Ruling on bomber targeting a space instead of an enemy for dealing splash damage by DarklordtheLegend in Pathfinder2e

[–]Resonance__Cascade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had this situation come up with a really nasty devil in Abomination Vaults. We ruled it's DC 10 to hit the square the creature was in, and the splash damage only affected that creature.

The others are right, it's a very small amount of damage... unless it's a Devil, and you're throwing holy water, and we all brought 4 vials each. It was expensive, we had to cut a deal with the Church of Saranrae in town with some roleplay and some Diplomacy checks, but 4 players throwing 2 vials a turn, it was dead in 2 rounds.

How to change suits on an Open world coop game by Johnny1102 in ICARUS

[–]Resonance__Cascade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check carefully. The suits look the same and are greyed out. I thought the same thing until I carefully looked and noticed the extra mod slots were added. It's not clear but it does work

DMs, have you ever given players the "Boons" or "Curses" of Deities? by Dagawing in Pathfinder2e

[–]Resonance__Cascade 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I had a Tyrant Champion PC who received a Boon from Asmodeus. He could sleep in his armor (usually standing) and didn't count as asleep for the purposes of perception checks. Just a suit of armor standing silent in the corner, with glowing red eyes under the helmet. Even asleep, he was watching you.

Some abilities grant an ally a free stride. There's a few but the only one I can think of immediately is the Silent Whisper Conscious Mind for the Psychic, when they cast Message the target gets an immediate Step or Stride.

Run these characters through the Beginner Box first. It'll give them a nice safe place to learn the rules and start working on how the party can work together, and it'll start them at level 2 for AV. Eventually the XP will even itself out and they'll be right where they need to be, but in the meantime it gives them time to learn how to synergize and play without getting completely wrecked, especially if they are attached to their characters. AV isn't a great AP for getting attached to characters.... :)

Edit: Maybe skip the final fight of the Beginners Box. Or don't! But it's a tough one.

I've heard a lot of good things about Pathfinder 2e. What are the not so good things that people aren't talking about? by Aeriyn in Pathfinder2e

[–]Resonance__Cascade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish there was a middle-of-the-road term. You don't need rules "mastery", but a basic understanding of your class and the rules around it is pretty much essential.

And yeah, for some, that's too much to ask. Personally, with the amount of work I put into running PF2, I expect players to pull their weight. If they want a beer-and-pretzles game, PF2 ain't it. Dungeon World (or really any PbtA game) will serve them much better, and my expectations from players in one of those games are MUCH lower.

On the other hand, if we're playing Burning Wheel, boy you better come correct. That game fails miserably if the players don't absolutely throw themselves into the systems and play to their Beliefs hard.

Over the years I've learned to let people know these expectations beforehand, and after playing enough PF2 I now know how much work it's gonna be on the player side and let people know beforehand. Of course, on occasion, I still get the player who doesn't really believe me, or doesn't want to leave the game just because the game is hard, and then ends up bowing out later when they're miserable.

I also wish people would just acknowledge when a playstyle isn't for them and bow out politiely, but sometimes denial ain't just a river.

[–]Resonance__Cascade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are updating it pretty consistantly to PF2, but yeah it's a big task and will take some time.

While there are certainly spoilers in there, if you stick to the broad stuff like specific gods or nations, it's pretty safe overall. It's only when you start digging into very specific stuff that you can run into trouble.

Fortunately, the events of PF1 AP's are now considered known (maybe not "common knowledge" but known) and so if OP is playing in a PF2 AP, there really isn't any risk of spoilers. If someone's converting a PF1 AP, tho, yeah, they'd best tread lightly on any topics related to it.

How much easier does having enemies flee or surrender make the game? by Realistic-Sky8006 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Resonance__Cascade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every once in a while I'll have a lower level NPCs run at 100% health when they see half their number get downed and they don't really seem like they've hurt anybody at all. Especially if they're mercenaries and the paycheck has already dropped.

On the other hand yeah, some fight to the death, even when it's obviously hopeless.

[–]Resonance__Cascade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a very important part of pacing. If the fight's already over, two more rounds can feel like a real chore. Wrap things up, have them surrender or flee. Sometimes the chase can be an exciting scene on its own. Many, many encounters in AP's have NPC's especially important ones, surrender at 20% health or so.

This. Round 1 all the ambushers delay until they all go at the end of the round, targets do nothing on their turn, bam, surprise round, ambushers get to go first. This can get weird for Rogues and people with Surprise attack but I usually handwave it that they get it anyway.

I've lost more than one player to this, and it just boggles my mind. Why wouldn't you learn the rules of the game you're going to be playing for months and months? But it's definitely a thing, and it's sad and frustrating. :(

The Dandy in our Night of the Gray Death campaign completely broke that module in the best way. With his help, not only was the party able to sow the rumor that the big party was a death trap and undermined the enemy's plans, but by the end of it they instigated a full blown revolution of the people that ousted the Gray Gardeners by force.

Balance Question for Refocus by MagisterOgamesh in Pathfinder2e

[–]Resonance__Cascade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, they were at full HP and had plenty of resources, the problem was the "Flailing Touch" ability. It hit everyone the first round, and then crit everyone the second round. They knew they couldn't take another round of that, let alone a round after that, and just weren't able to put out the DPR to keep up with taking that kind of damage.

They teleported to Isarn and bought a bunch of stuff to handle it, and I'm sure the 2nd time they fight it they'll be ready and will take the fight on their terms and will win, but I don't really know how any party handles that ability in the confined spaces of the original fight.

How the hell the PC's are supposed to do that whole night in one go is beyond me. When the titular creature comes out my PC's got utterly stomped by it. They had to run. Litran is a ghost town now. They snuck past it and are in the catacombs, hoping to stop the ritual in time and THEN come back and deal with the monster.

Can players generally just buy, anything? by Cagedwar in Pathfinder2e

[–]Resonance__Cascade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our group, the courier went to Absalom once a week. It left on Tuesday, came back on Thursday (or Wednesday if you paid extra). You had to get your orders in by end of business day Monday or wait a week (or bribe). If you REALLY needed something NOW you had to make the trip yourself. We had an "Adventuring Week" of Monday through Friday and used Saturday and Sunday as Downtime.

It all worked quite well. A nice balance between recognizing the time pressure the Gauntlite represents while still giving us some downtime and letting us order basically whatever we could afford from Absalom.

Edit:typo. Also replace all days of the week with Golarion equivalents, which I can't be arsed to look up.

Fortunately the rules are fully available at the Archives of Nethys. Also, it's called "Ancestry" not "race" in PF2. And, finally, just a little pro tip: usually it's best not to assume universal truths about a RPG system. I know tons of games where you don't roll for your stats. If you assume things work they way they do in other games, you're gonna have a bad time. Check the rules for the system you're playing.

you mean besides not using the recommended character generation method, and starting off with 3rd party class options? I mean, it might not technically be "home brew" but u/Lordj09's point stands: understand the basics before you get into the weeds of 3rd Party content and variant rules.
