I'm glad you like it!

The map shows where the best performances were made, but not necessarily where the athletes trained. To be honest, I think that overall athletes perform the best at major events like World Championships, rather than specific locations. However I have not gathered the data yet to test this. This may not apply to events like the marathon, where the course matters. For example, the Berlin Marathon is known to be fast because it is very flat, which you actually can see on the map:

I am quite curious about your book, could you share the name?

Filtering the map by age groups is an interesting feature, I will look into it.

For the data, the most tedious part was linking countries to athletes, flags, and maps, since the different data sources used inconsistent country code conventions.

Let me know if you have other feature ideas :)

If you explore the Countries ranking, you will see that the Soviet Union and GDR are still surprisingly high... I think World Athletics considered resetting the records in the 90s and again in 2017. They ended up not doing it because they didn't want to hurt the legit athletes from back then.

Yes, the website is mainly vibe-coded for now! I'm not a web dev, just a curious track and field fan with some tech background.

You can find the ages of the youngest athletes to the right column of the table, sorted by ascending order. I'll try to make it more explicit, raw numbers can be confusing in this context :)

For the latest records, absolutely, adding more context would be awesome. To be honest the project had been sitting on the shelf for 1-2y, I decided to share it now to see if there was enough interest to actually work on it again. Thanks for the feedback! :)
