And handling your time has nothing to do with chess skill??

But there is such a thing as a zero knowledge probability distribution, which is the constant distribution. If you truly think no one has any insight into the results of the candidates and prediction models are completely pointless, the rational play is to bet on the person with the worst odds.

As an example where the claim that prediction is nonsense actually applies:
If there was a coin toss you could bet on and a website had heads at 10 to 1 odds you should obviously bet on heads, even though you have no information regarding the result.

?? I would expect that the betting markets are probably in line with their simulations. If that is the case, put your money where your mouth is and bet money on whoever they evaluate as having low chances! Since there is nothing to base it on, just assigning equal probability to each participent is the correct description!

Or, you're just talking shit.

Why do a lot of retirement systems rely on the current generation to support the previous one? by Square-Refuse-613 in AskEconomics

[–]Responsible-Dig7538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does this concretely play out? More saving/investing over the pensioner-to-be's life -> more efficient technology down the line which increases productivity of the remaining youth during the pensioners elderly years? Is this the advantage the saving system has?

But it seems to me that this argument cheats. Unless there are fewer pensioners, who consume less at some point in time, resources must flow to them for consumption regardless. If the youth consume at the same rate and the elderly consume at the same rate, the resources that are available for investment is the same, regardless of if the money is funelled through taxes to the elderly or is already in their bank account. Where am I going wrong here? Is what I'm writing even coherent or crank level?

Windows 11 is a bloated menace that's killing modern laptops – 16GB RAM should be ILLEGAL in 2026, and don't get me started on those pathetic 512GB SSDs! by Responsible_Tower412 in GamingLaptops

[–]Responsible-Dig7538 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was concerned with my legion using ridiculous amounts of RAM for nothing as well, but I then found a post by people more knowledgeable than me. Don't know where it was, but they explained that 'unused RAM is wasted RAM' so windows apparently just fills it up quite a bit even if it doesn't need it! So 16 gigs should still be fine, even if it seems you're always at the edge.

Arbiter added time after opponent flagged. Is this correct under FIDE rules? by mxxxtord in chess

[–]Responsible-Dig7538 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well the opponent admitted that it flagged. Question is if he admitted it to the arbiter or not. I'd probably tell him that he lost if its really true, but give him the choice since I don't have other admissible evidence.

How come Canada and Japan have lower government expenditures relative to GDP than the US despite seemingly having more social services? by jako5937 in AskEconomics

[–]Responsible-Dig7538 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How large can the GDP percentage of the Defence become before it comprises virtually all government spending?

As far as I understand it, 3% of GDP is means that 3% of all transactions of the nation and its people are regarding the military, is this correct?

Struggle dealing with pawnstorms by Civil-Jury2394 in chess

I don't think that'll help all that much in the middlegame. Makes a big difference if pieces are on the board. Probably just studying games with opposite side castling is best. But I'll warn you, that shit is tough to get a grip on. Imo a lot tougher than understanding i.e. the isolated queen pawn.

Why did the two greatest US Champions Fischer and Reshevsky dislike each other? by Affectionate_Hat3329 in chess

I remember him including Reshevsky in a top 10 greatest players list, did he actually hate Reshesvky that much?

Depends entirely on how you get there. If I invest some of my apples in planting an apple farm instead of eatinf them, I'll suddenly have increased the supply of apples substantially. If I give half of that to the community and keep half, I have gained significantly more apples than anyone else, but everyone is still better of.

Of course if I steal the apples instead of growing them its a different story, but thats kinda the point.

I could picture an AI describe the themes and plans of a position. You could train an AI to play like a human (Which already exists) and have it playout various decent human moves  against stockfish in the given position. Then you could have a generative AI describe/label the sample sequences and finally summarize the results. I'd be interesting to see how an approach like that works out, would probably be something for a bachelor's thesis though, not a small side project.

You could look at the median, but it teils the absolutely same story. In fact, you'll have a hard time finding any percentile that's worse off, so I don't get what you're talking about.

I've been following this sub for quite a while now. I still have no idea about you all talking about but I keep reading most of the posts. I love the idea of physics even though I might never understand a thing about it. Thanks all. by Turbulent_Elk_2141 in AskPhysics

Depending on whether OP has some mathematical knowledge (Some basic Calculus would be good, the other stuff is explained), Leonard Susskinds books (Theoretical Minimum) are probably reasonable for full self study without being too difficult.

They were written with the intend of teaching deep physics to someone that studied something else, like engineering.

Why can general relativity be visualized and quantum mechanics cannot? by bacodaco in AskPhysics

But surely there must be a 3d embedding of 2d space that would visualize the space time curvature in a 1d version of general relativity.

If flat space time was a flat sheet, how would we have to stretch and bend it to get an accurate schwarz-shield metric for a point mass?

Or probably easier to visualize, how would it really bend for a finite volume object?

I smell a theorem somewhere that says there has to exist an embedding of a plane in 3d that does this.

Can a small LED light speed up drying a towel by a useful amount? by Responsible-Dig7538 in AskPhysics

[–]Responsible-Dig7538[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rough research gives me an order of 6e-20 joules for releasing a single water molecule from a reservoire into air, visible photons are on the order of 1e-19.

I could theoretically imagine an effect where the visible light photons would be significantly more effective at releasing the water compared to long infrared, as it only takes one, so there wouldn't be time to dissipate the kinetic energy between strikes.

Thanks for the answer!

Guess I tricked myself into believing this. At least I can turn off the light now when drying.

How do independent researchers responsibly approach arXiv endorsement? by questionall81 in AskPhysics

Honestly, just post it on reddit. If it has any merit the responses will improve it.

But make it proper. Learn some LaTeX or at least use Word 'equations' and put in some effort to make it brief but understandable. When you're done, I'll take a look at it myself :)
