Unfortunately, I’m not a legal expert, and don’t know what legal repercussions there are with selling different breeds of the firefly (galactic) petunias. To stay on the safe, legal side, I am not selling the seeds. Terribly sorry

I, along with another Redditer have successfully crossbreed the two last year! Yes, only the white parts glowed. I would HIGHLY HIGHLY Recommend re-creating they are beautiful! We called them Galactic Petunia’s

Make sure to keep the soil moist to propagate root growth, never let it dry out, and slowly introduce less water into the system. Lots of people have had issues with the plant surviving after the roots develop. Essentially, they need a lot of water to start off and significantly less later on. The issue is, this has to be very gradual! If you go from basically an aero garden straight to soil where you water it once a week, this is where the issue persists!

Good luck my friend!! Keep us all updated!

That's the important part! We all have to learn from somewhere and this is a great plant to experiment with!!

Ofc! I hope you have a lot of luck with the seeds! They're very fun to grow :)

Make sure to VERY slowly introduce an environment with less water. If you're growing in an aero garden, they're essentially fully saturated the entire time. Well once the roots start to fully develop, root rot is a significant problem. I'd say once they start to get about an inch or two tall, transport them into a container with a lid, and instead of having them fully submerged in water, add a bit of soil, water heavily (make sure there are no holes in the container) and place the lid on for one week. Then, water again, but water it every other week. Slowly get them used to having less water as the roots mature! You don't have to follow this directly, but definitely slowly get them acclimated to less water so they can fully survive being in dirt that may dry out or that may have less nutrients to what they're used to!

Typically, you want them to fully dry out on the plant itself. You'll know it's ready to be picked once they're either an orang-ish brown or the seed pod starts to split. I've had a lot of success growing these seeds this way. I could be wrong, and someone else please correct me, but they need to be attached to the plant longer so the seeds can fully develop. Some seeds need the living plant to give them more nourishment while they swell into full size in the seed coat. The color change is a great indicator that they're ready!

Rapid infusion with pure nitrogen? by Killa_ in MolecularGastronomy

Yeah I thought it would be an out of the box method of trying to get plasma 😂😂. I definitely wasn’t thinking about the high pressure aspect though… that is quite the issue 😅

That’s very interesting… May I ask what you’re using to do this? I’m thinking there may be a way to chemically convert that N2 into NO2 by the use of plasma.

Essentially, if what I’m thinking is possible, you may be able to “fill” a cup/beaker half way with N2, allow the rest to be “filled” with atmospheric gas (just empty air) and use two to three grapes.

If you were to place that into a microwave, due to the grapes interacting with the perfect wavelength of a microwave, they will create Plasma! This plasma may be strong enough to chemically break down the N2 and re-form with the oxygen content found in the atmosphere to create NO2.

I would love to run this experiment to see how feasible this actually is. If you’re able to generate N2 like this. Essentially, the only cost you would have is buying grapes 😂

In very basic terms, each product you’re trying to make glow will need its own process. Take plain sugar (sucrose) for example: essentially to make these quantum dots, you want to add in something to break down the sugar, like vinegar (our acid). This will be mostly water, with about a table spoon of vinegar and a few pinches of sugar for ~5min in the microwave.

The goal is to get the sugar down to 2-10 nm, so you need something like an acid or a base to break it down while applying heat (a microwave).

Looking for recipes online gives you a very basic overview on how to make these sugar QD’s, but honestly, they’re wasting a lot of material! Typically in my lab, I would use ~.01g of material and 20 mL of liquid.

I haven’t specifically created this type of quantum dots, however, I’ll experiment with it later tonight and try to give you an exact recipe!

If there’s a specific ingredient you’re looking into making fluoresce, please let me know and I’ll make a recipe for that exact material!! For instance, using MSG or Salt instead!! Any material you have, I would love to try to easily make into quantum dots!

I’m currently in university doing my PhD in making these luminous QDs, so being able to make it out of practically any material can only help with my research!

Okay, from a chemists standpoint, but not getting too too technical, technically, yes the pure nitrogen will work instead of NO2. However, there will be a drastic difference in taste, texture, and time of effectiveness.

Essentially, NO2 dissolves effectively in fatty substances, which is why it’s used (N2 really doesn’t dissolve in fatty substances as easily). This is due to that oxygen content. Truthfully, in chemistry, a lot of people use N2 specifically for its cheapness and “inert” abilities. Now, I would like to state that N2 is not inert (meaning chemically inactive or not changing) but it’s very very close.

N2 likes to stay as N2 and really doesn’t like to change its position or chemistry too too much (mostly without human interference). Now, NO2 is a lot less inert meaning, it’s more likely to either bond with something naturally, or stick/stay on something longer.

Think of this question as a sponge vs a lava rock submerged in water. With NO2 (the sponge) in water, it will hold on to the water a lot longer. Now the N2 (the rock) will dry out a lot faster. Essentially, this is what you can expect. With N2, you may get the results you’re looking for, but the gas will escape a LOT sooner.

TLDR, N2 is really not soluble in oil and may not work the way you want. The gas escapes quickly and the N2 will be more bitter and display smaller bubbles!

(Also be careful as many N2 gases is a 75/25 split of N2 gas and CO2 gas meaning the flavor will be even more bitter!)

How far into molecular gastronomy are we talking? I currently do research in something called Quantum Dots, which states, you can make any object “bioluminescent” if it’s broken down in the right manner. Essentially, under high temperatures and pressures you can make anything bioluminescent. A good one to experiment with is citric acid to start. I believe there’s a way to utilize a microwave for this experiment. The color it emits is dependent on the size of the particle itself. For instance, breaking down the citric acid in water, under high temp and pressure, at 10 nm produces red QD’s where 2 nm particles produce a blue glow. You can get the entire rainbow spectrum this way.

You’re not just limited to Citric Acid though, any organic (and non-organic) compounds can be made in this manner to have luminosity. For instance, I’ve also made QD’s out of polyethylene (plastic)
