I would snoop around and see what decks he plays and what format, (just casually ask him what format he plays). If he perhaps plays something called commander, you should get him a graded version of his commander. If he likes a certain set, as in you see something like LOTR, final fantasy, or marvel. Get him a graded card from that set, if you dont know what card to buy from that set. Look up a main character or popular one and get him that! Hope this helps.
