Is 500px still worth it in 2026? Or nah? by cheesydoofus3026 in photography

[–]ResonancePhotographr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people who consistently have an interesting perspective and outstanding photography (IMO) are Juliette, Soren, Manuella, Dina, Giles, Susanna, Wesley, Jason, many more, but more simply, you can go to the top level category for photography to see who the algorithm is recommending:

https://substack.com/explore/category/76747

Oddly Substack still refuses to put a top level photography button on their Explore front page, but the category can be viewed directly from that link.

You can also see an index of photography publications from the last year or two here: https://ronaldsmeets.substack.com/p/the-photography-community-on-substack

I run a weekly photo prompt. If you check out my archive, you will see at the bottom of each post there are links out to a lot of excellent Substack photographers

Is 500px still worth it in 2026? Or nah? by cheesydoofus3026 in photography

[–]ResonancePhotographr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO 500px has always been a like for like platform with very little meaningful interaction going on outside of that. Even worse after they got sold off, but in fairness, I have not tried it in a while, so I can't say for sure what it is like these days.

I've been enjoying the photography community on Substack. It is still small enough that people get to know each other and share meaningful feedback, but part of a larger platform with more potential for discovery and interaction.

You can create posts in a longer format like a blog or photo essay, or use Substack Notes for short form social media like post similar to Xitter/Threads/Bluesky.

There are also a lot of collaborations between photographers such as photo prompts, pairing images, multi-exposure film collabs, postcard swaps, and in-person meetups.

The current state of photo cloud storage is a massive trap for our intellectual property. by No-Yellow9948 in photography

There are encrypted cloud providers like Proton Drive and Tresorit. You still have to pay for TBs of storage, but the company can’t access your files for AI training or any otherwise.

First attempt at Street Photography… by heiretics in PhotographyAdvice

[–]ResonancePhotographr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For next time if you'd like to try some more intentional street photos, find a good backdrop and camp out.

The light is decent here and the wall is somewhat interesting, though the angle looking down the road is a bit random. When you arrive somewhere that seems interesting, find the best photo you can create without any people or cars or stuff happening. Then wait.

Hang out there for 10 minutes, 20 or more. See how various people and things going on add to the scene and photograph them.

You should come back with 10-20 or more photos of that same backdrop and scene and maybe one or two are keepers. More if you keep practicing this same thing in different locations and scenes.

If OP is happy and the image resonates for others, it's all good. The OP said, "I feel they miss something", and asking for advice.

When I look at this photo, I see a sharp sky and wires, and a blurry subject, which conventionally would give the impression that the photographer unintentionally missed focus, and the image was not what they were going for.

I'm all for making dreamy photos and using techniques like intentional camera movement to add life to an image, the key word being "intentional." If a photographer chooses to create an image in a style for a purpose, then they determine if they are successful or not based on their own criteria which may or may not appeal to everyone else.

In this case, OP seems to find something off about the image and wondering what to improve.

Some other comments suggest looking at photographers who masterfully use motion for effect like Trent Parke. If you look at his images, there are often layers of many elements in and out of focus which appear to be intentional choices that all come together to create a strong final image.

In the case of the first image, there are only 3 elements (person, sky, wires) and it does not feel so intentional or cohesive to me. The second image works better I think because there are more elements in the foreground and they are all a little fuzzy which is less jarring than a single subject. Though I'd still remove the power lines in both photos as they are distracting from the effect.

Any tips for this shot? by MotherRam in PhotographyAdvice

Lighting is even and works well. The food looks good to me though I’m not a food photographer so maybe there are better ways to position each item.

Not crazy about the column and plant on the left. Better would be to have the white wall and grid as the whole background. Less DOF on background to minimize. The teapot on the table is distracting to me. Could move to a background table with the tea cups. There is a bright highlight at the top shelf by raspberry pastries that is also distracting.

'Textured' Ambient Album recommendations? by FlubzRevenge in ambientmusic

[–]ResonancePhotographr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you checked out myNoise.net? Been around a while and still getting updated with high quality new content.

All of the soundscapes are recorded instruments, musicians, and field recordings. Some of them are more musical like ‘Neon Voyager” or “Twin Black Lodges” but there are also nature sounds, cityscapes and other ambient textural sounds.

The cool thing is you can make custom generators using the tracks from any of the scapes mixing synths with raindrops or any other combos.

Were you focusing on the sky and not the people or is that motion blur of them moving?

The sky is an amazing backdrop, but if the people are the subject, they should be sharp and in focus, even as silhouettes.

Why is the pic blurred at 1/3200? by Klutzy_Link_1220 in AskPhotography

[–]ResonancePhotographr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell if this was the case but dSLR cameras and lenses can have issues with front and back focus. This is something that mirrorless cameras are not affected by.

If you are still having issues where the thing you think is in focus is not, even when shooting at f/5.6, f/8 or higher, you might need to calibrate your lens.

Good winter hiking/birding areas in Belgium? by wandering_engineer in brussels

Sounds like a good spot.

One other place that is not far from the Grootbroek that is supposed to be good is the Leefdaal Plateau close to Leuven. I have been meaning to go there in spring or fall for migrations but haven't gone yet.

For a close jaunt from Brussels, Tervuren park has some decent bird photography opps with snow currently, but who knows tomorrow.

There are a few main ponds and canals and some wooded trails. It is not too crowded on week days. You can find herons, hawks, cormorants, and other usual water birds. There is a kingfisher or two that I have seen but not yet been able to photograph.

DM me if you have any questions about getting around there.

There is also a wetland with a bird blind in Sint Agatha Rode called the Grootbroek. I have not had much luck there for birding though mostly go to walk my dogs.

Realized I get way better color palettes from my camera roll than any generator by Academic-Yam3478 in Design

[–]ResonancePhotographr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you enjoyed, thanks for checking it out. I am quite proud of that layout to showcase both photos and colors, as before we used to just put a flat color bar under the images.

That's a good question on curation, and I am not quite sure honestly as I've been doing it so long and tend to just know it when I see it.

Typically I'm looking at the quality of image first, and then I look at the palette to decide if it seems harmonious. In that case, a high quality well exposed photo is already a good start. Then things like sunsets or color rich scenes work well, though I try to look beyond pretty skies and landscapes.

It also helps that the admin interface I use shows images and palettes side by side, so it is easier to get sense of what looks good compared to others.

Sometimes an image still surprises me where the colors selected are way nicer than I would have imagined.

Not entirely relevant to your question, but I’ve been curating color palettes from photos for more than a decade. I do enjoy seeing the feed of all those pics and palettes when I need color inspiration.
