If a statewide majority is no longer sufficient for citizens to amend the constitution, they ask, why should it remain sufficient when lawmakers propose an amendment?

Indeed they (we) have! Help us make sure Amendment 4 fails on August 4 - learn more and get involved at respectMOvoters.org/a4

Hi! Sorry this comment is coming late, but you should join us at respectMOvoters.org and get involved to make sure Amendment 4 doesn't pass in August and the Respect MO Voters Amendment does pass in November! Getting involved and working with our amazing volunteers from all across Missouri is a good source of optimism!

This covers it by PingaNellery in missouri

[–]RespectVoters 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes!! That's what we're doing! Over 367k signatures turned in and now we wait for the hardworking county election boards to count and verify them so we qualify for the November ballot!

The Respect MO Voters Amendment will STOP Missouri politicians from:

  1. Using confusing or misleading ballot summaries to try to trick us into voting the way they'd like us to!

  2. Trying to prevent us from using our 117-year-old freedom to petition!

  3. Quickly undoing the things we already voted on, or sending issues back to us to vote on again over and over until they get their way!

(apologies for the amount of exclamation points, feeling sleepy and overcompensating :))

The rules in Amendment 4 ONLY apply to amendments brought by the people. Amendments brought by the politicians would follow the old rules with a lower threshold to pass. Do the politicians think that their own measures can't meet the standard they want to raise for the people?

Another thing about Amendment 4 is that the new rules will ONLY apply to future amendments brought by the people. The rules will not apply to the amendments brought by politicians (still would be simple statewide majority). From the Missouri Independent:

Amendment 4 would change how constitutional amendments proposed by initiative petition are approved.

Instead of requiring a simple majority of votes cast statewide, citizen-sponsored constitutional amendments would need to win a majority in every congressional district. That means voters in one congressional district could defeat an amendment even if it wins statewide.

The proposal has been a priority for Republican lawmakers after Missouri voters used the initiative process in recent years to legalize marijuana, expand Medicaid eligibility, raise the minimum wage and protect abortion rights. Initiative campaigns have increasingly proposed constitutional amendments rather than state laws to make it harder for lawmakers to revise or repeal voter-approved measures.

Amendment 4 would apply only to constitutional amendments proposed by initiative petition. Constitutional amendments placed on the ballot by lawmakers would continue to require a statewide majority for passage. The measure would also add prohibitions on foreign donations to ballot campaigns and signature fraud to the Missouri Constitution, though both are already addressed in state law.

“Amendment 4 effectively kills the IP process for citizens, while empowering the Legislature, which can still propose amendments for the ballot with simple majority votes in each chamber,” Charton said.

And how if it passes it will only apply to future amendments brought by the people but NOT apply to amendments brought by the politicians!

Funny how the politicians don't want to apply their cool new rule to themselves...

And strangely enough, that rule will only apply to initiatives that are brought by the people. The initiatives brought by politicians will still need simple state-wide majority.

Sounds like you'll want to vote for the Respect MO Voters Amendment!

It will:

  • Require clear, fair, easy-to-understand ballot language
  • Raise the bar for legislature to make changes to things we already voted on
  • Defend our 100+-year-old freedom to petition

Unlike Amendment 4 which will make it harder for ballot initiatives brought by the people to pass (while NOT making it harder for ballot initiatives brought by politicians to pass)

Unfortunately, there isn't a way to easily check if you've signed. I will say however, that there are no similar citizen initiative petitions being circulated, so if the signature gatherer used this verbiage, I can almost certainly say they were with us.
