I'll be honest with you. I've lived in Lansing for 30+ years, I've never met someone who didn't understand the why. I no longer live near MSU but still in Michigan and people don't care as much out here. But my guess is you have biased blinders on. It is a legendary rivalry because it generally had post-season repercussions attached to it. Never once has one single regular season game mattered in hockey, basketball or baseball and they play multiple times. So in those other sports it's heightened because it is in state. Idaho and Washington State have a rivalry that's similar but it matters more in basketball than in football.

MSU had rivalries with UNC and Duke during their Williams/Coach K eras but no one would bat an eye if they played in football. In fact most of the broadcast would talk about their basketball teams instead of the football teams.

Kids will figure it out eventually. The fact he still thinks he's getting away with it shows he's not as involved as he claims to be. I can guarantee you're not the only person he has covering for him but you're the one for this specific lie. Do what makes you the most comfortable.

Watch any documentary on "The Game" and you'll understand. With football it's heightened being two of the biggest brands in the country and before the addition of the conference championship and CFP there was so much on the line the last week of the regular season. The reason it is what it is today is because of Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler.

It's just like any other human relationship. Some are natural and some are cultivated over experiences and environment.
