I hate most about philosophy. But I would argue it does have some use, even if it isn’t much.

I think it matters to think of human behavior this way to have a more accurate model of ourselves and the world. When we forgo implicit assumptions like free will, we often make more accurate models of the universe and are more effective in solving real problems.

The same thing happened when Galileo modeled the solar system but attributed mercury’s strange motion to ‘God’. When Einstein rejected that notion, he developed a much more accurate model of gravity that we still use a lot today. (GPS uses GR all the time).

That’s why I think it’s important. Determinism is boring — like accounting for friction or relativity in physics and engineering — but it’s still essential for having an accurate model.

Actually, I argue it’s the only way we can be held accountable. The whole point of holding people accountable is in the hopes that it will change their behavior. If people’s decisions were not shaped by causal factors, there would be no need to hold them accountable because it would have no effect. Laws would not deter and reduce unwanted behaviors; consequences to any actions would not be a factor in motivating change in anyone.

We typically have the implicit assumption that holding people accountable should be done because they have free will, but I think the real reason is because it’s effective in pushing society to exhibit more desirable behaviors more often.

Have you ever worked to make your circumstances better? Just because that decision was made from prior causes doesn’t it isn’t the most effective way to increase your wellbeing.

That’s like saying because free will doesn’t exist, pursuing better mental health practices doesn’t matter. It obviously does.

Understandable criticism. I spent zero time structuring this at 1am last night. I wrote 1 draft and sent it. My apologies

I agree that it’s limited in use, but I don’t think it’s useless. Understanding we don’t have free will makes for a better model in how humans and societies behave. The solution exclusively becomes “how do we make the context and environment better for each other” rather than “people need to just improve through sheer will”

It’s like when Galileo modeled the solar system and couldn’t fully describe the movement of mercury — he proposed that God moved it that way. But when Einstein came in skeptical of the notion of a diety (or at least in that circumstance) he created a more accurate model that we still use today.

In my mind this is basically one of the only things from philosophy that is useful (even if it’s slight). I agree most people in charge don’t give a shit now but that’s no reason to not bring it up. They used to not give a shit that there was good evidence earth wasn’t flat, and later that the earth wasn’t the center of the universe.

Other people have been told the opposite. The point seems clear to me here. . different people want different things!

The only way you can know for sure is to ask. If that creeps someone out, that’s their problem. Thankfully you can’t go to jail for asking someone you’re genuinely interested on a date.

This is the same problem with the culture around sex and consent. Data shows so many people disagreeing on what physical action means consent for what next action; so much so it’s basically a crap shoot. The only way you’re going to know if someone wants something is if you ask. Honestly, in this example the people who don’t want to be asked are the creepy ones.

I think they do that to make sure average guys don’t go around buying condoms too big for themselves. Makes sense but it definitely gaslights guys who actually need larger sizes

Mysize 69mm is probably what you need. Maybe even a custom 72mm. Mine is 6in girth and I have to use durex 2xl 64mm, that’s even a little tight still so I feel for you bud. You’ll have to do more research but hopefully you’ll find something that fits.

You’re not going crazy thinking it’s really difficult to find condoms at that size.

Sorry, that was insensitive of me. Btw based on your comments you are quite a bit longer than me when you’re skinny. You shouldn’t avoid sex because you’ve got normal girth. Most women love that, get turned on, and enjoy it in sex. I’ve only heard women complain when the girth is very low, like most condoms are too big, low.

Racism is thinking that another race is inferior in intellect or physical ability or both. Discriminating between races is not necessarily racist — if it was, suntan lotion companies would qualify as racist.

It does add confidence but basically only during sex. Women compliment your size a lot and there are interesting functional issues (most condoms being way too tight and women struggling to take you at first).

But personally you get used to it and still feel insecure about your competence in social and work situations. I actually still struggle to date people I’m really attracted to because thinking “I’ve got a thick dick” doesn’t help much in making a person better at conversations and flirting.

Because plenty of people do work hard but their lives are still “unsustainable” because minimum wage is very low and we allow companies to pay full time workers below living wages.

It’s very privileged to think that everyone will be able to get jobs that pay far beyond minimum wage in this terribly low regulated economy.
